Instant Classic!Tar Heels Upset #3 Virginia Tech in One for the Ages The North Carolina defense was able to keep the Hokies out of the end zone, and survived a late rally to punch their ticket to the Orange Bowl. QB Bryn Renner had a solid day throwing for 209 yards and 2 TDs, and HB Giovani Bernard added 92 yards and a TD of his own. Trailing by 2 with just 30 seconds left in the 1st half after Virginia Tech's third field goal, the Heels came roaring back to take a 14 - 9 lead into halftime after a spectacular touchdown grab by WR Jheranie Boyd. Midway through the 3rd, North Carolina had opened the lead to 12 points after a 6-yard TD catch by WR Erik Highsmith. The Hokies managed to penetrate the red zone several, but never could punch it in for 6 and had settle for 5 field goals. Virginia Tech pulled to within 6 with just over 4 minutes remaining, but the Tar Heels were able to melt the clock down to under 2 minutes and the Hokies started their last possession from their own 8 yard line. To his credit, QB Logan Thomas was able to nearly drive the length of the field but CB Jabari Price picked off the game-winning touchdown as time expired.
