    2008 Game Recaps

    Week 12: Memphis 51 - SMU 21

DALLAS - The Memphis Tigers managed to keep their slim bowl hopes alive last night with a 51-21 win at SMU. The win moves the Tigers to 5-5 with two games to be played.

Junior QB Arkelon Hall led the Tigers by connecting on 25-of-38 passes, three of which went for toucdowns. When it was all said and done Hall would have a game-high 364 yards passing.

Junior running back TJ Pitts scored three toucdowns and hit the century mark with 109 yards on 24 rushes. Wide receivers Duke Calhoun and Maurice Jones both caught six passes going for 93 and 65 yards respectively.

The Tiger defense was paced by Tony Bell, six tackles, Greg Terell, two sacks, while Jermaine Robinson and C. Govan both came away with interceptions.

SMU posted the first score of the night before the Tigers took control by scoring four straight toucdowns including a 30-yard strike from Hall to Calhoun.

    Week 13: Memphis 44 - UCF 25

MEMPHIS - Memphis assured themselves of finishing the season with at least a .500 record yesterday as the Tigers (6-5) defeated UCF 44-25. The win can be credited largely to the Tiger defense that managed to force four turnovers.

Junior QB Arkelon Hall threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns, the last breaking Memphis' school record for touchdown passes in a season. Junior WR Carlos Singleton recorded seven receptions for a game-high 170 yards and one touchdown while fellow junior TJ Pitts ran for 134 yards and one score on 37 carries.

Freshman LB Ricky Holloway had 12 tackles, Lorecio Medals and Tony Bell both had interceptions while Doante' Lamer and Greg Terrell each recovered a fumble with Terrell running his back 51 yards for a touchdown.

WR Duke Calhoun also had a touchdown before leaving the game with an injury and Memphis' kicker connected on all three of his field goal attempts. The Tigers will look to end the season on a high note in two weeks vs. Tulane.

    Week 14: Memphis 29 - Tulane 26

MEMPHIS - It was a junior who stole the show on a day dedicated to the senior Memphis Tigers who ran out of their home tunnel for the final time. Junior running back TJ Pitts ran for 167 yards and two touchdowns in Memphis' 29-26 win over Tulane. The win moved the Tigers' record to 7-5, meaning that Memphis is now bowl eligible.

Junior QB Arkelon Hall threw for three touchdowns and 261 yards in an 18-for-31 effort with wide receiver Duke Calhoun caught six receptions for 64 yards and a touchdown.

Freshman Ricky Holloway had another stellar game with two sacks. Holloway was joined by fellow linebacker Josh Weaver with two sacks of his own. Senior Brandon Patterson had one interception and Doante' Lamer led the swarming Memphis defense with seven tackles.

For the game, Memphis had 444 total yards to Tulane's 298.

Memphis struck first on the day thanks to a one-yard Pitts touchdown run, but a missed extra point would prove costly as Tulane quickly marched down the field and took a 7-6 lead off of a slant route that ended up going 50 yards for the score.

The Tigers managed to fight back by adding a field goal and then letting 6'8 receiver Carlos Singleton use his power forward like frame to grab a pass that was thrown high and take it 42 yards for the score and a 15-7 lead.

However, the lead was not to last as Tulane's passing attack gave the Tigers fits all day and contributed to 12 straight points giving Tulane a 19-15 lead midway through the third quarter.

Memphis finally took the lead for good when Pitts scored his second TD of the day off of a 23-yard screen pass from Hall. Calhoun's touchdown later in the third quarter iced the game for Memphis, winners of its last three games, as Tulane was only able to add one more score in the fourth quarter to make it 29-26 before the Tigers were able to run the clock out.

    Memphis is off next week.

    Memphis 42 - FAU -0

NEW ORLEANS - The Memphis Tigers had Bourbon Street rocking Saturday night as they laid claim to their fourth bowl victory in school history after a 42-0 thrashing of Florida Atlantic in the New Orleans Bowl. The win caps off an 8-5 season that saw the Tigers finish the year on a four-game winning streak.

Memphis dominated nearly every facet of the game in the Big Easy. The Tigers outgained FAU 439-96 while gaining 20 first downs to 7 all the while holding the ball nearly twice as long as their opponent (18:27-9:33). On defense, Memphis held FAU to just 3-of-10 on 3rd Down Conversions while also forcing three interceptions.

Junior running back TJ Pitts ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns, junior QB Arkelon Hall finished the game with 247 yards passing and three touchdowns with one interception blemishing an other wise great day. Wide receivers Duke Calhoun and Maurice Jones both had four catches for 120 and 66 yards respectively with two of Calhounā€™s catches going for scores.

Junior linebacker Josh Weaver led the Tiger defense with one sack while a trio of defenders came away with interceptions (Doante' Lamer, Ricky Holloway and Brandon Patterson).

The game started with a three and out possession by Memphis that led to FAU driving the ball 50 yards before Holloway righted the ship with an interception inside the five yard line. Calhoun capped off the following drive by taking a 19-yard screen pass for a touchdown.

From there the rout was on as backup running back Marcus Steele, Calhoun, senior tight end Brett Russell and Pitts (X2) would all add touchdowns to help secure a victory that will give the young Tiger team hope heading into next season.
