North Carolina Opens Up the Season in Hostile Territory, Walks Away Victorious

Bryn Renner took one hard look at the field, and then with a sigh of relief, headed towards the visitors locker. UNC fans can breathe a sigh of relief as well, as their Tar Heels escaped a relentless LSU squad that looked like they had control of the game. However, Renner made Coach Nguyen look like a genius for starting him instead of senior TJ Yates.

LSU struck first with a fg, but HB Shaun Draughn would put UNC up 7-3 with a 3yrd TD. Draugn would score on another rushing TD in the second quarter, but LSU QB Jordan Jefferson threw two strikes to Russell Shephard and Chris Tolliver to put the Tigers ahead 17-14 at halftime. Renner would throw an interception to start the second quarter, his second of the game. LSU capitalized on a Jefferson keeper, putting LSU in the drivers seat at 24-14.

With the LSU offense rolling and their fans roaring in approval, Renner showed what he was made of by guiding UNC to 17 straight points, finding his favorite receiver Greg Little for 2 TD's along the way. LSU would score one more time to tie up the score. Showing his maturity and accurate arm, Renner lead UNC on a 4 and a half minute drive, capped off with the winning FG as 2 seconds remained on the clock. LSU would be stopped on the ensuing squib kick, as UNC stormed the field.

"This was a fantastic win. A new qb, hostile territory, backs against the wall...to come out and respond against that defense was incredible," said coach Nguyen. "I never had a doubt. Renner is our guy." The defense definitely played a huge role in the win, with timely interceptions and hard hits throughout the game. "This is UNC football baby. Those guys started dancing around and joking around when they were up two scores," said ROLB Bruce Carter, who had two INT's. "It ain't over til it's over. UNC all day every day."
