    Mississippi St Bulldogs - 2011

    Mississippi St 27 Missouri 19

This was a huge road game for the Bulldogs under newly named head coach Mr2Bits. Midway through the first quarter Miss St receiver and all-purpose threat Laron Byrd took a direct snap from the "Bulldog Heavy" formation to give the visitors an early 7-0 lead. Mississippi State's D was stout behind junior LE Fletcher Cox who played behind the line of scrimmage all day, recording 2 sacks and forcing an INT.

Missou mounted a furious comeback by scoring on back to back possessions going into the 4th quarter. The Tigers had all the momentum in a very close game when Laron Byrd went all LARON BYRD and returned the ensuing kickoff 91 yards to set up a FG. Miss St would add another FG to ice this game in Columbia.

Hugely disappointing game for the Bulldogs who coming into the season were looking to move up in the SEC West pecking order. Mississippi St. controlled things early on offense and defense, taking a 14-7 lead. Things fell apart in the 2nd quarter when Tyler Russell threw a 90 yard pick 6 at the end of the half. Things snowballed from there as all-purpose threat Laron Byrd went down for 2 weeks. The Bulldogs could do nothing on offense in the second half.

The Bulldogs fall to a conference opponent for the 2nd week in a row in disappointing fashion. The first half of this game was a defensive struggle, but Miss St was on top at the half (14-6) due to a pick 6 and a kickoff return from Chad, straight out of Mississippi, BUMPHIS.

The story of this game, and of Miss St's season, is the inability to put the ball in the endzone on offense. The one bright spot in this game was DE Fletcher Cox who recorded 5 sacks on the day. Fletcher, who had a big game against Mizzou but disappeared against Auburn, played behind the line of scrimmage all day. With a tough SEC West schedule ahead of them, the faithful in Starkville are just hoping to get to 10 wins.

Down 15-14 at the onset of the 4th quarter, Mississippi St would get a 20 yard TD pass from Tyler Russell to Chad, Mississippi, Bumphis for the go-ahead score. The Bulldogs continue to put together a complete game and barely squeaked by an inferior opponent. Although hopes were high at the beginning of the season, and after having played LSU and Georgia close, Mississippi St is merely hoping for a bowl game at this point.

The Bulldogs get to 4-4 on the season with a workman-like victory over Big Ten foe Minnesota. Laron Byrd had 2 TDs in and Montell Conner carried the ball well. Tyler Russell continues to struggle in giving consistency to the offense. Coach 2Bits will have to pull off a miracle to get a win against the mighty Crimson Tide next week.

The Bulldogs looked to stay in the hunt for bowl eligibility this week as they headed into Razorback Stadium to take on Arkansas and a talented gun-slinger in Ryan Mallet. This turned into a defense battle as the teams headed into the locker room in a scoreless tie. All season the Bulldogs have either played up or down to their competition. This game was no exception. With Laron Byrd out with cracked ribs, Chad Bumphis needed to step up. However, he struggled mightily dropping pass after pass. Fortunately Miss St. was able to put up one more TD than the Hogs. Montrell Conner ran strong in the redzone, scoring on 2 runs in the 2nd half.

Huge win for the Bulldogs as they become bowl eligible at the expense of the hated Rebels. The Bulldogs would take a commanding 17-0 lead into the half behind the arm and legs of sophomore QB Tyler Russell (4 tot TDs) and the defensive presence of Fletcher Cox (3 sacks on the day)

Ole Miss would score TDs on successive possessions to start the 4th quarter, but it was too little too late.
