The Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are two teams that are thought by many to be on the rise in this league, young and talented but with some growing up yet to do. With a game that was equal parts great plays and terrible ones alike, both teams seemed to reinforce this image of themselves, as the Panthers defeated the Buccaneers 52-21 at Carolina's Bank of America Stadium.

    1st Quarter

The Panthers defense came into this game with a great intensity, and that showed through early in the 1st quarter, as they put the first points on the board. Veteran cornerback Chris Gamble would jump a Tampa Bay pass over the middle and return the ball 22 yards for the score and the 7-0 Carolina lead.

Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman would show great resolve for such a young player; as he bounced right back to lead the Bucs down field for the score on a 29 yard TD pass to tight end Charles Clay on their next possession, to tie the game at 7.

    2nd Quarter

Tampa Bay would take the lead, midway through the 2nd quarter, as Freeman connected with rookie halfback Michael Smith for a 25 yard touchdown and a 14-7 lead.

The lead didn't last long, as Panthers return man Taiwan Jones would take the ensuing kickoff back 96 yards for the touchdown, to tie the game at 14.

The Panthers defense would once again give their team the lead as Gamble would once again jump a Freeman pass, this time in the flat, and return the ball 41 yards for his second pick 6 on the day and a 21-14 Panther lead.

The situation went from bad to worse for the Buccaneers as rookie cornerback Josh Norman would get in on the act with a pick 6 of his own. With less than a minute on the clock, Freeman tried to force the ball down field and Norman was in position for the interception and returned it 42 yards for the score and a 28-14 Panther lead going into the half.

    3rd Quarter

Tampa Bay would cut into the Panthers lead, early in the 3rd quarter, as Freeman once again connected with Clay for a score. The play was set up by a muffed punt return by Jones, following an apparent three and out forced by the Panthers D on the opening possession. Jones would simply drop the ball uncontested and Buccaneers veteran cornerback Ronde Barber would recover the fumble. Freeman would make a great play, where he scrambled and shook off three different Panther defenders, before lofting the 14 yard touchdown pass into the endzone and Clay's waiting hands. Panthers lead 28-21.

Panthers quarterback Cam Newton would finally show up on the ensuing drive, as he connected with tight end Greg Olsen for a 64 yard touchdown pass, to push Carolina's lead back to 2 touchdowns at 35-21.

The Panthers would capitalize on another Tampa turnover as Deangelo Williams would take a handoff and cruise 46 yards to the endzone. Panthers lead 42-21.

    4th Quarter

The Panthers would continue to grind it out on the ground as they added a 31 yard Olindo Mare field goal, and Williams would add another touchdown from 38 yards out.

The Panthers defense was the difference in this one, as they intercepted Freeman 5 times on the day, returning three for touchdowns.
