NC State Wolfpack Observer

Week 1 started off with a user vs. user matchup as we faced a tough Wisconsin team. After a dismal season last year without a bowl appearance coach TRude told the national media we would be back in a bowl game this year come hell or high water. After one week this apparently will hold true.

The first quarter of this game belonged to NC St. After a 7 yard TD pass from Proctor to Underwood they led by a TD. At this point the forced a Wisconsin turnover that they converted into 3 more points and it was 10-0 at the end of 1. The Badgers turn was next as they marched right back down the field to make the score 10-7 on a 5 yard TD. The big key in this game was the answer back scores engineered by the Wolfpack. The teams wound up trading score back and forth until the 5:52 mark of the 4th quarter when the Badgers scored on a 10 yard TD pass to Duckworth making the score 24-17. NC St. again answered with a 3 yard run by James Washington aka "THE PROGRAM". This time instead of trading scores the defense had it's second pick of the day and it paid big dividends as THE PROGRAM took the next play 46 yards for the game winning TD. Wisconsin tried to mount a late comeback, but it proved to be a little too much to ask as the Wolpack start the season off 1-0 with a 38-31 victory.

GG Tuco and sorry guys for not being able to post this earlier!

    Week 2

    #18 Pitt @ NC St.

Following a week 1 game in which the Pack put up 38 points the new found offense looked to keep up the pace against a game Pitt team. Afte the opening drive of the game for the Panthers it was evident that the offense was going to be needed in a big way! Too bad the offense decided to take the first half off. With 0:46 in the first half the Pitt Panthers had just opened their lead up to 28-3. All the wind appeared to be out of the Wolfpack's sails. Wait just a second though!!! Senior starting CB/KR Chris Carter took back the kickoff and turned everything in this game around immediately!!! 28-10 halftime.

The second half started with the Wolfpack offense getting the ball. After moving the ball across midfield the string of bad luck appeared to stay with NC St. Senior QB Eric Proctor went out for the game with a head injury. In comes sophmore walkon Brett Wayne. This would be Wayne's first college action so we decided to bring him along as slow as possible being down 18 points. With that being said let's take a look at what happened the first play after Proctor went down...

*Scott Young our #1 WR is not out for the season. Our starting MLB is still out another 3 weeks. We dont have depth and these things f--kin suck and we're just gonna do our best to compete anyways.

The score was now 28-17 with plenty of time left in the game and all momentum in the favor of the Pack. The score stayed the same until the fourth quarter. That is of course until Brett "I've got ice in my veins" Mayne connected with Scott Young on a 38 yard Td pass. 2pt. failed and we were still down 5 points 28-23. One of the only times this defense decided to make a stop was at this point in the game. It gave us just enough room to take the lead in the game as well as convert on a second 2pt. conversion attempt and the score was now NC St. 31 Pitt 28. I somehow knew our defense couln't stop these guys and they didn't. They gave up the ass and once again with just over 2 minutes left in the game we were trailing. This team refused to give up and converted over and over again with clutch plays. With :09 seconds left in the game James Washington punched the ball in the endzone from 5 yards out and gave us a 2-0 start as we finished the come from behind upset 38-35.

James Washington aka THE PROGRAM finished with another strong outing. 17 carries for 135 yards and 2 td's

Week 3 of this young season had NC St. traveling to play against Duke. Good thing this wasn't basketball. With Scott Young going down for the season last week you had to figure even more focus would be put on the running game. James Washington actually struggled in this one though. 31 carries and just breaking the 100 yard mark meant we had to have offense elsewhere. Elsewhere came in the form QBEverette Proctor and WRBrandon Hill. Proctor threw for 400 yards and 4 TD's with no interceptions. Hill hauled in 8 passes for 235 yards and 3 TD's. This game never was close as the Wolfpack scored 21 in the first quarter and cruised to a 41-14 victory.

*NC St. has now moved to 3-0 on the year and matched last season's wins. Next week comes rival North Carolina followed by defending National Champions Miami Hurricanes. The proving grounds are upon us.

After last year's performance nobody would have thought coach TRude would have a job this season. Luckily the AD gave him another chance because this team is officially en fuego!!! With numerous top recruits in to visit for this rivalry game the Wolpack showed why this team is one to look out for in the near future.

After the opening TD drive of the game by the Tarheels, NC St. would answer back. In fact, just over a minute later the score was tied up on a PA pass to the TE Gold.

Even though we appeared to have some momentum it was still NC that had the 13-7 lead with 2 minutes left in the half. At this point THE PROGRAM was the focal point of the offense. A toss here, a dive there, and next thing you know we punch the ball in from a yard out with :13 left in the half and take the lead 14-13. We would never relinquish the lead as in the second half a FG in the 3rd coupled with a TD in the fourth had us up 24-13. NC did attempt a comeback although it was not enough as NC St. holds on 24-21 to move to 4-0 on the season. This team has already won more games then all of last season and has it's biggest game in many years coming up next week as they host the defending National Champion Miami Hurricanes!

