Penn State vs North Carolina State

Penn State Avenges Loss at Home

Penn State was looking to started off on the right foot against the tough #17 North Carolina State Wolfpack. The sting of the loss from a year ago that knocked the Nittany Lions out of a BCS Bowl still could be felt by the faithful. Penn State received the ball to start the game off and moved down the field for the 7-0 lead. An interception by Penn State's Bell on North Carolina State's first drive set up the Nittany Lions again. The Nittany Lions scored on a pass from Freshman QB Watkins to go up 14-0. After another stop and score Penn State was up 21-0 and looking good, but then the Wolfpack fought back by returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown. The rest of the half would be scoreless and it would remain 21-7. The second half would be much more of a low scoring affair as Penn State won the half 10-3. A couple of big pass plays, some consistent running, and another Bell pick kept the Wolfpack from mounting a comeback. Penn State celebrated the victory and felt some of the pain of last year lift away but they know they have to get back to work next week as they travel to hostile College Station to take on the Texas A&M Aggies.

Penn State Struggles on the Road

Penn State went into College Station and looked slow and sluggish on defense the whole game. Thankfully the offense was ready to play and bailed them out, in rain soaked Kyle Field. After allowing a first drive TD the Nittany Lions responded with a huge play from super freshman Jeff Watkins.

Watkins Shows Off the Wheels on the First Offensive Play

The rest of the game would be Penn State going ahead of Texas A&M then A&M closing the gap then Penn State extending it again. By the fourth quarter Penn State had enough cushion to send in the second string and chew the clock, but even then Texas A&M still kept fighting calling timeouts and kicking onside kicks. Penn State Defense Keys Victory

Penn State's defense puts together an outstanding performance holding Northwestern to around 100 yards of total offense on the day. The Penn State offense led by Jeff Watkins held its own with the Wildcats finding it hard to stop the Nittany Lions.

Penn State Win Sets Up Ohio State Rematch

Penn State keeps the winning streak going over the #25 Minnesota Gophers at home. Once again the Nittany Lions put together a full team effort to take down it's opponent. The Penn State offense put up over 500 yards of total offense and limited the Gophers to half of that mark. Watkins yet again went over 100 yards passing and rushing as he has shown off his skill early in the season. He will be put to the ultimate test the next two weeks as he will face the top two teams in the country. First the Nittany Lions will host the number one ranked Buckeyes, who shut out the Nittany Lions last year, and then a trip to the number two Wolverines, the defending Big Ten Champs and National Runner-Up. These next two weeks will set the tone for the rest of the Penn State season. If the young Nittany Lions can upset the two favorites they will et themselves up for a potential Big Ten Title, but two losses will have them looking for answers and put them in the same hole they finished last season in.

    Penn State vs Illinois

Nittany Lions Back on Winning Track

Penn State rebounded from two straight losses to beat the Illinois Fighting Illini. For most of the game it looked like Illinois was going to hang in the game, but the Nittany Lions were able to pull away in the end. On the first drive of the game Illinois drove down to the one yard line setting up first and goal. The Nittany Lion defense got tough and held to a fourth down in which the Illini elected to go for it. The Lion's defense stepped up yet again and made a stop to give the ball to its O.

Pass Knocked Down on Fourth Down

The stop would give the Nittany Lions much needed momentum and that would carry them to a lead late, but Illinois was hanging around down 28-14, but Star Freshman Watkins would seal the deal with a long touchdown run to start the fourth.

    Watkins Doing Work

Watkins was the star of the game throwing for over 100 yards and rushing for over 100 yards. He had the one touchdown that you saw, and he had another one where the LB could just not compete with his athleticism.

    Watkins Touchdown Run

The Nittany Lions defense played great all game despite giving up 21 points to the Illini. The defense allowed less than 250 total yards and less than 50 yards on the ground. Next week Penn State will take on #4 Notre Dame who will be looking for revenge after the huge Penn State comeback in Happy Valley.

    Penn State vs Notre Dame

Watkins leads Nittany Lions Past Notre Dame

For the second year in a row, Penn State and Notre Dame played in a thriller. Last year it was the largest comeback in Nittany Lions history this year it was an back-and-forth overtime spectacular. The Lions were in control the whole game, but every time they would extend their lead the Irish would close the gap. Freshman QB Jeff Watkins was the story of the game. He has showed glimpses of greatness all year but today he was flat of amazing. He threw for over 200 yards and ran for over 200 yards, including a 72 yard long.

Watkins Breaks Off the Long Run

    First TD of the Game

Penn State was able to get a score early thanks to a short pass from Watkins. The Nittany Lions would take hold the lead for most off the half and Watkins was able to work his magic again, but this time through the air to increase Penn State's lead. He hit Oliver for the 70 yard touchdown pass.

