The Carolina Panthers continue to look like a team convinced they are on the cusp of great things as they went into Washington's FedEx Field and defeated rookie phenom Robert Griffin III and the Redskins 38-28. 1st Quarter Washington would strike first on the opening possession as RGIII would connect with receiver Pierre Garcon for a 54 yard TD pas and an early 7-0 lead. Not to be outdone, the reigning rookie of the year, Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, would drive Carolina right down field and answer back with a 14 yard TD pass to receiver Louis Murphy. Murphy was forced into the starting role on Carolina's 2nd offensive play of the game after number one receiver Steve Smith would leave the game after catching a 59 yard bomb from Newton on the Panthers 1st offensive play. It was determined that Smith suffered a fractured collar bone and will miss significant time. 2nd Quarter Carolina would have a chance to take the lead, just before the half, as Newton drove the team into Redskins territory in the final minute. With just 5 seconds left on the clock and the ball at the 1 yard line, Newton and the Panthers would take a chance and he lofted a pass to A.J. Green in the endzone. The pass was broken up, but 1 second remained on the clock and allowed the Panthers to add a Mare field goal to take a 10-7 lead going into halftime. 3rd Quarter The Panthers would get the ball first in the 2nd half and would drive down field and score on a 23 yard run by halfback Taiwan Jones. Panthers lead 17-7. On the first play of the ensuing drive, the Redskins would strike immediately as RGIII connected on a short throw to Garcon, who turned upfield and didn't stop until he reached the endzone for the 70 yard score. 17-14 Panthers with just under 5 minutes in the 3rd. The Panthers appeared primed to answer right back as Cam drove them right back down field, into Redskins territory again. Newton would try to float one to the endzone, from about 30 yards out, to Green, but he put too much air under the ball and Redskins CB Josh Wilson would make a great play on the ball to secure the interception in the endzone. It appeared momentum was clearly swinging in Washington's favor, as they now had a chance to tie the game or take the lead on this possession. That was until Panthers linebacker Jason Williams would come up huge with an interception that he was able to take back 25 yards for the score, pushing the Panthers lead back to 10 at 24-14 with just over a minute to go in the 3rd quarter. The play was not only huge for the Panthers, but to Williams himself, who is trying to show he deserves the starting LOLB spot that he stepped into after the trade of James Anderson to the Bengals last week. 4th Quarter The Panthers would score again early in the 4th as Newton connected with tight end Greg Olsen in the back of the endzone, fo a 7 yard touchdown. Panthers lead 31-14 with just over 5 minutes to go in the game. The Redskins offense would then put together a great drive that was capped off by a 16 yard TD run by RGII right up the gut. It appeared it may be too little too late as the Panthers still led 31-21 with three and a half minute on the clock. On the ensuing kickoff, the Redskins would catch the Panthers napping, as they came out in an onside kick formation. Rather than call a timeout, the Panthers elected to audible into the onside recover formation and the decision would prove to be costly. The onside kick would bounce right off of a backup TEs hands and be recovered by the Skins. Washington would capitalize on the recovery, as they scored on an 11 yard Griffin TD pass to Santana Moss. The Redskins were back within 3, at 31-28, with just under 2 minutes to go in the game. The Panthers were prepared this go round with the hands team out there to attempt to recover the onside kick. Receiver Greg Little would make a great play on a high bouncing ball, catching it at the peak of his jump, and secure it to give the Panthers possession. The Redskins burned both of their timeout to stop the clock on 1st and 2nd down runs, they had lost a timeout on a failed challenge of an Olsen sideline grab earlier in the half. With still nearly 2 minutes to go and facing a 3rd and short, the Panthers had a decision to make. With the Redskins crowding the box, appearing to sell out for an expected run, Cam audibled into a pass and found Taiwan Jones 20 yards down field by himself. Jones hauled in the pass and the lightning quick back usually known more for his speed than his power, broke through no less than 4 different defenders on his way to the endzone for a 37 yard touchdown. With the score, the Panthers lead would be back to 10 at 38-28 with 1:39 left in the game. On the Skins final drive; Griffin would try his best to create plays, but his receivers would be blanketed by Panther defenders and he would be sacked three times on their last possession. The Panthers look forward to returning home next week as The Denver Broncos come to town, in a match up of the leagues top scoring teams. ----------------------------------- GG Casino Good luck the rest of the way!