NC St. had what we considered a break in the schedule although coach TRude wasn't preaching that to his team. This game was about the tough defense the Wolfpack has been expected to play this season. Even though the offense has put up more points this year, the fact remains that this team was supposed to be playing a high level of defense from week 1. Starting MLB Michael Daniels was back after getting hurt in a week1 matchup against Wisconsin and we were finally back at full power.

After a drive or two stumbled the offense started clicking. It was a couple of big plays from Everett Proctor to Brandon Hill that put us ahead and out of reach. Actually we would like to focus on these two guys connections as our Wolfpack highlights of the week.

The final score in this game was 28-10 as NC St. continues a great season in the making and now sits at 5-1 on the year. Kudos are going to go out to Everett Proctor who has played out of his mind this whole year. His lone interception came against Miami and wasn't a crucially timed one, nor did it result in any Hurricane points.

*stats show him with 2 int's, but that was b/c of simulation after original game.

Well after a recent string of losses NC St. decided they would turn things right back around in dramatic fashion. Coach TRude traveled back to Florida for the first time(on the road) to take on his former team the Florida St. Seminoles. FSU started off with a 7-0 lead on a 35 yard TD pass to rb L.Pryor. A big factor in this game was a missed extra point by the FSU kicker. NC St. drove back down the field and settled for a FG to make it 7-3

2nd quarter scoring started with yet another NC St. FG to cut the lead to 7-6. By the way the FSU kicker also missed a FG before we hit this FG. FSU again behind the all american qb i recruited Steve Moore drove down the field to have their FG kicker miss his 2nd FG of the game!!! Seizing the momentum NC St. focused on star running back James Washington...

After a couple of punts the time was ticking down in the half. Everett Proctor who had a huge bounce back game after throwing a season high 4 picks last week connected on a 66 yard TD pass to Brandon Hill after side stepping 3 to 4 FSU pass rushers. Here is a look at that play

This game was tied up 13-13 at the half.

The second half had plenty of dramatics as well. For one the Wolfpack would take their first lead of the game on an early 3rd quarter TD on a qb scramble while Proctor was tending to a sore hamstring. 20-13 NC St. Unfortunately the lead would be short lived as FSU scored back to back TD's to close out the 3rd quarter scoring and FSU now led 27-20 heading to the 4th. Another key factor in this one was that the FSU kicker again missed the extra point. All in all he missed two FG's and 2 extra points. Their second TD of the quarter they converted on a 2pt. conversion.

4th quarter ticked away until the 2:47 mark when James Washington scored from 9 yards out to tie this one back up at 27. Robo QB was in full effect like usual and FSU scored on a 24 yard TD to Willie Haulstead and FSU lead 34-27 with 1:20 left in regulation. Everett Proctor marched this team down the field in the short amount of time left though. In fact, with just :01 second left on the clock he connected on a 4 yard TD pass to make the score 34-33. NC St. decided to put it all on the line and go for 2 points!!!! A quick toss play to James Washington sealed the deal as NC St. goes on to win a thriller 35-34!!!

In the regular season finale for NC St. we hosted Penn St. This game was played in freezing temperatures and had a winter effect to it. Little did we know that NC St. would have a X-Mas gift coming there way! After the 1st quarter of play neither team was on the board. Penn St. wound upputting the first 14 points on the board in the 2nd as they jumped ahead 14-0. Let's take a look at one of those TD's...

One thing this NC St. team has shown the ability to do this year that they surely didn't last year is bounce back. Proctor and Washington kept the chains moving and finally got on the board making the score 14-7.

    2nd half---------------------------------

Penn St. againt took a two score lead on a 62 yard TD pass on a busted coverage by NC St. Proctor lead the Wolfpack right down the field and connected with Gold on a 19yd TD pass to close within 1 score again. The third quarter ended on a Penn St. FG and the score was 24-14 PSU.

The 4th quarter was a quarter to remember for multiple reasons. James Washington scored 2 times on runs of 23 and 5. The 5 yarder was the eventual game winner with just over a minute left.

Now let's give credit where credit is due. Penn St. marched back down the field and even converted on a fourth down in the process, but with about :04 seconds left in the game they got the ball inside the 10 yardline with 1 TO left and by the mercy of the NCAA Football10 gods they were unable to get the TO called from the sidelines for what would have been nothing more then a chip shot FG to win the game. The adverse weather conditions apparently blocked the visibility from the ref to the coach and NC St. escapes with a 28-27 victory!!!
