SMU pulls out another improbable victory For the second time this season Coach Applegate's decision making almost lost SMU the game, and for the second time a FG as time expired gave SMU the win. With 1:31 to go in the 4th and winning by 3, SMU faced a 3rd and 1. Coach Applegate could have chosen to run the ball, maybe get the first down, but for sure force UCF to use their last timeout. Instead SMU came out in a 5 WR set, threw an incomplete pass and was forced to kick a FG to go up 6. UCF promptly drove all the way down the field and scored a TD with 36 seconds to go to take a 1 point lead. Garrett Gilbert wasn't fazed however as he threw one 40 yard streak then another 15 yard slant to give the SMU kicker the chance to win the game with a 40 yard field goal.
