A late interception by star strong safety Damion Thomas preserved a close win for the Ole Miss Rebels against the visiting Oregon State Beavers. In the first quarter each team scored a touchdown as Ole Miss had a drive fueled mostly by the run and a 13-yd TD run by Marquice Caldwell, and the Beavers answered with a beautiful pass over the middle against Cover 2 for a 35 yard touchdown from Blount to Arnold. Ole Miss seemingly took control in the second quarter as they scored on a 71-yard TD pass from Huff to Singleton, then on an 11-yarder from Huff to TE J. Washington, who is a freshman that is going to give people fits his entire career. We had an extra possession in the quarter thanks to a nice interception by OLB Shane Weber and played very solid defense overall. We then kicked a field goal to make it 24-7 at the half. Oregon State took the second half kickoff and was able to score a field goal after a long pass up the right sideline. We felt very good about holding them. Our team started to spring a few leaks in the second half, it was something I'd never seen where we would have multiple people running right next to an opposing player and nobody would really go for the tackle. Oregon State threw one up over the middle into double coverage and somehow none of the Rebels went for the ball and Arnold had another touchdown catch easily outrunning the bewildered defense and it was 24-17. We countered with a 40-yard TD pass of our own where the man defense just started getting predictable and we banked on it. Tobias Singleton made a nice cut and lost everybody and made it 31-17. Oregon State threw a screen pass to the HB on the very next possession, and we had about 5 defenders running stride-for-stride with him up the left sideline but nobody went for the tackle. 80 yards and it was 31-24. With just over a minute remaining Ole Miss managed to drain the Oregon State timeouts but couldn't run out the clock and had to punt it back. The Beavers completed one nice pass to around midfield but then attempted one in the vicinity of Damion Thomas in one-on-one coverage. Thomas picked it off to end the game. Great comeback Boda and I look forward to the next time we play.
