Hawkeyes squeak out a nail biter in Syracuse The Iowa football program had a couple firsts this week. They made their debut in the Top 25 poll as the #24 team in the country. More importantly they took to the road for the first time this season to take on the Syracuse Orange. In a game that was close from start to finish it was the Hawkeyes who held the 31-29 lead when the clock struck 0:00. Both teams QB's put on a very efficient showing and leading their teams on numerous lengthy drives. Iowa QB Jared Rudock went 15/19 for 258 yards 3TD and 1INT. While Syracuse was led by D. Allen's 22/29 for 372 yards 2TD and 1INT. The first quarter started slow as each team managed a FG on their opening drive. And after allowing a 2nd FG to Syracuse to go down 6-3, J. Rudock found an open WR Cotton on a short comeback but he was able to race his way 69 yards into the endzone and give Iowa the 10-6 lead. Following yet another FG from Syracuse Iowa was again able to march down the field with a mix of run and pass leading to a 16 TD pass from Rudock to WR K. Martin-Manley. With that score the Hawkeyes would take a 17-9 lead into the locker room. The third quarter started with a clock killing drive by the Hawkeyes who again were able to find this endzone, this time on a 9 yard pass from Rudock to WR J. Hillyer. But just a few plays later Syracuse QB Allen found a wide open WR streaking down the right sideline, hitting WR J. West in stride he was able to haul in the 61 yard TD completion. For his second TD of the day Hawkeye WR J. Hillyer wouldn't catch a score, but rather run it in on a sweep play, putting Iowa back up by 15 31-16.The fourth quarter was owned by the Orange as they pulled within 8points following a 25 yard TD pass form Allen to TE B. Wales. And on their next possession they would punch it in on a 1 yard TD run from HB J. Smith. However, the 2 point conversion attempt failed leaving the Orange to try for an onside kick. The attmpt would suceed but the offenes was unable to capitalize and the Hawkeyes successfully ran out the clock. Iowa now improves to 3-0 on the young season with a home game coming up next week vs. Baylor. GG Brandon S.
