Hawkeyes squeak out a nail biter in Syracuse
The Iowa football program had a couple firsts this week. They made their debut in the Top 25 poll as the #24 team in the country. More importantly they took to the road for the first time this season to take on the Syracuse Orange.
In a game that was close from start to finish it was the Hawkeyes who held the 31-29 lead when the clock struck 0:00.
Both teams QB's put on a very efficient showing and leading their teams on numerous lengthy drives. Iowa QB Jared Rudock went 15/19 for 258 yards 3TD and 1INT. While Syracuse was led by D. Allen's 22/29 for 372 yards 2TD and 1INT.
The first quarter started slow as each team managed a FG on their opening drive. And after allowing a 2nd FG to Syracuse to go down 6-3, J. Rudock found an open WR Cotton on a short comeback but he was able to race his way 69 yards into the endzone and give Iowa the 10-6 lead. Following yet another FG from Syracuse Iowa was again able to march down the field with a mix of run and pass leading to a 16 TD pass from Rudock to WR K. Martin-Manley. With that score the Hawkeyes would take a 17-9 lead into the locker room.
The third quarter started with a clock killing drive by the Hawkeyes who again were able to find this endzone, this time on a 9 yard pass from Rudock to WR J. Hillyer. But just a few plays later Syracuse QB Allen found a wide open WR streaking down the right sideline, hitting WR J. West in stride he was able to haul in the 61 yard TD completion.
For his second TD of the day Hawkeye WR J. Hillyer wouldn't catch a score, but rather run it in on a sweep play, putting Iowa back up by 15 31-16.
The fourth quarter was owned by the Orange as they pulled within 8points following a 25 yard TD pass form Allen to TE B. Wales. And on their next possession they would punch it in on a 1 yard TD run from HB J. Smith. However, the 2 point conversion attempt failed leaving the Orange to try for an onside kick.
The attmpt would suceed but the offenes was unable to capitalize and the Hawkeyes successfully ran out the clock.
Iowa now improves to 3-0 on the young season with a home game coming up next week vs. Baylor.

    Nebraska 35 Georgia Tech 20
At the end of the first half this game looked like it was going to be a battle to the end, but in the second half the Nebraska Cornhuskers took control on both offense and defense and made sure that this game didn't come down to the last drive. Starting QB Martinez had yet another solid performance by completing 10/11 for 186 yards, 2 TD, and no interceptions. Backup runningback Terrence Newby also had a great game with 100 yards rushing on 6 carries with 2 touchdowns. The Nebraska defense was fantabulous against one of the best running attacks in the country by only giving up 102 yards on the ground on 34 attempts. Though they did give up 220 passing yards, they made sure that when it was caught that they wrapped up and brought the ball carrier down and made sure to tighten up in the red zone giving up no passing touchdowns and also coming up with an interception late in the 4th. This win brings Nebraska to 3-0 with a chance to sneak into the top 10.

What appeared to be a blowout in the Miami v. Penn State game turned out to be a last play in the fourth quarter to decide the game. Miami had full control entering the second half with over a 100 yards rushing and a 21-7 lead. However, with Penn State only letting Miami score 3 points in the 4th quarter, it was Lions' offense that strung together 2 TD drives. Of course the second drive had to come down the last minute of the game as a game winning TD was thrown on the 2 yard line with only 0:11 seconds left. Lions move on 2-0 on the season.

    Clemson beats UNC 38-7

Clemson opened the game with a 60 yard return, however UNC's defense forced a three and out and a punt. Next possession, Clemson got on the board early with a 77 yard TD pass from Tahj Boyd to Sammy Watkins to go up 7-0. UNC had a tough time of things in the first half as they were held scoreless in the half. Clemson's next possesion stalled in the redzone and they settled for a FG. Next possession they came out in a hurry up offense which lead to an easy 7. The score was 17-0 at the half. UNC came out strong and scored a TD on their first possession of the 2nd half to make it 17-7. Feeling unfazed, Clemson matched with a TD of their own on the next possession to push it back to 24-7 and from there it was all over. Clemson rolled over UNC threw the air and ground in route to an easy victory.
