#12 Penn State taketh, giveth, then holdth, in a 42-35 thrilling win against #3 FSU

After being announced by the rest of the community with “Psycho brings a defensive tenacity that many in the league have not yet seen.” The pressure was on Coach Psycho to live up to that statement. In a uncharacteristically high scoring game for a Psycho coached team, Penn State needed that defensive “tenacity” to cause early turnovers in the first half that lead to a 21-21 tie at halftime.

After halftime it seemed that Coach Psycho get things back under control with his defense as early in the fourth quarter Penn State would get it’s third of four picks in the game giving the Nittany Lions the ball and a 35-24 lead. The 35-24 lead would not be safe because while pounding the ball and chewing the clock (did not have chew clock on) HB Curtis Dukes would tak a vicous hit and fumble the ball. Then to make things worse Penn State would get caught in a bad coverage scheme for a 55 yard bomb, FSU would get a 2 point conversion, Penn State would throw a pick on their next drive, and finally FSU would tie the game on a field goal.

With the stratch of good fortune bring FSU back to being tied with Penn State, the Nittany Lions went back to the basics, guy open, throw the ball, switch it up with ground pounding when nessesary. Which would lead to a Penn State TD, and put the Nittany Lions up 42-35.

Penn State would then hold tough and seal the deal with their fourth pick of the day on a desperation pass on fourth and sixteen.

Coach Psycho’s christening to the OFFL was rough, but he survived. Next up is a warm up game against Bowling Green which should not be as nerve racking, then Penn State travels right back down to the Sunshine State to play the Gators.

#8 Penn State Survives the Swamp with a 14-13 Win

Coach Psycho thought his controlled passing attack was going to have when he walked onto the field and was met with a driving rain storm. Of course as it turns out the receivers did a better job at holding onto the football then the runningbacks.

Penn State gets the ball to open up the game and on it’s second play of the game Dukes breaks a run up the gut for 65 yards and a TD. Reeling from the early suck punch to the gut, Florida plays conservatively and ground pounds it halfway down the field only to get stopped. A nice punt pins Penn State, but with the way they ran the ball on the first drive it should be no problem being pinned… Penn State fumbles on that drive and hands Florida the ball already in Penn State’s red zone. Florida then makes short work of the short field and ties it up at 7-7 as the first quarter comes to an end.

Pen State does get the passing game working on their next drive and takes 2:30 to get the game untied with a 5 yard pass to the TE, and takes the lead 14-7. The rest of the half is stuck in the mud as each team takes turns with stalled drives, however Florida does manage to get a field goal to cut the lead to 14-10.

First half starts with more of the same as the second quarter, both Florida and Penn State stalling out in the mud, and no points. Florida does get close to points, however on third and long Reid forces a pass down field and it gets picked. The quarter closes with Penn State driving.

In the fourth quarter Penn State is driving and looking to put the game away (seems quite similar to the Florida State game), and of course it happens again. Dukes fumbles on Florida’s 5 yardline giving them hope with about 5 minutes to play in the game. Florida responses by marching down the field to Penn State’s 7 yardline. Next play Florida gets down to the 3 on a run… wait a second “holding on the offenseâ€ÂÂ. First and goal from the 17, Florida runs a screen to get down to the 12… wait a second “holding on the offenseâ€ÂÂ. First and goal from the 27, another screen play… this time Penn State snuffs it out for a loss of 5. Florida would eventually get some yards back from the second and goal from the 32, but not nearly enough to warrant going for it. The Gators settle for a 38 yard field goal and cut the lead to 1, 14-13 with 2 minutes left. With Florida looking for a stop and a chance to win, Penn State pounds the ball away, and runs out the clock for the 14-13 victory.

From here on out Penn State will be the favorite… will the Nittany Lions get crushed under the immense press of being a National Champion contender like they’ve done for the last couple of years?
