The potential will go down for most of them the longer they stay in your system. Getting a actual 5* will be very rare.
I think Ive got the draft class where I want it. You're right. Ive never seen so much talent in the draft. At the most, i like to see by bottom 3rd of 1st round for all 5 stars to be off the board. However ... OOTP is smart and will compensate with draft classes. If it thinks the league needs more talent, it will give a deeper draft pool. Same with positions. If it feels 3b is weak, you'll see a draft with like 10 good 3b. As for potential itself? It fluctuates on both ends for players. Ive seen 10th round picks develop into 5* studs. Of course the opposite happens more frequently...
Incorrect. The secret is knowing when to promote to different levels or demote if need be. A 5* left in rookie ball forever of course hes going to fail. Also age is a big key.
I didn't know that. When I've looked at some draft eligible players that had high potential using the commissioner tool their potential were really low in important areas. For example a 4* potential pitcher who had control ratings in the 20s. Do those potential ratings change over time as well?
There is overall and then there is potential. Normally listed as 4/10 or something. The number to the left are their actual ratings, the number to the right is what their ratings can grow to if all goes well. There are of course players who will never hit their potential, and then there are those who outperform other players (just like real baseball) The yellow stars are what there overall is now, silver is what they can grow to. And yes, potentials can go up or down.
Nice. I've been playing OOTP for a few years now and while I knew that players played above their ratings I didn't know that potential actually fluctuated. Guess I should have read the manual more.
Yeah there is actually something we can install once guys get more comfortable called "Statslab" Has much more detailed stats, you can draft from it while at work or whatever and it shows guys development including if they gain potential. Its much easier to read than the report in game which shows this already. Player development report in your team reports menu.
Not at this time. Too much information on a 1-20 scale. Id like to keep it as vague as possible. Personally id prefer 20-80 like real scouts use.
i think that 0=20 would be a good start. 0-10 just seems too generic, players are lumped together too tightly.
That's the point. You should have as little knowledge as possible about the "true" ratings of players. Just like real baseball. The more vague the ratings scale the more you have to factor in stuff like age and performance when evaluating players. If you take a player with for instance a 6 in contact, if you expand that to 1-100 he may be 60 on the dot. Or 69 which is nearly 70. A huge difference.
So where did we land with the draft file? I entered into a trade negotiation thinking the draft set-up was going to be the OOTP default. I noticed in reading one of these threads that there was a potential to seriously limit the number over overall 5 stars, etc. Can I please get a call one way or another where we landed? I don't want to make a deal thinking one thing and it is another. Thanks!
Never thought of it that way but it makes sense now. My question for the group is, are there any automated things I should turn off before this first sim? For example in NCAA you can spend two hours filling out your preseason recruiting board and if you didn't know to turn off the assists you come back week 1 with your board filled with randoms.
I believe it gives you control of everything right off the bat. The only thing I changed to auto was setting Minor League linups/rotations.
Alright, I'll find that. Seems like a good idea to to not control all of my teams for the beginning while I try and learn the mechanics of the game. Oh and. how can Ian kennedy be one of the best players in basball but be rated as only above average. Grrrrr
Well I messed around with this pretty heavily. One thing that was noted was that in this year's draft class, there are a good bit of actual RL prospects. So I didn't want to change that too much. I think we will go with 20 round draft this time around and probably future seasons. It will be a learning curve. My goal is to have most of the prospects gone by 10th-15th pick in 1st round if possible. Then have prospects available until the end of 2nd round. Finally, 3rd round and later will be the and below guys. I have a feeling though, that this draft class will still be kind of heavy in terms of talent beyond the 1st round. Irregardless of all of this though, consider that for any draft, your picks still have a lot of value in the early rounds. We're all in the same boat each year. Well he did have a career year last year, but I just looked at him and his ratings are pretty effin' good compared to the rest of the league. He's certainly an ace but probably a tier 2 guy. Halladay, Kershaw, etc are your tier 1 guys.
This. Unless I really have a big time prospect I want to make sure is getting plenty of work in the minors, in my coaching options I set manage minor league lineups and pitching to be controlled by minor leage managers.
Whats the deal with potential? If I have a 19 year old with potential will it stay there forever or can it change throughout his career? Are their batting/pitching potentials change and how often do players play above/below their potential.
Potential can stay the same or go down or up just depending on how he develops, luck and injuries. All ratings have the possibility of changing. As for playing above or below their potential? Happens all the damn time. Just like real baseball.
What does it mean when it say's that a payers contract ends at the end of the year but is automatically renewed?
Here is the dumbed down answer: $480,000 is the minimum salary. If a player begins the year on the major league roster, or is promoted at any time, that is his salary for the year. That is his salary until he goes to arbitration which typically happens after 3 years. There are some exceptions to when players go to arbitration (some go earlier). So basically... he can earn that salary for 3 years. Irregardless of when arbitration starts, they are elligible for free agency once they have 6 years of ML service time.
To add... If you demote the player after spring training of next year and do not bring him up, he will have a minor league contract, which counts as nothing in terms of your payroll. You can also cut him at the end of the year, and nothing is counted against your payroll. But I prefer to demote them if you can.
If your thinking about moving a player is it a better idea to leave him on your roster even though your probobly gonna trade him? I guess I wwonder about the effects of moving a player to the trading block be fore a trade? And if I have a player listed in the forums as on the block do I need to do the same in ootp?
