Ok, day 2 in the books. My second trip was much better than my first. I understood the flow better and didn't make any major blunders. I did have a nice through ball that led to a shot, and I even scored the first goal of the night.

I wasn't quite as winded this time around, I think I calmed down and settled in. I still need to work on my touch. It is kinda tough because I don't get many passes my way and people rarely pass backwards. The bad news is, my blisters from friday have completely been ripped off my feet, so im hurting today. Tuesday isn't looking good.

All in all, I am so glad I started playing and plan on sticking with it. Timpegoose let me know when you want to come out. Tues, Fri, Sun @ 6:30.

    Nike Tiempo

They are brand new and need to be broken in. In the meantime, they are destroying my feet.

Ah ok. Tiempo's are good, but do have a stiff soleplate so it will take few sessions to break in. If you go to the park and just do some light jogging and running, it will help and wont give you as many blisters as you're getting playing full bore.

Yea, these things are killing me. I feel like the cleats are embedded into my bone.

They should be super comfortable once you break them in.

I used to swear by Total 90 Lasers for years. Now I wear f50 Adizeroes which are superlight but sacrifice comfort.

I wear the same. I like them a lot and I don't necessarily think theyre all that uncomfortable.

The synthetic ones feel funky to me, but I rock the leather version and love them. My favorite boot in a while.

There are definitely more than a few ways to skin this cat lol. That is just what I was taught a long time ago and have used that technique in soccer football and basketball. I feel like if the defender is quick enough, no one should be able to throw their belt buckle one way and go the other way. I see what youre saying though.. I use it to square up especially before making a move on the ball. Plus its funny when someone tries to go Ronaldo on you with their feet and youre just standing there waiting to take the ball;)

Its always weird/tricky to give advice on soccer because it is such a conceptual game. Something may work well one game, in one situation, and that same thing could cost you the game another time. There really is no substitute for experience though. Keep your head up during the game and try to think 2 or 3 passes ahead.

8v8 I would be looking for the open space at all times. Or as my old Egyptian soccer coach used to tell us "Find the openy spaze"

I used to rip off the adidas stripes and blackout my Copas back when I was a kid. Loved them back then, but I couldn't wear them these days. Too many other sick boots around.

I love them! I started wearing them when I was about 14 or 15, and I dont think I'll wear anything else. I have the turf version too. I wear em for flag football as well. Theyre just simple and the leather is good. I remember when I first got them I was such a lightweight that the spikes would barely go into the ground lol.

I'm hoping I make it out there tomorrow night if I get off work early enough. It might be a bit difficult for me to find at first, I've only been there once so I might be a bit late :p

I think my favorite boots are Predators. I've had 2 or 3 pairs of them and loved all of them. My only problem is I go through any pair so quickly. At most a pair of boots has lasted me a year before they blew out. I had a gold pair of Kelme Masters that I absolutely loved, but they blew out last year after they lasted about 3 years. Our practice field in college was about as good as playing in a parking lot so I ended up having to use old pairs of boots for practice and my newer ones for games.

I think the best shoes out there are Copas. I never had them but my wife religiously wears them for years. And it's gotta be good when every Adidas model stays in the market for a year or two and these pairs have been on the shelves for decades. Everytime I target Copas, I find something else and the prices attracts me, so I've never owned one.

I am an all Adidas guy. Any Nike I've owned I've hated it. And I know people exactly the other way around with Adidas vs Nike. I think everyone has a different fit. Adidas has been working best for me. I've had F5s recently, and after I played the last game on Ali Sami Yen (Galatasaray) pitch, I decided to never wear them again. The cleats still got the mud and grass stuck under. They're now antique value :) So as I was about to finally get the Copa's this time around, I ended up trying the cheap F50 version F10s, and I loved them. Those are my current pair. I feel like Adidas pairs don't even need much breaking in. I also have a backup pair that's about 5 or more years old, that look like they're about to fall apart but with little fixing they're available in case something happens to my current shoes. My friend always suggests that I grab a couple of the pair I like since by the time I need a new one, they're not on the shelves anymore (which is what happened with the F5s). But I can never justify getting two pairs at once, even with the amount of soccer I play.

