Penn State Gets First Victory, Crush the Orange at Home

FB Mike Rust Celebrating the Blowout

This game would be no contest from the beginning. The Nittany Lions were hungry to avenge their tough loss to Florida, and the Orange were simply overmatched. Penn State would kick off to start the game and the defense let their presence be known immediately. The held Syracuse to a 3-and-out and knocked out the starting QB for two quarters. Following a Syracuse punt the Nittany Lions offense would show it's ability as they wasted no time getting the ball into the endzone. They put the ball in the hands of their best runningback and he did the work.

    Dukes Makes the Score 7-0

Following the score Syracuse's offense again failed to make any progress and gave the ball back to the Nittany Lions who again made quick work of the porous Syracuse defense. This time Penn State struck through the air as Williams found Wade on a 59-yard score.

The rest of the game would be much of the same for both teams. Penn State would add another 10 points onto their total before the Orange even knew what hit them. The Syracuse offense would show some life before half as they hit a field goal to cut the lead to 24-3. The second half would basically be Penn State trying to run the clock out and Syracuse trying to avoid further embarrassment. Penn State wouldn't attempt a pass the whole second half and tried to burn as much clock as possible. FB Mike Rust would go over the 100 yard mark for the first time in his career, but got injured on the carry that put him over the mark. Rust is questionable for next week's game. The main story however would be about the play of Curtis Dukes. Dukes would go for well over 100 yards and added three scores. Dukes has been frustrated since the new offense has been put in but he was content today.

The backups would get some valuable playing time in this game as they played almost a quarter and a half. Coach Ceps thinks that this playing time will help down the road and into next season. The Nittany Lions have improved their record to 1-1 on the season and hope to rise in the rankings.

    Penn State vs Boise State

Nittany Lions Offense too Much for Broncos

The Penn State Nittany Lions traveled to Idaho to take on the Boise State Broncos. Boise would get the ball first and make the Nittany Lions defense look like a bunch of amateurs. They easily drove down the field to take the 7-0 lead. On the first drive for Penn State, the Nittany Lions offense would make the triple option look good. Backup fullback Meadows would plow over several Broncos as Penn State marched down the field to tie the game at 7 a piece. Boise took the ball on the next possession and once again made moving the ball look easy. Boise found themselves back in the lead 14-7. The back and forth offensive battle would continue when Penn State got the ball back. Meadows would have a 53 yard run to set up the tying score.

Boise would again drive down the field to within field goal range. A few big hits and plays by the Nittany Lion defense held Boise to a field goal attempt. Luckily for the Nittany Lions Boise would miss and the score would stay at 14-14.

Boise Player Gets Flipped and Drops the First Down Pass

Penn State would add two more scores before halftime to take what would seem to be a comfortable 28-14 lead. However with just under a minute left in the half Boise would drive down through the swiss cheese defense of Penn State and score to cut the lead to seven points. The second half however would be a different story as the Nittany Lions would dominate throughout the final 30 minutes. The defense would only give up seven more points while the offense tacked on 21 more points. To make the final score 49-28

Boise QB Swarmed by a Host of Nittany Lions

The key to the Nittany Lion's success in the second half, along with superb defensive play was the play of Junior quarterback Williams. He ran for a couple of touchdowns along with throwing for one. Williams lead the Penn State offense to a season high of well over 500 yards of total offense. The Nittany Lions look to get off on the right foot next week against Wisconsin in their first Big 10 game of the year.

    Penn State vs Wisconsin

Turnovers, Lucky Bounces Pave the Way for Penn State

Penn State traveled to Madison, Wisconsin to take on the 2-1 Badgers in both teams' conference opener. Both the Badgers and the Nittany Lions wanted to get out to a fast start in Big 10 play, but it could only be possible for one of them. Wisconsin won the toss and elected to kick off to Penn State. The Nittany Lions got into a third-and-five but came up one yard short and was forced to punt on their first drive of the game. This would actually work out better for the Nittany Lions than if they had gotten a first down, because on the punt the first big play of the game would happen. Washington fielded the punt for the Badgers, but in trying to make a big play instead of making the fair catch he put the ball on the turf. Willis picked up the fumble and tok it in from 21 yards out for the 7-0 lead.

