    No Promises in Off-Season Recruiting?

We talked about this in the other thread and with the offseason stuff tonight I just wanted to clarify.

So are we not going to allow the use of promises in the offseason?

Seems like they are buggy this year and honestly if we all agree to not use them we shouldn't put ourselves at any kind of huge disadvantage in recruiting (it doesn't look like the computer uses them).

We used them last year. I dont care either way. It sounds like if you use them there is no chance to carry through with them which makes your program look like ish.

i thought the only downside is guys might transfer because what you promised them isn't met?

that's what concerns me - a guy who's probably not going to get a guy anyway so he throws a boat load of promises at him to keep him from going to a rival or to get a season or two out of him to fill a whole in their roster.

If they work they are great because if you blow it and a guy leaves you take that hit and another one on your pitches or prestige I think.

If they dont work, then the same thing happens except you have not shot to make the promise come true.

So do we know for certain that they dont work?

    My thought is this.

There are several players that I was going after with the thought that they might play for me and that even though I'm not #1 on their list, I wanted to hopefully just take it to the offseason and promise the farm.

I think we should be consistent within any year, for instance this way you don't waste time chasing players for no reason.

I think if we make a rule like this we should make it at the beginning of the year. And to be clear, I recommend we DO make this rule... starting next year.

But if the commish/others decide they wanna do it this year, then by all means...

I agree, so we allow this year and ban them for the next year.

so how about a compromise? anybody currently on your board you can use promises for. any new players or any player you add to your board you can't use promises.

(of course we'd have to be on the honor system for this).

I would like the add the following rider to the Gilmore Compromise ...

"The gentleman from Tennessee with the number one recruiting class can kindly shut the fuck up."

    Thank you Mr. Speaker.