Just went out and played today for the first time since October. My touch wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be after the long break, and I started off passing well. We ended up having to split into 2 games of 9v9 after playing about 14v14 for a while which was awful lol. I've been trying to stay in shape and I'm still pretty sore from the night. I can definitely tell I haven't worn my boots in forever either.. My feet might be the most sore part of my body lol.

You were dead on about the disperity of talent up there, and it definitely makes it fun. There were quite a few good players up there, and overall its a good group of guys. I got along pretty well with pretty much everybody there. I do agree that there were a couple people that tended to bitch at the less skilled players though. But, for every one of them there were one or 2 guys trying to help tonight at least.

When I started out playing, I was also a converted linebacker trying to get into the beautiful game. I had a really good support system with friends who played and am uncle who was a club team coach. If you're big that's an immediate advantage that not many players are going to have. A few tips:

Position progression: Start at left/right back. That way you'll have the support of your centerbacks and will also have the sideline as an extra defender. When you feel more confident in your defending, try out central defensive mid or central. Be prepared though, you'll be relied on for alot.

I've been playing for about 5 years, and have developed pretty damn good first touches. I've always has good field vision from my time as a MLB. More strong than fast, so I've tailored my game towards creative touches and passes, strength and using my body to bother my targets balance, and a pretty strong right foot should the opportunity arise. Oh, and being a cheeky fouler :D

Top end speed has never been a strength for me, neither has being overly technical. Watching tons of soccer seems to help to improve my decision making. Gives me hours and hours of reference points mentally and some creative ideas.

Oh cool, you ended up going. I would have, but my feet are so torn up I needed a day off. I'm surprised they went 14v14... on sunday we had 28 and they had 2 7v7 going and those inflated to 9v9 by the end. I am going Friday for sure, so I will try to catch you then if you go. I think I have announced to everyone there that I have never played before, so the expectations are low. It would be nice to get some pointers from you though.

I agree, even though our pickup games are more free flowing, I would say the LB may be the most comfortable area for me right now. Being right footed, playing the left allows me to control my passes better across the field.

I sound like I know what I'm talking about, but @Timpgoose will see soon enough what kinda of buster his PL Commish is haha.

Hopefully it's not too bad, it would suck for something like that to put you back. I was around 30ish and I pulled my calf muscle very very bad (my longest injury that got me off the pitch for about a month I think). Before that day, I'd be late and rush to the game and jump in and start playing. Young and restless hedache you know, since then I'm stretching 95% of the time. It is very very important to stretch at our age. You might already know this but just take it as a reminder if you didn't stretch today.

you've actually inspired me. a lot of my friends at work play, and even though they root for mexico it's still worth a try since none of them will join a softball team. i'm not going to play though until atleast october when temps drop below 100. anyways yesterday i bought a ball to kick around the house, and it was perfect for me to kill the time until my german sheperd snatched it up and fanged it into oblivion. i'll get another or two tomorrow and he will give me good practice in the comfort of my own home.

This. I'm only 22 and pulled my quad 2 years ago. If I don't stretch before I do anything remotely athletic I can still feel it start to knot up and almost pull again. Before that I was like hedache and would just show up and start playing without worrying about stretching at all. Now if I so much as jump out of bed wrong I can feel my quad start to tighten up and feel like it could pull again at any moment.

I met at Timpegoose today at pick up soccer. Seems like a good dude. This old man repulled his left thigh AND had my back go out within 45 mins. Terrible. I guess 90 degrees and only drinking beer and wine over the last weekend left my dehydrated enough to pull everything.

Anyway, timpe was on the other team and he clearly has some skills. Hopefully I can hang longer next time and we can get on the same team.

I would love to start playing. I have a cousin and her husband who have been playing for years, which is pretty intimidating. But other than those two, I really don't have other people interested in the sport to play with. =/

Yeah definitetly, it was a lot of fun. Our TFL commish is a good guy for sure. I didn't stay a whole lot longer either. A mixture of the heat and the game turning into a cluster in the middle with very little passing ended the night for me. You're definitely not bad for only playing what 3 times now? I've seen much worse out of guys who have played for years lol. The fact that you understand possession is more than quite a few people can say, and the foot skills will come around as you play more.
