The Michigan Wolverines have signed their first recruit of their 2010 class. It is local standout JUCO MLB Timmy Swanson from River Rouge, MI. The Wolverines were engaged in a heated recruiting battle with the "other" Michigan school, MSU, but Swanson proved that he has good intelligence and decision making skills and ultimately chose the Wolverines over their little brother. Let's hope that these smarts carry over onto the football field.

    September 10th, 2009 - Ann Arbor, MI --
Today the University of Michigan signed their 2nd player of the 2010 recruiting class. It was four star punter Shane Johnson from Muskegon. With Senior All American Zoltan Mesko graduating this year, the Wolverines needed a replacement. Johnson is rated as the 9th best punter in the country. When asked about why he pursued him coach Briggs had this to say; "There may have been some guys ranked higher than Shane, but this kid is a real find. He has the strongest leg in the entire country and there's only 1 other punter with a more accurate leg. I'm not sure what the scouts are looking for in a punter to have rated 8 guys higher than this kid, but the only thing I care about is his leg. His leg is the best leg of any punter in the country, hands down."

Johnson will have some big shoes to fill, but we're sure he'll do just fine.

Congrats Jello. I saw the same thing with this punter. He was my #1 target at the position. I had that damn bar filled all the way up, you just kept ahead of me. Looks like you're going to do the same thing to me with the Bonus SS (Williams) too. Apparently he doesn't care too much that he'd start at ND next year.

I'm in good position with another SS, but he's not a bonus guy so it will probably mean dropping one of my 4* targets.

Today the Wolverines got a hard commitment from a great recruit. It's :4stars: bonus recruit Jerome Williams. A bonus recruit means that he doesn't count towards the new recruiting limits imposed by the NCAA. He is rated as the #50 recruit in the county and the #4 SS. He is a great all around prospect. He has good speed, good tackling ability, and plays great zone defense. He is also a hard hitter and will certainly be looking to knock off a few helmets when he gets on the field.

The Wolverines will graduate starting SS Stevie Brown after this year and it was expected that Junior Troy Woolfolk would start next year. Depending on how quickly Williams can pick things up, he will certainly be able to challenge Woolfolk for the starting spot next year.

Today, the day following the Wolverines' shocking defeat of #3 Penn State, Michigan signed over 600 lbs of grade A, :5stars: beef. The first player is guard Mike Allen out of St. Cloud Minnesota. He is rated as the #1 guard in the country and the #12 overall recruit. He is a monster, standing 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 317 lbs. And this is as a freshman. He is very strong and a very good blocker. He will make a very welcome addition to an improving Wolverine offensive line.

The second recruit is Wendell Campbell from Hacienda Heights, California. This bonus recruit is the #1 DT in the country and rated #30 overall. He too is a man child as he weighs 294 lbs. He will join current Wolverines Mike Martin and William Campbell and will make the Wolverines extremely talented at the DT position. He is very strong, and is also very, very bright. He has the best awareness of any DT in this recruiting class .

Congrats on Campbell, I really wanted him. I have a feeling the 5-2 might be employed a bit more often now in Ann Arbor.

Today the Wolverines got another commitment. This was from :4stars: cornerback Robert Sanders from California. According to coach Briggs, Sanders was the top corner on the big board for the Wolverines. There are rumored to be 3 other corners on the board, including 2 that are ranked higher than Sanders. When asked what he liked about Sanders over these other corners, coach Briggs had this to say; "He has decent speed for a corner, as well as good size at 6'1. He's great in zone coverage as well as bump and run. On top of all of that, he comes from a very talented area in California and I want to continue to keep a pipeline to California. All of these high school recruits from California play on teams with other very talented, younger kids. When they tell these younger guys how great it is to play for Michigan, it just makes my recruiting job that much easier."

Also, hot off the presses, Michigan has signed :3stars: QB, Ian Heffner. Heffner is the fastest high school quarterback in the country and should fit nicely into coach Briggs' system. He is a bit of a project and he will certainly be behind current true freshmen Tate Forcier and Denard Robinson, but the kid has great potential, despite his :3stars: rating. He has average throwing power but is pretty inaccurate at the moment. He is, however, a real burner when it comes to running the ball and he is great at breaking tackles and is extremely elusive. During his junior and senior years he has proven that he can run the ball as he set the West Virginia high school record for rushing yards by a quarterback. Now we just have to see if coach Briggs can teach him to throw the ball as well.

It's early, but Jello is earning my vote for recruiter of the year. He's landed several bonus guys, and I dig his strategy on some of the other guys. Dominating California.

Just missing on Campbell and Williams hurt, but I really wanted that punter. Now I've got a 5-way dilemma.

ND irks me. There's 2 WRs that I wouldn't mind having (even though I have 7 fr-so WRs on my team now) and they've both given him soft commitments. On top of all of that, Dat hasn't even given them an offer (I think because he only has 1 schollie left). It doesn't matter how much time I spend on them (last week I spent two hours on one of them and one hour on the other) and I still can't jump above ND.

Also, that's just yet another really nice thing about AVID. AVID allows me to track what states all of my players are from too. This is great for managing pipeline states. If I see that I have 5 guys from Texas on my roster and 3 of them graduate this year, you'd better believe I'll recruit at least 2 of them this year!

Didn't realize that about AVID. That is a really nice feature. I'm clueless on my pipeline numbers, and I think it's a really important thing to know.

I seriously doubt I'll end up offering one of those WRs. I'm keeping the option open, but they're low priority given that I only have 1 4% spot left. If I had signed 1 more bonus guy I might have taken one of them.

If you keep pursuing them and end up signing one, I'd be curious to hear how much effort it takes. I know I've spent a lot of time (probably the majority of my time) trying to jump over soft commits this year. Hasn't happened yet, although the leader was actively recruiting those guys in every case.

I hear you there. I've lost out on a few guys where I had a full bar and trailed. For those 2 WRs every week I tell myself that I need to cut bait and go after someone else, and every week I continue to go after them (I just spent 2 1/2 hours on the two of them combined this week :) ).

The Wolverines signed another recruit today. It's :4stars: center Reggie Ramsey from out of Maryland. Michigan has been pursuing this kid all ear. He was leaning towards Maryland, Navy, and Rutgers as he wanted to stay near his hometown, but in the end, he just couldn't argue against playing for the maize and blue. He will likely redshirt his freshman year as he will be behind stud sophomore David Molk. It's likely that he'll be the heir apparent when Molk leaves however.

During the last in season recruiting week, Michigan signed 2 more recruits. :3stars: DT Melvin McGee from Maryland. Melvin will give the Wolverines some depth at the DT position and will certainly redshirt his first year. They also signed :4stars: G Joe Hardy from Ohio. Joe won't start his first year, but he will certainly compete for a backup position.
