Liverpool signaled their intent with an early goal by Daniel Sturridge. Spurs looked to be stunned by the goal, but once they found their feet (and Torres remembered how to score) it would turn out to be a long day for the traveling Liverpool. Torres scored two goals in two minutes, and gave Spurs the lead, one that would not be relinquished. Seba Giovinco added a right-footed laser from 25 just before half time to give the hosts a 2-goal lead going into the half. The second half was much of the same, with Soulemayne Coulibaly making his Spurs debut and converting a Lennon cross to mark his first tally for the club. Torres achieved his hat trick with a shot that went against the grain and left Reina helpless. A very good game overall, the score probably didn't reflect how close it was, but damn Torres loves playing against his former club, scoring 7 goals in 4 matches (stat of the day!). Good game, eheskey11, always enjoy playing you! Good luck! I'll get highlights up later on tonight most likely.

The fans put on a pregame display (will be shown via video in my team page) and that fired the players up. Espanyol were looking to counter, and the game was a midfield struggle; the first save wasn't forced until the 22nd minute by Espanyol keeper Alvarez. I wasnt until the 41st minute that the deadlock was broken when Sergio Garcia, who is in fantastic form, lashed home a screamer to put Espanyol in front. They went into the half 1-0 with the Espanyol fans going crazy. The second half was a great display from both squads, shakhtar pressing forward looking for the goal and Espanyol playing good team defense. Shakhtar seemed to get frustrated at the lack of space and when they were pressing Espanyol broke on another counter and this time it was sergio Garcia the facilitator with a beautifully weighted ball from the left wing that found Verdu all alone in the box, and from 9 yards out Verdu would not miss hitting the posting and scoring. Shakhtar would later go on to score off a corner late in the game to make it a tense finish but Espanyol walked away with three points, but not without cotroversy. As soon as the game ended shakhtar players rushed the ref demanding an explanation for why an obvious penalty was not called early in the second half. The ref had to be escorted from the pitch by security. Michael Woodward. Great Game! Video of Sergio Garcia's goal will be linked shortly.
1 Liverpool v Shakhtar 1 Liverpool Reina Skrtel Ogbonna Agger De Rossi Gerrard Navas (Drogba 71') Coutinho Downing Sturridge Suarez Coutinho De Rossi Shakhtar Handanovic Dede Chygrynskiy Alaba Rakitskiy Srna Costa Hamsik Biabiany Mkhitaryan (Armero 67') Traore Traore 42' Traore 12' Srna 9.5 1 Goals 16 Shots 223 Shots on Target 1254% Possession 46%26 Tackles 170 Fouls 31 Corners 6 Shakhtar will be wondering how they didn't get all three points after hitting the post four times and having Reina make countless great saves to hold them at bay. Liverpool started the chances off in the 6th after being awarded a free kick which looked like a clean tackle about 30 yards out. Gerrard took it and struck the cross bar. Shakhtar would make a move of their own but their placed shot would strike the post. In the 35th, Liverpool took the lead when they launched a quick counter which saw 4 Liverpool players vs Alaba. Alaba made a great read when the ball was switched to Suarez at the far post. He slid in front of Suarez to block his shot but the ball bounced off his body, off Suarez's shin and rocketed out in front of Coutinho at the other post for a tap in. Bad luck for Shakhtar but Liverpool's move deserved a goal. Shakhtar would equalize in the 42nd when they earned a corner. Srna swung it in toward the near post and Chrygrynskiy headed it toward the middle of the box. Traore tried heading it in but a Liverpool defender blocked his header before stumbling backwards out of the way. The ball bounced and Traore got to it before volleying it passed Reina and Ogbonna from point blank for the goal. In the 56th, Sturridge got a shot from about 25 yards but Handanovic got down and caught it safely. In the 62nd, Troare got the ball inside the box about 10 yards out and fired but somehow Reina got to it and saved it. It came out to Mkhitaryan at the far post but his shot from point blank was also saved by Reina who had gotten up and raced to the other post. A cross was sent to Traore but just a bit too far and he would turn around and volley it for the far post but it would strike the cross bar and bounce up....Liverpool's defender tried trapping it but he trapped it off the bar himself. Then he got control and turned into a Shakhtar player who stole it off the Liverpool player and had it deflect out for another Shakhtar corner. In the 66th, a shot from inside the box was blocked out to Chrygrynskiy who fired for the right post but Reina dove over to save that one as well. In the 80th, Biabiany got down the line as he had all game and tried curling it around Reina but Reina closed him down and some how blocked it over the goal. The resulting corner was headed toward the corner by Traore but Reina saved it.
An eventful match indeed. My passing was terrible but i have know idea how i came out with a draw on that one. Great game though. The defending throughout the pitch is getting slightly better, but a long way to go yet.
