Vanderbilt's Defense picks up "the General's" slack Nashville AP; A week after gathering up all the praise that a program can throw at the freshman QB Patton Robinette , he simply ...... looked like a freshman. The Vandy 'D' picked up the slack for a 49-28 win over the UAB blazers on Saturday afternoon despite only one TD toss from the "future" of Vandy football. UAB must of watched a lot of video on Patton and countered his strengths from last week with a bunch of different looks in the secondary. Coach Third said that Patton adjusted very well and learned to take what the defense gives you, with UAB almost daring the freshman to tuck and run the football. That is exactly what the kid did, adjusting to the game and mastering the read option for 67 yards rushing and spreading the defenders out enough to open up the run game for senior running back Wesley Tate who punched in two TDs for a second week in a row with a strong showing. The team is really putting the young QB on their back, when he struggles the defense, running game, and special teams seem to take control. The D had three pick offs , one of them resulting in a TD and special teams took a kickoff back for 6. Senior DE Walker May has been a magnet to the QB so far this year while breaking a Vandy single game sack record last week and not disappointing anyone this week with a couple more sacks to add to the collection. Coach Third said after the game "its good to see balance in our football team, because you cant rely on just one aspect of the game to get wins. When we fall short in one area we seem to pick it up in another area. That is a team gentleman." Vandy now sits at 3-2 on the season.
#7 VS #11
ATHENS- In a huge early season showdown amongst ranked SEC teams, The LSU Tigers came between the hedges and tried to keep their current winning streak in tack. The Bulldogs had other plans and needed a win to stay in contention for the SEC East crown and to also break back into the Top 10. Both defenses would be stingy early and often as LSU's rush defense was on point all game long. They held GA's HB Todd Gurley to a season low 50yds rushing. However, GA's Mr. Football came through when it counted the most. QB Aaron Murray completed 21 of his 29 passing attempts for 270yds and 1 score while he managed to stay out of the turnover column. The defense also kept The Tigers at bay; forcing 2 ints one of which sealed the deal late in the fourth quarter. The win gives Georgia a 3-1(2-0) season record. Next up, I have no idea!
Final Score: 23-13 for the home team
Clemson Survives at WakeThe Clemson Tigers took a smack right on the chin in the very first quarter as Taj Boyd went out of the game with an injury. The Demon Deacons shot out to a 14-0 lead behind the arms and legs of Wake QB Tanner Price. The Tigers seemed shell shocked. But in came third string freshman QB Chad Kelly. And just like in Remember the Titans, when Petey got hurt. Chad Kelly acted like Sunshine and came in and said. Guys, don't worry, I got this. Boy did he ever. Kelly rushed for a TD and threw for two TD's one to Watkins and one to Cherone Peake that propelled the Tigers to victory. Rodereick McDowell was solid on the ground gaining 80 yds for the Tigers as well. Clemson prevails 35-28.
