Huskies and Rockets Go to Double OT War

You often hear the saying "records don't matter in rivalry games", and if you ever need proof watch a recording of this throwdown. In came 5-3 Northern Illinois- off to a solid start for a MAC school, and sitting at a respectable 3-1 in conference play with their lone loss to upstart Western Michigan. On the opposite sideline sat the hometeam Toledo Rockets, who were flying high at 8-0 (4-0) and ranked #7 in the country. This was no David vs Goliath, everyone knew this was going to be a great game.

The first quarter saw the two defenses settle in quickly, as both teams were held scoreless. Early in the second quarter, however, Toledo QB T Owens would cap off a phenomenal drive with a 1 yard score off a 5WR QB run. Owens' legs were instrumental in this game, breaking a handful of runs when passing plays broke down and being the savior on multiple drives. Toledo would get the ball back later in the quarter, and was in field goal range until Owens made a crucial error on third down in getting flagged for intentional grounding-- knocking the Rockets out of field goal range. Neither team would get any more points before hitting halftime.

NIU kicked off to the Rockets to start the second half, and the defense was able to get a stop. On the ensuing drive, Huskie tailback Jasmin Hopkins would take a handoff 58 yards around the edge on a sweep play from shotgun and scurry in for the score. Everybody in the stadium saw a light flicker on underneath the NIU sideline, and the war was on.

Both teams would duke out the rest of the third quarter with no more scoring occurring, but NIU would finish the quarter on a solid drive which would be capped off on the first play of the fourth quarter with a 13 yard catch and run by Hopkins on a screen play. Both defenses locked in; NIU defense knowing they had a win just on the horizon, and the Toledo defense knowing another score surrendered could mean defeat. With about 3 minutes to go, All-MAC receiver E Page would give the Rockets great field position after a nice punt return. Owens directed a masterful drive which was capped by another short run for the score by himself. NIU was in it for the fight though, and geared up for the go ahead drive. Chandler Harnish was on the mark- leading the offense down the field making great decisions in the read option game. With about a minute left, Akeem Daniels would take another sweep handoff from the shotgun, and scamper 25 yards for the go ahead score.

The home crowd was stunned; many Rocket fans headed for the exit.

In stepped Owens, looking cooler then the other side of the pillow. The dual threat made play after play- throwing, scrambling, anything it took to keep the offense going. With 5 seconds left the Rockets had time for one more play from 16 yards out. Owens took the shotgun snap, and slung a pass to D Noble for the tieing score!

Off to the first overtime we went, with NIU getting the ball first. The Huskies hammered the ball on the ground, capping off a powerful drive with a 3 yard touchdown run by Akeem Daniels. Toledo would be reared and ready to go, and got down to first and goal in no time. Before you could blink however, they were in another crucial 4th down from a few inches out. A pass play was called, and Owens waited...and waited... and waited.. and waited- nothing. In came a NIU defensive lineman, but Owens was not to be tackled- he shook it and found his way into the endzone.

Double OT we went, with the Rockets going first. This time, though, the NIU defense was sharp as a razor, and got into a nice 3rd and 10+ after a well defended screen play. Owens dropped back, but made his one mistake of the day. The ball was picked off by S Evans. NIU would play it safe, running the ball up the middle before ending up a few yards out. Finally, Kasper sent on the field goal team- and they delivered.

31-28.. Huskies register the upset- making sure no MAC team plays for the BCS title this year. Holy shit Kapono .. that was absolutely nuts. Like I said, I didn't want to try that field goal too early because my hands were shaking.

I have a good idea.. BPHusker has done it a few times though. I dont think I will have a strong enough internet to play a user game and broadcast it live-- but I would like to record them probably.

Could do like an ESPN style highlight if the game

I was thinking about doing something like that as well. I was thinking if people could record their games, they could cut out their big plays and we could do some sort of "TOP 10(5)" or "NOT TOP 10(5)" video every 2-3 weeks.

This is what I use for my capture device. It's really easy to use.

I use this software (Sony Vegas Studio 11 Production) to do the editing.

They have a cheaper version that doesn't have the extra features.

I would, but I suck at Photoshop. Maybe I'll ask my buddy to make one. :D

Someone with video editing skills could take on that responsibility-- would be greatly appreciated; it starts with us recording our games/posting highlights though.

    *looks at BP*
