Purdue Wins it all / Players Leaving

Note: The online file is currently at the season end week, for anybody who wants to save it

For the second straight year Purdue wins the national title with a perfect season thanks to a 37-17 win over Michigan. The Wolverines learned shortly before this game that their best player on defense (Brett Ruud) was out for the season with a bad back, and their best (fastest) running back simply never got healthy like he was supposed to. Two horrible breaks for Michigan.

The Wolverines came out firing on their first drive and went up 7-0 without any difficulty. Purdue was forced to punt, but then forced a punt in return and drove down the field. The Boilers were stopped for a field goal.

Things just fell apart for the Wolverines after that. No need to rehash the thing, 5 turnovers to none tells the whole story. It wasn't just that, it was the way they happened. All-everything QB Bobby Horn had the worst performance of his heretofore storybook career, fumbling twice (both recovered by Purdue) on the only two times he tried to run, and throwing three interceptions.

Purdue defenders were playing like they were wounded, cornered animals defending their last breath or something. The most impressive had to be OLB Ken Booth, #92. The senior, who supplanted three-year starter Russell Hixon in spring drills, made 4 tackles, 1 for loss, 1 sack, 1 FF, 1 FR, and also interecepted a pass near the goal line that he returned 97 yards for a TD. He has done that twice in his career now, and each time I can't help but think of Harrison thanks to the number on his back, and his squatty build. I should have probably run that one out of bounds but my brain couldn't convert the fact that they were about to be down by only six into "I really don't need this TD."

We did nothing on the ground against Michigan's incredible run D, but in the air (thanks to the loss of Ruud) we were pretty effective. Our incompletions and passes that were batted down didn't turn into INTs, that was obviously a huge plus.

Overall the Wolves just played lackadaisical football like they didn't want to be there. Made it bittersweet seeing that team do that to Russ.
