Players gon' play, haters gon' hate
Michigan State 35 - Arizona 21
Michigan State keeps Arizona at arms length in a 35-21 victory.
Junior running back Edwin Baker touched the ball 29 times. Maybe Coach Dantonio should have let him touch it more. Baker rushed for 214 yards on those 29 carries while managing to get across the endzone 3 times, including a 65 yard scamper in the 2nd quarter.
Michigan State recorded the first three scores, holding a 21-0 lead late in the 2nd quarter. Arizona then showed signs of life when a late 2nd quarter touchdown, due to a lapse in coverage, cut the lead to 2 touchdowns. The Spartans were unable to do anything in the 3rd quarter, while the Wildcats got another touchdown from their quarterback, Nick Foles.
Trailing by a touchdown, Arizona got what they thought was the game-tying touchdown in the 4th quarter on a fumble recovery. However, the play was challenged and reversed in favor of Michigan State. The Spartans then proceeded to march down the field and put the game away with two touchdowns late in the 4th quarter. It also helped that Foles got picked off in the endzone late in the game.
Michigan State Senior QB Kirk Cousins seemed a little unsure of himself during the course of the game. He recorded two touchdowns. He also threw one interception on a ball that sailed high of his intended receiver.
It was a bit of a shaky start for the Spartans, but they hope to build on this performance.
P.S. I had to restart my game due to technical difficulties with my custom playbook. I talked to Killer about it already.
Michigan State 54 - Florida Atlantic 21
Michigan State avoids potential upset.
Things were not looking good for the Spartans early on. After two quick drives with no points for Michigan State, star QB Kirk Cousins went down with an apparent shoulder injury after a sack. Already down 7-0, this brought in backup QB Andrew Maxwell. On his first play from scrimmage, he was hit and fumbled, which was returned for a touchdown. Needless to say, he was absolutely atrocious after that. His throws would be 15+ yards ahead of his intended receiver. Finally after managing to get a field goal, Michigan State brought in 3rd string QB Connor Cook in to finish the 1st half. He was the spark that the Spartans needed, throwing 2 quick touchdowns to WR BJ Cunningham to take the lead at halftime, 17-14.
The 2nd half was much in favor of the Spartans. RB Edwin Baker finally found some holes in the defense, rushing for 3 touchdowns and 162 yards total. Cook contributed another passing TD and freshman 4th string RB Nick Hill rushed for 2 late touchdowns on 2 carries for 112 yards. Look for Hill to get some more action in the upcoming weeks. It has been announced that Cook will start next week vs Utah, not Andrew "I can't complete a pass" Maxwell.
Michigan State 24 - Utah 17
Michigan State stayed perfect on the young season, defeating the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City. This was a game of two very evenly matched teams and could have gone either way. After a missed field goal by Utah, Michigan got a field goal of their own. After a Utah 3 and out, the Spartans' Edwin Baker broke off a huge run for a touchdown. Utah was down but not out. At halftime, MSU held a 13-7 advantage.
The second half saw some major turns in the game. MSU failed to score on their first possession in the 2nd half. However, the Utes would throw an ill-timed interception in their own territory. MSU, hoping to capitalize, threw an interception of their own on the Utes 10 yard line. This was returned for a touchdown and gave the Utes a 14-13 lead. The play was originally a run, but was audibles to a pass for unknown reasons. MSU would fight back and manage a field goal on their next drive, re-capturing the lead.
Early in the 4th, the Utes added a field goal to take a lead again. However, with 2 and a half minutes left, Michigan State scored and got the 2 point conversion to take a 7 point lead. In desperation, the Utes threw another pick to end the game.
Michigan State 55 - Central Michigan 7
Michigan State had their strongest and most convincing game of the season on Saturday against Central Michigan. They got off to a quick start, as Edwin Baker ran 68 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. He then added a huge 94 yard touchdown run later in the quarter. He rushed for 198 yards total on 11 carries. QB Kirk Cousins also looked very sharp, completing 16 passes for 275 yards and 3 touchdowns. Freshman running back Nick Hill also added 95 rushing yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Michigan State had a shutout going until CMU managed a late 1st half touchdown. That would be their only score of the game, however. The Spartans defense had been a little suspect in previous weeks and shutting down CMU is no challenge, but this has to be a good sign.
In the 2nd half, MSU brought in the second team. With Kirk Cousins being a senior, Coach Dantonio is in need of a replacement for next year. Today, Andrew Maxwell got the nod and did not disappoint. He was atrocious 2 weeks ago when Cousins went down, but today he showed signs of a promisng quarterback.
Defense couldn't stop shit, lost my RB for 4 weeks, lost my QB for the season, we lose
There's a bug with injuries, so all of those players will be back next week.
If you want to beat me just run the ball.
KillerNuts found that out very quickly.
Michigan State defeats #2 Wisconsin in the snow, 17-7.
As you might expect, it was a very defensive game with very little offense.
MSU scored on a 1 yard TD run after an interception. Later, the biggest play of the day happened after a short pass over the middle went for a TD for MSU. Wisconsin would score in the 3rd quarter but both defenses remained strong throughout the game.
Michigan State's sloppy play enough to earn win
The Spartans opened up with a stellar drive, but could not punch the ball in and ended up coming away with a field goal. After a Nebraska interception, Cousins then threw an interception of his own. Still 3-0, MSU's Edwin Baker fumbled the ball in Nebraska territory. However, Nebraska's Martinez would fumble a few plays later and MSU returned it for a touchdown. Nebraska earned a late field goal in the 1st half to make it 10-3 at halftime. The Cornhuskers then drove the length of the field for a touchdown to open up the 2nd half. But this was followed when MSU's passing game finally got rolling and Kirk Cousins threw a short TD pass of his own. MSU would eventually put it away when they burst a run up the middle for another score.
Michigan State 49 Minnesota 10
MSU's Kirk Cousins had it going today as he threw for 5 touchdowns. MSU finally got the passing game rolling and got multiple receivers involved in the game. The Spartan's defense was lights out as they only allowed 10 points. MSU RB Edwin Baker also racked up more than 100 rushing yards once again. It was a very clean game for Michigan State. The only turnover they committed came when their backup quarterback threw an interception late in the game.
