The Fighting Illini lose a heartbreaker to rival Missouri in Columbia.
Columbia, MO - The Missouri Tigers (1-0) played host to rival Illinois (0-1) this weekend in the Arch Rivalry Matchup. A game that historically yields close outcomes, the Arch Rivalry stayed true to it's name providing a thrilling heartbreaker to the end..
The Tigers had to rely on the arm of freshman sensation James Franklin, as QB Blaine Gabbert was knocked out of the game early in the First Quarter with elbow bursitis. Franklin looked unsettled at best when he first entered the game, but by the Fourth Quarter the young QB was in rhythm. Franklin finished the day with 394 yards, 1 TD and 4 INTs. The running game for Missouri was almost non-existent; with both HBs getting stuffed constantly at the line on short yardage situations and Kicker Grant Rassel has the coaches worried with his 2-4 performance on the day.
Illinois proved to be a solid counterpart, amassing 162 yards on the ground. The game was busted wide open on a 65 yard rush by HB Mikel LeShoure (Illinois) early in the First, however the Tiger defense stepped it up and kept their offense in this game.
A little bit of controversy still lingers in the air today over a questionable call early in the Second Quarter. Fightin' Illini CB Tavon Wilson made a beautiful interception on the goal line, but as momentum carried him into the end zone, Wilson was tackled and called for a Safety. Those 2 points gave Missouri the win, and the thrill to live another day.
Next week, the Missouri Tigers (1-0) host Coach sdid and the Florida Gators (1-0) in Columbia