Willis Picks Up the Fumble for the 7-0 Lead

After the touchdown by Penn State, Wisconsin took the field for its first drive of the game. Wisconsin would get nothing going and would be forced to punt to Penn State. The Nittany Lions would drive down the field and get inside the 20 yard line before QB Williams made a crucial mistake. On second down Williams faked the toss and dropped back to pass. After scanning the field he fired to what he thought was an open receiver but wasn't. The Badger linebacker made a great break and picked off the pass. Wisconsin however was unable to get points out of the turnover, and was forced to punt back to Penn State. The Nittany Lions got a big fumble from Wisconsin and were able to add on a field goal to make it 10-0 at the end of the first quarter. On the first drive of the second quarter Wisconsin was able to march down the field and kick a field goal to get on the board and cut into the Penn State lead. The next drive would be pivotal for the Nittany Lions as they looked to regain control of the game. After getting past midfield Penn State would be forced into a third and long thanks to good defense by the Badgers. Williams took the snap and scanned the field. He felt heavy pressure from his right side and moved to the left to avoid it. Williams escaped the sack and ran up field looking for the first down. Not only did Williams get the first down, but he was able to run it all the way in for a touchdown and a 17-3 lead.

    Williams Scrambles in for Six

The Badgers couldn't get any points following the Nittany Lions touchdown and were forced to punt. The Nittany Lions got the ball knowing a touchdown would really give them some great momentum and put the Badgers in a big hole. The Penn State was able to get that touchdown thanks to the passing game this time. WIlliams faked to the FB and saw an open Wade heading towards the front pylon of the endzone. Williams let it fly and it landed safely in the arms of Wade who ran the last 15 yards for a score and a 24-3 Penn State lead.

Willams to Wade from 46 Yards Out

Wisconsin knew they were in trouble at this point and had to have some points before half to stay within reach of Penn State. Wisconsin was able to do just that as they found some holes in the Nittany Lion secondary. The passing game got them all the way down onto striking distance with under a minute left in the half. The ball was just outside the 10 yard line when Budmayr found his WR Ward to cut into the Penn State lead 24-14 with 40 seconds left.

Badgers TD on the Nice Throw and Catch by Budmayr and Ward

A good kick return left the Penn State coaching staff with a decision of whether to go for points or just be satisfied with a 24-14 lead. Penn State came to the conclusion that with the Badgers having all the momentum and getting the ball to start the second half the would need to try and get some points. A few good passes from Williams set up the Nittany Lions in field goal range with 5 seconds left in the half. Jones made the kick, his second on the game, to help the Nittany Lions regain some momentum as well as extend the lead to 27-10. The first drive of the second half would get the Badgers no points. The two teams would exchange a couple of punts before either offense would get it going. The Badger would strike first kicking a field goal to make it a two score game. Following the field goal the Nittany Lions would be again forced to punt, but this time the defense stepped up big. On the last play of the third quarter Penn State would pick off Budmayr deep in Wisconsin territory.

Pick Seals the Victoy for Penn State

After the pick the Nittany Lions failed to punch the ball into the endzone but they didn't need to. They knew that if they just came away with a field goal the game would be out of reach. Jones was right down the middle on his 26 yard field goal. That was the third field goal of the game for Jones making him 6-7 on the season. The rest of the game Penn State would use it's ball control and rushing attack to run out the clock on a hard fought victory over the Badgers. The win got Penn State its first victory in Big 10 play and its third victory overall on the season. Next week Penn State will look to extend its win streak to 4 when the travel to Minnesota to take on the Golden Gophers.

    Penn State vs Minnesota

Penn State Offense Goes Off in Victory Over Gophers

Minnesota was off to one of the best starts in school history... until the Nittany Lions came to town. The Golden Gophers were 4-1 (1-0) heading into the game against Penn State. Minnesota started out great scoring easily on their first drive, but it was all downhill from there. It was soon very apparent that Penn State wasn't ready to let go of the Governor's Victory Bell that the two teams were playing for. Following the Gopher touchdown the Nittany Lion offense took the field, and it would soon become a scene that Gophers fans will want to forget. The Penn State offense would go unstopped the entire game. No turnovers, 100% on third down, and no stops by the end of a half. On the first Peen State drive it would be Meadows, still filling in for the injured Mike Rust, who took it in from the four. Minnesota got the ball back and looked to go back on top, but the Penn State defense had other plans. After a couple of punishing hits, including a four week injury to the Gopher's quarterback, Minnesota was forced to punt back to Penn State.

Nittany Lions Swarm to the to the Helpless Gopher QB

Penn State got the ball, and of course marched down the field for six. This time it would Hawkins taking it into the endzone from 9 yard line. Dukes was the main man on the drive rushing for over thirty yards on that drive alone. His long run of 27 yards set up the score for Hawkins.

