The young Miami Hurricanes opened their 2014 campaign in Waco, Texas against the Baylor Bears. Miami unveiled their new-look team with 16 new starters and performed well, but have a lot of room for improvement. Miami gained 502 yards of total offense, but gave up 275 passing yards. The defense did, however, hold the Bears to 0 rushing yards and intercepted a pass.

Baylor took the opening kickoff, drove almost the length of the field in less than 2:30, and took a 7-0 lead on a 30-yard touchdown pass to Matt Blair from D.J. Roberts. Miami took 2:33 to tie the score at 7-7. Nick Young hit Jake Tate for the 1st of his 4 touchdowns in the back left corner of the end zone. Just under 2:00 later, Miami took their 1st lead of the game and would never trail again. The Hurricanes moved the ball all the way down to the Baylor 1 yard line, from there, Young took a shotgun snap and followed his linemen into the end zone on the QB Power play. 2:08 later, after Miami forced Baylor to punt, freshman star in the making, Josh Know, took a fly sweep 80 yards for a touchdown, taking the Canes from a 7-point deficit to a 14-point lead in just under 4:00. With a little over a minute left in the half, Baylor would respond when their Player of the Game, Roberts, found tight end Derrick Inman for a 16-yard touchdown strike. Young and his Canes had a response though, with just :08 left in the half, Young found Paul Johnson for a 29-yard touchdown to end the half with Miami up 28-14.

Miami received the 2nd half kickoff and put the game away. Miami scored on their 1st two possessions to go up 42-14 and the result was no longer in doubt, just the margin of victory. Young threw for both of Miami's 3rd quarter touchdowns, the first to tight end K Kirby and the second one went to Tate again, when he outran the coverage on a drag route. Roberts did his best to keep Baylor in the game, throwing his third touchdown of the game to running back Garrett Hall, but it just wouldn't be enough. James Rodgers broke a 38-yard touchdown run for Miami to start the 4th quarter and Hall added a consolation 1-yard touchdown run to make the final score 49-27. Miami improves to 1-0 and will travel to Knoxville, Tennessee next week to face the #18 Volunteers.
