Rookie Hans Smith stars in the spotlight against Pirates In just his first Major League start, the young left hander Hans Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals set the tone of the evening by keeping the Pirates off base for most of the night with his 93 mph fastball combined with his 67 mph Knuckleball. The lefty knuckler proved that he has the tools to be a threat to batters in the NL Central, and now all eyes are on him as he looks to solidify the end of the rotation for the Cards. Albert Pujols picked up the slack, clobbering a hanging curveball and depositing it into the left-center seats. He also knocked in an additional run in the 8th, but it was not ruled an RBI as the dropped line drive into RF was ruled an error. The Cardinals start out their first time through the starting rotation at 3-2.