Dukes Weaves his way Through Traffic

After another stop by the Nittany Lions defense it appeared things were going to get out of hand with another Penn State score. The Gophers held Penn State to a third and long. It looked like they would have a chance to get off the field, but the Senior Dukes had other plans. Dukes took a pitch from Williams then made the first guy miss. Duke meet the second defender right at the sticks, but Dukes would win that battle. He juked to the right and the Gopher defender would crumple, and lay on the turf for several minutes clutching his ankle. Dukes would finally get brought down from behind, but well past the marker and the damage had been done.

Dukes Breaks a Long Run and Breaks a Gopher's Ankles

After the Gopher defender got up and limped off the field with his head down in sham the game would continue. Penn State would once again find the endzone, and it would be Meadows again who got them there. This time he hit the hole and burst in form 7 yards out. The rest of the half would just be more punishment for the Gophers as they got knocked around. Penn State would add a field goal with no time left to make the halftime score 24-7.

    Ouch that Hurts

The team came out for the second half and it would be insult added to injury for the Gophers as Jackson returned the opening kick 92 yards to the house.

Jackson Makes it Look Easy for the TD

The rest of the game would essentially be pointless as Penn State backups saw a lot of action and the offense would turn heavily to the ground game. The final would end up being 48-15, a season high for Penn State.

Penn State Comeback Stuns Third Ranked Irish

They say a picture is worth 1000 words. Well here is the videos to show how I got down to need a comeback.

50 Yard TD Pass; I think you get the idea now

Down 20-7 (thanks to a missed ND extra point-FORESHADOWING) when the Nittany Lions didn't think it could get any worse it did. This time the Notre Dame offense didn't even have to take the field.

I'm now at a loss for words

The following drive the Nittany Lions were looking to stop the bleeding before the end of the first quarter. Instead of stopping the bleeding the situation got even worse. A pitch that goes off the head of Dukes is scooped and scored by the Irish. The most dismal first quarter in Penn State history came to an end. The fans were already filling out of the stadium as the game seemed all but over. Little did they know that they would miss the greatest comeback in Nittany Lion history. The Nittany Lions knew that if they were going to come back they would have to hurry and score every time they had the ball. Penn State would be forced to completely change their gameplan. The Nittany Lions would trail 41-14 with a minute left in the half. Williams would lead his team down the field to score with no time left in the half. So the halftime score would be 41-21 Irish. Penn State would receive the ball to start the second half and score and score quickly with a mixture passes and big runs. A score by Notre Dame then an exchange of scores by both teams would make the score 55-35 heading into the final quarter. Penn State had the ball to end the third quarter and would score quickly to get to within 13 points. The Irish would surprisingly get conservative and try to run out the clock. Three straight runs by the Irish led to the first Notre Dame punt of the game. Penn State took full advantage of Notre Dame's conservative nature and scored to make it just a one score game. Penn State would need another stop because they knew a Notre Dame score would essentially end the game. ND got a few bug first downs to get into field goal range, but the Nittany Lions D stepped up to hold Notre Dame to a field goal giving them slight hope. Penn State tried to answer with a TD, but was stopped at the 27 yard line. It would be fourth-and-five from the 27 down 9 points with just over 2 minutes left. The Nittany Lions either had to attempt a career long field goal or go for the first down. Knowing they still needed two scores they decided to attempt the field goal. The kicked just squeaked over the bar but it did make it in to cut the lead to 6 with 2 minutes left. Penn State elected to kick it deep with all timeouts left. The Irish tried to run the ball but after allowing one first down Penn State forced ND to punt. Penn State got the punt at their own twenty-five yard line with 45 seconds left and no timeouts. The Nittany Lions would still need a miracle if they hoped to win the game. On the first play of the drive Williams threw a strike to a streaking Wade who beat man coverage. Wade ran into the open field and took a dive at the 1 yard line to eat up the time. (Video got screwed up. I will try to get it to work again later) Penn State let the clock run down to 12 seconds before the next snap. Williams handed off to Rust to tie the game at 58. THe extra point was good and the comeback was nearly complete. The Irish were left with one final heave but it was no good. Penn State and the few fans left stormed the field in joy as they had just completed the greatest comeback in team history.

Penn State Win Streak Extends to 6

Penn State was Out to Prove a Point Early

The Nittany Lions would look to play crisp following their bye week, but they actually seemed sluggish at times. In the first half Penn State played solid. They didn't make many mistakes and were able to pile up yards through the air and on the ground. They took a commanding 24-7 lead into the break. The halftime break seemed to turn the Nittany Lions into a different team. They let Iowa slowly climb back into the game and at one point the lead was cut to 8, 31-23. Penn State would play just well enough down the stretch to hold off the surging Hawkeyes 38-23. The Penn State offense put up strong numbers again going for over 400 yards. They through for nearly 200 and rushed for over 200. Anderson had a tremendous game as he caught a career best seven balls and also had a career best in yards and touchdowns as he went over the century mark and ad two TD grabs. The defense was led by Senior MLB Warren who had 13 tackles (4 TFL) and a sack. Next week Penn State will face it's toughest test on the remaining schedule when the Nittany Lions head to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes of Ohio State. Both teams are undefeated in conference and are highly ranked so there will be a lot at stake.

