Would OU contain the Aggies explosive offense? Kirk didn't think they could

It wasn't pretty but the end result was Oklahoma did what they had to do win the game.

A lot was on the line for these two teams, not only was the winner most likely going to wind up the Big 12 winner, they were still both alive for a possible BCS title game. The Aggies defense came out strong and set the tone with an aggressive scheme that seemed geared to bottle up Thomas Robertson. OU's offense was smothered early on and T-Rob could not get going as Aggie defenders swarmed him. Before long the Sooners found themselves in an early 10-0 hole in the first quarter. OU finally got on the board with a field goal which was fueled by a long return to the Aggie 40 yard line by returner Josh Brown. On the Aggies ensuing possession, OU's All American corner back Stephen Graves made an outstanding play that wound up going back for six for the Sooners. Graves, playing the flats drifted back on a pass meant for Aggies halfback Nash, tipped it to himself and managed to haul it in and raced for the endzone knotting the score at 10. The junior CB who has had a great career set the school record for the most interceptions.

The momentum swung back the Sooners way, thanks to Graves INT return.

OU with the momentum now, forced another INT from the Aggie junior QB and scored again to take the lead 17-10. While OU wasn't able to move the ball all that well, playing with a short field helped greatly. Another key moment in the game came in the waning minutes of the second quarter. Facing a 4th and 1 from the Aggie 45 yard line, coach Rhude decided to play defense and sent in the punting unit and pinned A&m down on their 9 yard line. The move immediately paid dividends as the Aggie QB would throw his 3rd INT of the half, this one grabbed by MLB Jackson who took it down to the Aggie 5 yard line. Three plays later it was 24-10 as OU led at the half.

In the second half OU stayed aggressive on defense constantly harrassing Aggie QB Hall. After the teams traded touchdowns, OU took a 31-17 lead into the 4th. The Aggies would pull closer 31-24 and would get the ball back again with about 4:30 left in the game, but Hall threw anothe pick ending the threat. With 2 minutes left in the game all OU had top do was run out the clock to preserve the win, but the Aggie defense again made a stop. They were also helped out by some bone headed play calling by coach Rhude who called for a pass on 2nd and long instead of just handing off to T-Rob. So the Aggies had one more chance, but Hall quickly ended that by throwing his 5th INT of the day as OU MLB Jackson made his second of the day.

The Sooners prevailed and kept their slim BCS hopes alive.

    Miscellaneous:
    - OU entered the game with the #1 run defense in the nation holding opponents to a paltry 390 yards. Aggie HB Nash saw that was no fluke as he was held to 1.9 yards per carry and didn't even gain 30 yards. OU also held Texas A&M well below their scoring average of 54.3 per game

    - Thomas Robertson had to grind his way to 100 yards, as he was held to 3.1 per carry by the aggressive Aggie defense.

    - OU came into this game with one of the worst pass defenses in the game but held Aggie QB Hall to just 205 yards passing.

    - Punting on 4th and 1 was one of the key plays in this game. OU got the ball right back and had an easy score right before the half.

    - After losing the first two games, the Sooners have beaten the Aggies three straight times.

GG ryno, had your QB not wet himself all game, you probably win this game. You played well enough on defense, that's for sure.
