North Carolina Emerges from a Pedestrian First Half, Wins 35-16
For one half, the new and improved North Carolina offense was stifled by the Rutgers Scarlet Knights. Shaun Draughn put the Tar Heels up 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, but that would be their only score for the first half. With their offense struggling, the defense stepped up big time and held Rutgers to two field goals despite them knocking on the doors of the UNC endzone.
Rutgers would eventually jump to a 9-6 lead in the third quarter, but North Carolina finally awoke from their offensive slumber. QB Renner found TE Zach Pianalto for a 22yard score to give UNC a 13-9 advantage heading into the 4th quarter. Shaun Draughn would score on another TD run followed by a Greg Little TD catch, extending the lead to 27-9. Rutgers made one last attempt and cut the score to 27-16, but Draughn would rush for his 3rd TD of the day and closing the doors on a Rutgers comeback.
The defense, which has been so stout all season, was a big reason for the victory. "We really struggled moving the ball early, so our defense knew it was up to them to keep us in the game," said coach Nguyen. "You're not going to find a better group in the country, I promise you that."
