Effective immediately, 2 rules will be added to the contract rules:

I guess my only concern would be if a player wants more years and wont sign because the offer is only for 3?? Not sure it will matter just throwing it out there

3 years is incredibly unrealistic. agree with everything else, but i dont know how that would fix anything

less contract years = smaller contracts, more FA traffic, more salary cap management

Other leagues use this 3 year rule, and have said nothing but good things.

This is not a negotiation, the rule is 3 years.

I like it, personally. It keeps things moving in terms of where the talent on a given team is. Makes free agency more exciting, for sure. Although I'd assume you might see more contract year trades because it.

EDIT: I guess the large signing bonus negates that.

I'm concerned that my bigger FAs won't sign for just 3 years...is anyone else worried about this? I was looking at guys I wanted to re-sign and Gerald Mccoy wants a 5 year deal. I'm afraid if I offer him 3 he won't stay and I'm not a fan of losing a franchise DT at 26 years old.

Franchise tag will be much more important now to retain some of these guys.

Unfortunately I missed that stage in the offseason, and Geno Atkins tested the open market... we threw bucket loads of money at him to stay, but damn glad I've kept my cap number low so I could even do that.

I can tell that re-signing Joe Haden is going to be tough. I imagine he wants Revis money. Looking forward to franchising him I guess.

Yeah guys we are all going to have these problems not just 1 or 2 teams. I have to resign patrick peterson this season.

But I guess my point is why are we trying to have guys like that hit the open market? In real life, Peterson, Mccoy, Haden, etc would all be locked in by their teams. I can understand a second tier guy like Adrian Clayborn slipping through, but teams never let their top guys go like that.

Maybe we can amend the rule that 3 year contracts are the max for free agents and you can resign players on your team under the old rules?

If teams want them to be resigned they have the choice to resign them, but this will keep guys from getting offered unrealistically high contracts. I am not trying to prevent guys from resigning, I am preventing teams from offering extended contracts when teams won't have to pay them out. I can't force teams to resign players just because it is realistic. Rodgers will probably be a FA after this season, nothing I can do about that. This will at least keep him from getting signed for $200M.

IMO this would kill the FA market.. then it would be nothing but old players or bad players that nobody wants to resign. Atleast this way we will have a healthy number of players of all skill levels.

These are all young stellar players that will be visiting Free Agency IRL in the off season. It's not like all organizations can keep their top players on lock... Losing talent opens up other opportunities for new talent which is what makes these leagues so exciting.
