    VFB Stuggart @ Marseille

Marseille came out of the gates slow in the season opener. Stuggart controlled play throughout the opening half. Both squads played very good defensive football. Stuggart had the better of the chances but at the end of the first 45, the game was all notted up at 0.

Play began to open up early in the second half as Marseille had a great chance when striker Andre-Pierre Gignac broke free.. The strong target man tried to get cute and slide a pass over to a streaking Mattieu Valbuena but the Stuggart keeper made a great play to deflect the great opportunity. Marseille finally broke free in the 79th minute as Loc Remy placed a nice cross to Valbuena who headed home the goal for the all important 1-0 lead. Instead of changing to a more defensive strategy, Marseille kept the attacking mentality and it ended up burning them. Only 3 minutes after taking the lead, Stuggart answered. Cacau made a couple of nifty little moves and smashed home the equalizer in the 82nd minute. Marseille would get one last chance in the 90th minute when Taye Taiwo was awarded a free kick from about 25/30yds out. Taiwo smashed a beautiful shot but the Stuggart keeper deflected the ball off the crossbar and out of play. That would do it, it was a hard fought 1-1 draw.

The French club was not happy about the draw but it was what they deserved. Stuggart surprised the Marseille coach with his great defense and nice buildup play. Credit goes out to the German club in what was a great game and we surely look forward to the rematch later in the season.

    Marseille @ VFL Wolfsburg

For the second consecutive game, French Club Marseille squared off against a physical German side. Marseille was buzzing all over the pitch from the get go. The scoring opened up in the 15th minute as Loc Remy picked up a loose ball and smashed home his first goal of the season. 21 minutes later, CDM M'Bia broke free on a sneaky through ball and placed a nice finesse shot in the bottom right corner of the goal to give the french side a 2-0 lead and they would take that lead into half.

The second half would be more of the same as Andre-Pierre Gignac would finally get his name on the scoresheet. He netted 2 second half goals.. Both goals were assisted by Mattieu Valbuena on nice little plays. The final score would see Marseille win comfortably 4-0.

If Marseille can keep up this type of play, they would be tough to beat. We happen to believe is was just one of those days for Wolfsburg and we can imagine that they will be ready for the trip to Stade Velodrome. Wolfsburg played well but just did not get any breaks. The French side was hoping for 6 points coming out of the opening week but will have to settle for 4. Two tough games will be on the horizon as they face league leaders Villareal and one of the early favorites to take the league title this season Werder Bremen. Should be a couple of great games.
