    SERIE A UPDATE
    4.22.11

    The biggest news of the past few weeks in Serie A was the news that Everton have been banned from the league after a match-fixing scandal. The Toffees did not register a single point in 11 games, and were subsequently found to be fixing games to influence betting lines. Everton will be relegated at the end of the season, but the relegation battle is only beginning to heat up. Genoa and Santos FC are separated by just 2 points in the standings, while VfL Wolfsburg are dangerously close to the dreaded relegation playoff spot.

    At the other end of the table, the title race is as tight as ever, with 4 teams with legitimate title dreams, and 4 more hot on the trail. Hamburger SV have hit a fine run of form, picking up all 15 points in their last 5 games to leapfrog CSKA Moscow, who were shockingly dumped from the TFL Cup, at the top of the table. Not far behind are Palermo and LOSC Lille. The French club are 3 points clear of 5th place Udinese, who lead the trailing pack of teams that includes Bursaspor, FC Schalke 04, and Napoli.

    Seydou Doumbia (CSKA) leads all scorers with 13 goals on the year. Klaas-Jan Huntelaar (SCH) and Mladen Petric (HSV) are not far behind with 11 goals each. Salvatore Sirigu (PAL) leads the league with 7 clean sheets.

    1. Hamburger SV (13 GP / 30 pts)
    2. CSKA Moscow (12 / 28)
    3. Palermo (13 / 26)
    4. LOSC Lille (13 / 25)
    5. Udinese (12 / 22)
    6. Bursaspor (11 / 20)
    7. FC Schalke 04 (13 / 18)
    8. Napoli (13 / 17)
    9. VfL Wolfsburg (13 / 12)
    ^10. Santos FC (13 / 9)
    *11. Genoa (13 / 7)
    *12. Everton (11 / 0)

    ^ - relegation playoff
    * - automatic relegation
