It was a defensive match up at St. James Park as Queens Park Rangers came in with hopes of glory. Newcastle's defense was up to par today as they helped seasoned keeper Tim Krul keep QPR scoreless despite attempts from the wing. Both teams had their chances, however the play of Tim Krul lifted Newcastle to a nil nil tie. The attack was led by Remy Cabella who had his chances, however the young CAM couldn't find the back of the net even with multiple shots that seemed sure fire goals. The Toon Army supporters were on the edge of their seats as Striker Papiss Cissé ripped a shot that had upper 90 written all over it only to find the dreaded cross bar. Coach Donmoyer could been seen on the side lines in what seemed to be best described as a frantic state. After the match was through Donmoyer had much to say "I felt our boys were good out there for our first match in the new season. Our defense stepped in a big way today to protect our scoreless tie. I thought our attackers really made some good shots out there, but at the end of the day they were just a tad off."

Tight game throughout. Hannover's keeper was able to keep the game close and allow the 96'ers to pull one out of their ass. Great game all around!

West Ham's first win was nearly spoiled by a foul in the box by Song, however the PSV penalty shot would sail over the crossbar to help preserve the inaugural win for new manager Kasper. Enner Valencia got the Hammers their first goal, and Sakho finished a breakaway to put the final hammer into the coffin.

Good game CTfromDC - I thought I was in for a tide change after that penalty.

With this being Qpr's first home game of the season the players were out to prove a point after a disappointing draw in their season opener, the first half was a cagey affair with both teams having chances to score but neither able to capitalise on them. Qpr player Sandro was subbed for the often controversial J. Barton the 41st minute, Lille having the better of the possession at the end of the first.

Half time substation for Qpr seen S. Wright-Phillips replaced by C. Austin.

The second half was all Qpr with some good build up play, Charlie Austin was through on goal only for the keeper to stand big and make the save, in the resulting corner Fer managed to out jump his defender and nod home Qpr's first goal of the season. Shortly after Phillips broke past the Lille left back and drove the ball across the box straight to Mutch who couldn't convert the chance and hit the post, Lille put on the pressure at the end but Qpr were able to stand strong and keep the clean sheet.

GG Andanas thought Fer was a cert for a yellow card but the ref must've been lenient :)

In the future, please note who the scorer was and from whom the assist came in the stats above. While I enjoy reading the narrative, I don't want to have to comb through them to determine who the scorers were in the matches.

    Grassy ass!

St. James Park will surly be rocking tonight as Newcastle United walks away with their first victory in Series C. Udinese came out with hopes of a victory and their efforts wouldn't be ignored. As soon as the whistle blew Udinese came out hot looking to slow down and force the Newcastle players to take their attempts from outside the 18. Newcastle happily obliged to these attempts in the first half as many attempts were valid, however off target non the less. At half Donmoyer explained to his boys "Slow the game down, make passes. As you make these passes lads you will see openings for shots. I expect to see at least 5 passes before you shoot the ball. Create space and rip it!" The advice seemed to work well as the second half came about and Newcastle had many opportunities. In the 69' min Perez seemed to get a lucky pick from fellow team mate Tiote that gave him enough time to take the shot and he succeeded giving Toon Army a reason to cheer. Moments later in the 74' Min Sissoko was fed a masterful pass started by Toon Army favorite Remy Cabella. Sissoko made two stellar ball moves to create enough space to rip the ball up over the Udinese keeper to seal the Newcastle victory 2-0. Donmoyer was seen on the sideline in all smiles as he really was proud of his teams attempt on the day.

The match started off with a slow pace as both sides met for the first time and tried to feel each other out. However, in the 29', Maicon made a beautiful run down the left sideline and sent in a low cross to N'Doye who finished with a diving header in the corner of the net. 6 minutes later, M. Fernandes sent in a long shot that ricocheted off the post resulting in a scramble in front of the net that ended with N'Doye finding the back of the net for the second time of the match.

The next 40 minutes played out similarly as Lokomotiv had opportunity after opportunity to add to their lead but was never able to finish. Crystal Palace turned up the pressure as they attempted shot after shot, cross after cross, but were never able to find the back of the net as Guilherme made every save necessary to preserve the clean sheet.

A touch of class from Yura Movsisyan spared Spartak Moscow embarrassment at home against Queens Park Rangers, earning a 1-1 draw.

Manager Jocko was facing his former team for the first time since abruptly departing Loftus Road in December. Charlie Austin put QPR ahead in the 19th minute, finding space in the middle of the box to thump home a corner kick.

From there it was an often-sloppy affair with both teams wasteful in possession.

Spartak managed 56 percent of possession, but consistently failed to connect on the final pass that could set up a chance. QPR was content to soak up pressure and hit back on the counter several times.

Spartak's sole chance on goal came in the second half after a solid piece of hold up play from Artem Dzyuba. Dzyuba then turned and found strike partner Movsisyan at the corner of the box. Movsisyan avoided three defenders and scored far post to level the match.

"This is not the result we were looking for," Jocko said in dressing room. "I thought we played our game, but all credit to QPR. They created some chances and kept us from getting that last touch when we needed it."

Roman Shirokov converted an early penalty and Yura Movsisyan and Artem Dzyuba connected for some second half insurance, as Spartak Moscow defeated Udinese 2-0 to earn their first Serie C win of the season.

Alberto Costa led a bright start for Spartak, cutting in from the left wing and driving toward goal. Costa was free on the keeper when he was dragged down from behind for a clear penalty.

Shirokov stepped up and hit a well-placed shot to the upper right corner and a 1-0 lead.

Spartak manager Jocko and Udinese manage Lions67 are well-acquainted Serie C foes, the two having squared off several times last season and during friendlies. The familiarity showed, as both teams played as if they had been well-prepared for what to expect.

Udinese tackled well in the midfield and striker Antonio Di Natale forced Spartak keeper Artyom Rebrov into two fine saves. But Di Natale and Udinese couldn't finish despite several excellent chances.

They paid the price in the 60th minute. Movsisyan collected near midfield and sent a perfectly weighted lob toward Dzyuba. The big striker controlled, worked a good angle and rolled a soft shot into the lower right corner.

Spartak's Jocko was happy with the win, but said his team was still not in top form.

"We need to take more chances," Jocko said. "I like our patience, but we need to start challenging keepers more."

Udinese manager Lions67 couldn't hide his disappointment after the match.

"This was not our best effort," he said. "The boys and I had an off day."

Edgar Calderon - Di Natale and Widmer play for Udinese. I assume you just forgot to change the name from your earlier West Ham match and this was, in fact, your match against Lions67 and Udinese?