Long TD Pass from Watkins to Oliver

Notre Dame would fight back to within cut to lead to six points, but then Penn State and Watkins got the ball back. Watkins was able to do it with his legs once again. This time it would be on the midline from just shy of 40 yards out. The Watkins TD put Penn State up 34-21 early in the fourth quarter.

    Watkins Scores Again

Notre Dame would score on it's next drive, but just like last year their kicker would fail them. If you remember back to last year the ND kicker missed an extra point and the Irish ended up losing by one point. This year the kicker would miss another PAT, and with this miss the Irish were down seven instead of six. Penn State and Notre Dame would exchange punts and the Nittany Lions would get the ball back trying to end the game. However, the Irish defense would step up and force a stop. The ND offense would march down the field and with 16 seconds left they would be just inside the 40 yard line. The Irish would score on a 39 yard catch in run to tie the game with less than 10 seconds left. The missed extra point would have won the Irish the game, but instead it went to overtime.

    Notre Dame Ties It

In overtime a sack and a couple of incomplete passes made Notre Dame attempt a long field goal. The kicker missed wide right and Penn State had a chance to win the game. A fifteen yard run by Wilson got Penn State close in for a chip shot field goal. Jones stepped up and nailed the game winner to give the Nittany Lions the 37-34 victory.

    Penn State vs Wisconsin

    Penn State Beats the Badgers

The Nittany Lions were at home looking for their second straight victory over the Badgers. Penn State got off to a fast start as the stopped Wisconsin on its first drive, and then scored a touchdown. Then the Nittany Lions got a pick six and another interception that set up a score and put them up 21-0

Watkins Puts Penn State Up 7-0

Pick Six Puts Penn State Up 14-0

After Wisconsin got down 21-0 they Coach Tuco decided to make a QB change and it was a good idea, as the backup quarterback was virtually unstoppable. It seemed like he couldn't miss and found holes in the Penn State defense all over the field. The Badgers cut the lead to 21-7 with just over a minute left in the half. Penn State had the ball and was driving to go up 28-7, but Watkins made a huge mistake with an errant throw that was picked off. Wisconsin made the most of their opportunity with a TD to cut the lead to 21-14. Penn State got the ball to start the second half and for the first couple of drives the Nittany Lions and Badgers would go back and forth, but then Watkins went down with a strained shoulder. The Badgers defense stepped it up and got another pick that was returned to to inside the ten yard line.

    Wisconsin Pick

With the momentum on Wisconsin's side Penn State needed a big play and got it from HB Burnett. Burnett took the pitch and went nearly 60 yards for the touchdown.

    Big Blocks Spring Burnett

Later in the game Penn State trailed by seven points and were driving for the tie, early in the fourth. Wisconsin stopped the Nittany Lions and forced field goal attempt on fourth and short. On the next drive Wisconsin couldn't manage anything on the next drive and Penn State got the ball back. Williams led them down the field and took the lead by three. Wisconsin answered right back with a good drive of their own, but Penn State stepped up and held them to a fourth and three. Coach Tuco decided to take the sure three points and the tie. Penn State would get the ball with less than a minute left and they were looking for the win. After a sack on first down Coach Tuco decided to call the Badgers first timeout so that they could possibly get the ball back and win the game. However on the second down and nineteen, Williams threw a strike for the first down near midfield. With the big completion suddenly the Nittany Lions were in business and had all three timeouts. A couple of plays later Penn State was in field goal range. A toss set the ball up in the middle of the field and on came the kicking unit to try for the win. Coach Tuco used his last timeouts to freeze the kicker, but it didn't phase the senior who nailed the kick to win 41-38.

    Penn State vs Nebraska

Penn State goes into hostile Nebraska and is able to come away with a victory. The Nittany Lions jumped out to an early lead 35-3 before Nebraska added a couple of late touchdowns against the second and third string. Williams filled in nicely for the injured Watkins as he successfully led his team to a win. Next week Williams will be the QB again as Watkins is still out with an injury.

    Penn State vs Michigan State

For the second year in a row the Penn State Nittany Lions beat Michigan State to take w home the Land-Grant Trophy. In what was a surprisingly close, but boring game. Penn State struggled early but the Spartans never really challenged them. Williams once again played good, he got only his second start of the year after starting all 13 games last year, and showed that maybe he should have been the guy instead of Watkins. Next week Penn State finishes up its regular season when they travel to TCU. watkins could possibly be back to face the Horned Frogs, but is uncertain at this point.
