The massive gulf in skill between the members of each team showed today as Shakhtar was just too big, fast, and skilled for Chicago although the coaches were pretty equal adversaries. Shakhtar scored many goals but benefited from some VERY lucky ones. In the 14th minute, Xherdan Shaqiri got down the right flank before crossing to big Lacina Traore who flicked it home with his head. In the 25th minute, Douglas Costa exploited a slightly late offsides trap giving Taison 15 yards of space ahead of the defense to line up a 1v1 chance which he slotted home under Rybka's body. Rybka had a great game despite how many goals he allowed as he made some heroic saves. In the 26th minute, Varane slid to stop a Chicago player in the box. Shakhtar coach Michael Woodward thought that his player got the ball but none-the-less the penalty was given and Chicago finished it as they should to give some hope to the MLS side. However, it all went downhill from there. In the 45th, Lacina Traore headed home a corner which was sent in by Darijo Srna. In the 50th, Andy Johnson used some trickery to work a shot in from close range but the angle was too great and Handanovic saved it. In the 51st, one of the lucky moments rose its ugly head as a through ball sent Lacina Traore down the right wing after Chicago got over anxious with closing down. Traore tried slotting it low to the near post from an angle. The ball beat Rybka but hit the post and ricocheted straight to the onrunning Douglas Costa for an open goal tap in. Initially, it appeared Costa was in an offside position but he had actually been behind the ball when Traore shot. In the 63rd, luck rose its head another time when Traore again got down the line. This time, he tried crossing toward Costa but the ball struck the chest of Berry as Rybka was closing Traore down and looped up and back down into the corner of the goal. In the 73rd, Chicago earned a corner and Berry won it but it bounced off the post and back out to the dismay of Chicago. 2 minutes later, Marko Devic scored when Xherdan Shaqiri chipped it over the onrushing Rybka toward the back post where Devic ran onto it for a tap in. The game ended 6-1 but should have been a bit closer. Shakhtar deserved the win but benefited from a ton of luck to get so many goals.
    4th goal
5th goal, should have been an own goal but was credited to Traore for whatever reason.

The play was very back and forth until Aberdeen broke the stalemate in the 43 minute. Hayes beat his man on the wing and played a perfect cross which Dindane volleyed home. chicago fire threatened the Reds goal just before halftime but conceded a PK after the break. Alex barely kept the PK under the cross bar although this goal seemed to kill the fire's spirit. Hayes found himself wide open after a rebound in the 74' and just before the game ended dindane found himself on the end of another good cross. The game was alot more even than the scoreline suggested and Chicago battled until the PK was controversially awarded.
