    Blackshirts Dominate Season Opener

It was odd starting the season on the road, but the Huskers were ready to play and put last year's national title game loss behind them. The Blackshirts were absolutely dominant in this game as they shutout Fresno State. The Bulldogs were unable to move the ball much at all in this one, which was perfect for Nebraska as they were concerned about their ability to move the ball as well. The Huskers are replacing Big XII Offensive Player of the Year, Roy Helu Jr. at running back, number one WR Niles Paul and starting quarterback Zac Lee. Despite these losses, the team was able to step up and perform admirably in their first outing. Rex Burkhead was able to step in and keep the running game going without missing a beat. It was the passing game that concerned Coach Pelini most but Cody Green was able to complete two TD passes and move the ball effectively. Perhaps, the most surprising find occurred during the fourth quarter when Nebraska put in their third string freshman running back, Heard. The quickness that he showed on the field was extremely impressive as demonstrated by his 38 yard scamper for a TD. Another intriguing prospect is back up QB, Taylor Martinez. There was talk last year that Taylor would feature a more prominent role but with Lee and Green fighting it out, Martinez got brushed off because of his youth. But during the second half of this game, Taylor looked impressive as he was able to move the ball effectively. What may give him an edge is his ability to run the ball, the athleticism of Martinez could allow Nebraska to resurrect their option running game.
