Colombian Double Sends Cagliari into Coppa Final

On a wet and dreary day in Southern Italy Cagliari would do just enough to get into the coppa final in this all Italian affair. Both teams came into the game on the defensive and the 1st half was full of half chances spurned by the defense. 71 minutes in, Avelar would find some space down the left and whip in a ball for Ibarbo to head in to give the home crowd something to cheer about. Udinese would respond well, and 9 minutes later Di Natale would latch onto a brilliant through ball by Muriel before firing it below the hapless Avramov in goal to level it at 1-1. With 3 minutes to go, Ibarbo would take the ball from the right wing, cut inside, juke past a defender, and rifle in an unstoppable shot near-side giving Brkic no chance and handing Cagliari a berth in the final. Said Ibarbo after the game "I just wanted to show my international manager what I was capable of tonight" as he cheekily grinned towards the camera and walked away.

PSV Eindhoven were crowned TFS Coppa Confederazione champions with a convincing 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao. It was one-way traffic in the first half, as PSV controlled possession and took the majority of chances. The visitors struck first in the 26' when M. Depay found some space, turned, and fired a low shot past the diving keeper for the opening goal. Eindhoven were content to go into the half with the lead, but knew that Bilbao would come out looking for an equalizer in the second half.

Athletic Bilbao opened the second half with a dangerous chance that I. Muniain put wide. Moments later, J.S. Park broke in on goal, but his near-post effort was indeed too near to the post. In the 60', GK Iraizoz made a splendid save on a J. Willems long-range shot, but on the resulting corner J. Bruma headed in an insurance goal for Eindhoven.

With a 2-goal lead, PSV Eindhoven began to drop into a defensive shape, but that did not last long, as Athletic Bilbao won a corner and scored through Iturraspe to pull back a goal. It was a nervy final 20 minutes for Eindhoven as they tried desperately to maintain their lead. B. Ruiz did a magnificent job shielding the ball at the corner flag, and sensing an opening, sent in a hopeful cross that was met spectacularly by J. Locadia with a bicycle kick to put the result beyond doubt.

    Highlights to follow...
