49ers defense hold ground as Marshall and Gore move the Niners to Mega Bowl.

    Candlestick Park, San Francisco, CA

    Giants 17 49ers 24

Sellout crowd was in attendance filled with die hard 49er fans and some old 49ers players from their great Superbowl era. Montana one of the 49er greats in attendance said "Something special is about to happen today. All this energy in the building something special is definitely going to happen". Jerry Rice also mentioned "If the 49ers are to win it will be by running the ball and good defense". That is what the 49ers gave the Giants a taste of both.

    First Half.

Giants start with the ball and would strike fast with a 3 play drive leading to a 58 yard TD pass to H. Nicks quickly silencing the sellout crowd in attendance. 49ers would mount their drive as well as Shaun Hill connected with A. Battle for his own 42 yard TD pass to tie the game 7-7. Giants on their second possession looked poised to score again as they would balanced out their attack as they moved the ball down the field. That drive would eventually stall as B. Jacobs would fumble off a T.Spikes hit that J.Smith would recover for the 49ers. Later on in the 2nd quarter the 49ers would score again as Hill connected with V.Davis in the back corner of the endzone from 5 yards out to put the 49ers up 14-7. Giants would try to add another score before the half but that drive ended in the redzone as time expired.

    Second Half.

This is where the 49ers defense has been stellar and they continued that dominance controlling the game defensively and allowing the 49ers offense to catch a rhythm. 49ers would move the ball well on their first possession of the 3rd quarter converting key 3rd downs to first downs as the ended the long drive with Hill connecting with B.Marshall from 9 yards out to put the 49ers up comfortably 21-7. Giants would drive but again stall deep in 49ers territory and would have to settle for a FG 21-10. Niners would chew up a majority of the clock in the 4th adding a late FG to put them up 24-10 and Manning would scramble for another late score for the Giants as time expired in the game.

Manning did his part for the offense going 21-27 for 251 yards and 1 TD with good showings from Nicks and Winslow. B.Jacobs was taken out of the gameplan late as the deficit grew for the Giants but the big factor was that the Giants could not convert on 3rd downs as they went 3 for 9 compared to the 49ers 9- for 10. Although they were able to grab two interceptions from the 49ers, Hill overshadowed it by throwing 3TD passes in the game. Brandon Marshall and Frank Gore proved to be too much for the Gmen as they did there part in successfully keeping drives alive. If the Gmen were able to convert the two Hill interceptions to points and perhaps add another score at the end of the 2nd quarter the 49ers would not be going to the Super Bowl.
