    PROMOTION/RELEGATION UPDATE

    Halfway through the Serie A schedule, there are tight races going on at all ends of the table. At the top, eight teams are separated by just 9 points. Leaders CSKA Moscow have 25 pts, while Hamburger SV (24) and Palermo (23) are hot on the trail.

    At the other end of the Serie A table, the relegation battle is heating up. Everton (0) are yet to receive a point in the standings, and look a lock to be relegated. Genoa (6) are in the second drop spot, with Santos FC (7) in the dreaded relegation playoff position. VfL Wolfsburg (12) need to be careful not to let Santos creep up on them. FC Schalke 04 (16) seem to be safe, for now.

    It is still early in the Serie B schedule, but already four promotion favorites have emerged. Bordeaux (11 pts) lead the league and control the only automatic promotion spot. The Frenchmen should be wary of the competition however, with three teams just 2 points back. Athletic Club (10) and Fulham (10) would do battle in the promotion playoff, while I. Porto Alegre (9) would be the odd-man out.

    At the bottom of the table, Sporting CP (3), Rangers (2), Werder Bremen (1) and Sampdoria (1) will look to rebuild and contend for promotion next season.

    IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY:
    Automatic Promotion: Bordeaux
    Promotion Playoff: Athletic Club vs Fulham
    Relegation Playoff: Santos FC vs Athletic Club/Fulham loser
    Relegation: Genoa, Everton

    PROMOTION/RELEGATION UPDATE 2

    With a few Serie A teams losing managers, the relegation battle has lost a lot of heat. Everton, who were already virtually assured a downgrade, will now automatically be relegated. Napoli, on the other hand, were looking like title contenders to start the season, but without a manager, they too will be sent down at the end of the season. That leaves only the dreaded Pro/Rel Playoff spot up for grabs. At the moment Santos FC reside in 10th place, but it would be 11th place Genoa that would play for their Serie A lives at the end of the season by virtue of Napoli's departure.

    In Serie B, Athletic Club have a solid hold on 1st place and automatic promotion, 3 points up and a game in hand over Fulham. Bordeaux are 3rd with 2 games in hand. I. Porto Alegre, along with new managers at Fenerbahce and Sporting CP, will be hoping to crack the Serie B top 3 for a ticket to the top flight.

    IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY:
    * - vacated team
    Automatic Promotion: Athletic Club, Fulham
    Automatic Relegation: Napoli*, Everton*
    Pro/Rel Playoff: Genoa vs Bordeaux
