S On the 1st play from scrimmage Notre Dame sacked Pete Lewis and the Ducks knew they had better wake up and wake up quick! Oregon's 2nd play from scrimmage Pete found a streaking Tucker Holley who went up for the ball and took it away from the Notre Dame defender and raced 83 yards for the 7-0 lead!On ND's 1st play, Oregon expected pass and got pass, they had everyone covered and the DE's in spy! The QB Terrence Laundry took off and made to guys miss and it was suddenly 7-7 barely a minute into the game!! Oregon slowed things down as Lewis went to work through the air again and using Jeff Burns to keep the ND defense honest. Burns took a huge lick and went out of the game but back-up Derek Romero came in to score his 10th TD on the season to go up 14-7! Notre Dame made was looked to be a HUGE mistake on their 2nd drive when Tom Anderson stepped in front of a Landry pass to give Oregon back to the ball! With Oregon driving Notre Dame came up big sacking Lewis to force a punt. This time Notre Dame put together a nice drive but got down at the the Duck 10 yard-line and stalled out. They would kick a 27 yard FG to pull within 14-10 with 1:35 to play. On Oregon's next play Jeff Burns said hello to the Orange Bowl crowd with an 81 yard burst to give Oregon the 21-10 lead with 1:16 to play before halftime! Notre Dame with 3 timeouts went to the hurry up offense and got down inside the Duck 25 yard line but Landry left the pocket and OLB Frank Gray came up from behind and stripped the ball! Anderson jumped on it for Oregon and the Duck were in business with 23 seconds and all 3 TO's! Oregon came out in 5 wide, which has not been seen much all year. The worked their way down to the 17 yardline of Notre Dame and called a timeout with 7 seconds left on the clock. Coach Hokie debated on trying a shot into the endzone or takeing the 3. It didnt take long...a 14 point lead at the half of the National Title Game? Yeah lets kick it...it sailed through and Oregon lead 24-10 at the half! The second half started just as the game did. Notre Dame called a run play and Oregon came sleep walking again! Scott Pace took it 78 yards to bring Notre Dame to within 24-17 and it only took 15 seconds! Oregon finally decided to bring their running game in and took almost 5 and half minute off the clock before Burns would take it in from 1 yard out to give Oregon the 31-17 lead with 1:24 to play on the 3rd Quarter. Notre Dame came into this game with a great game plan. Last game Oregon was able to get to Landry but not this game. Notre Dame used the play-action passing game to perfection keeping the Ducks off balance. Being off balance the Ducks allowed Notre Dame to go down the field again and score on what looked like a sure INT for the Ducks but it went right through the hands of a DUCK for a ND TD with 6:23 to play! After a punt by Oregon, the Duck forced a punt by Notre Dame with just over 2 minutes to play. Oregon came out in the BIG Package was Notre Dame knew what was coming for sure! Jeff Burns was going to get the ball and Oregon was going to try and kill the clock. Instead Burns busted another run of 60 yards for the TD! Jeff ran through a tackler and making another miss and he was gone! Sending Oregon into the final minutes leading 38-24. Notre had one last shot at it but on 4th and 8 Oregon called a zone blitz and the nose man for Oregon dropped back into the middle and swatted the ball down sealing the National Championship for Coach Hokie and his DUCK!Great Game OnIowa!