Penn State Bounces Back with Win over Wildcats

The Nittany Lions were coming off their disappointing road loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes. They were looking to improve their home winning streak against a lesser Northwestern Wildcat team. With starting QB Williams out for 3 more weeks backup QB Beach would command the #8 Nittany Lions. The game would start out nicely for Penn State as they held the Wildcats to a three-and-out then marched down the field for a 7-0 lead. The Nittany Lions would continue to pour on the points as they built up their lead to 28-7 heading into the half. Penn State started the second half with another score and then it was time to call in the backups. The Penn State second string did not perform as well as they had in previous appearances. After a quick Northwestern score Penn State's second team offense would the field. The offense would be stopped for the first time all day and the Wildcats would get their chance to cut into the lead again. The third quarter ended with the Wildcats moving into scoring position. The start of the fourth would see the Wildcats cut into the lead 35-21. After another exchange of scores the score would be 42-35. Penn State would ice the game with a couple of field goals to make the final 48-35.

    Penn State vs Indiana

Penn State Offense Rolls Against Hoosiers

In what was supposed to be an easy win for the Penn State Nittany Lions turned into an offensive slugfest. In the first half the Indiana offense was unstoppable, scoring 27 points and piling up 350 yards of offense (most through the air). It was the second week in a row that the Penn State defense really struggled after playing solid for most of the season. The Penn State offense however was able to keep the pace in the first half. Led for the second game in a row by Beach, due to the injury to Williams, the Nittany Lions offense looked good. In the same first half that Indiana put up 27 points the Nittany Lions put up 31 points and over 300 yards. The second half would be a different story. The Penn State defense would finally seem to wake up a little bit. Indiana only managed 6 second half points and just over 100 yards. The Nittany Lions defense even added on a score of it's own on a pick six. The Penn State offense kept putting on the points and once they had a comfortable lead they chewed up the clock for a 55-33 victory.

Penn State Handles MSU in Big 10 Finale

Rust Sells Ou to Get the TD

Penn State faced 1 win and Big 10 cellar dweller Michigan State at home in the home and Big 10 finale for the Nittany Lions. It was a very emotional Senior Day for several of the Penn State players who were playing their final home game in Happy Valley. The snow was coming down hard for this one and had an effect on how the game was played. Michigan State received the ball to begin the game and was able to take a 3-0 lead. Penn State was able to respond in just over a minute. Beach found Dukes open and Dukes took the pass in for six.

Dukes Puts Penn State Up 7-3

After a stop by the Penn State defense Penn State would get the ball and march down the field to get into scoring range. Penn State would use up almost four minutes of clock to get down to the MSU one yard line. Beach would take the option in over the right side. Michigan State would answer back quickly. Maxwell would fine a wide open Spencer over the middle. Spencer would proceed to break a couple of tackles and take it into the endzone from 64 yards out. Michigan State appeared to be in the game at this point as the score was 14-10. Penn State would then get it's offense into gear as they were able to score a pair of touchdowns before the half ran out. The first touchdown would come from Burnett as he took the toss in from 16 yards out. The second TD would come with 13 seconds left in the half when Beach found Anderson open on the slant.

    The First TD by Burnett

Penn State would get the ball to start the second half. The offense would slowly move the ball down the field eating up all of the clock and subsequently killing all hope for the Spartans. Penn State would get down to the three yard line when Beach would give the ball to Rust on the option. Rust would leap over the pile where he was met by a Michigan State defender. Rust would flip through the air and land over the goaline for a touchdown. The Rust TD extended the Penn State lead to 35-10.

Rust Flips in the Endzone to Ice the Game

After the Rust touchdown Penn State would put in their second unit. The second unit would play decently. They wouldn't allow a point, but didn't give up a score to the Spartans either. Penn State would close out the game and their Big 10 season with a 35-10 victory. Penn State finishes the season 7-1 in Big 10 play. Next week the Nittany Lions play their last regular season game against against a tough North Carolina State team. Penn State could be up for a possible BCS berth depending on how the ranking shake up and of course if they can manage to beat the Wolfpack.
