The cups archive has been updated (just missing S14 Supercoppa data) and Coppa awards have been announced.

The Coppa draw for Season 15 will be Monday, December 29 @ 10 PM ET. More details about the draw will be announced soon.

    Couple things i noticed:

    1. Team record for most points & most wins in group stage: think i tied both this past season.
    2. Individual record for most assists in TSO-P Cup for Gignac ; not sure if it's supposed to be me or Hokie (guessing it's me).

Zikry noted in our GroupMe chat "Shiftee always gets the gift draws. I can't remember him ever being in group of death." Zikry wasn't the only one to wonder aloud, so does shiftee really always get the gift draws? Well.....

Let's start with the Gorup of Life. Over the 12-season history of the Coppa (it began in Season 3), shiftee has been placed into the voted upon "Group of Life" 3 times. 3 others have matched that- RedAL925, pitt4life21, and Frenchie1916 (who's actually been in it 4 times). And with the group this season containing shiftee and pitt4life21 taking the early lead in the polls, the two of them look set to tie Frenchie's mark. But also of note- neither pitt4life21 or Frenchie1916 have ever been in the top pot, ultimately meaning they tend to be among the lower-ranked teams in their group. shiftee has always been a Pot 1 team, so should his group win the Group of Life poll this season, it can be said that shiftee does in fact get the easiest draws.

Also of note- when shiftee was placed into the Group of Life in Season 9, his 5-team group was quickly dubbed "Shiftee's Slaughterhouse" (originally titled by Zikry too!). Ironically however, that actually proved to be one of shiftee's toughest groups to date. While he still finished first in the group despite being tied in points with the second-placed team, he failed to win 2 of his 4 group games- significant considering he has won 31 of his 36 group games overall!

As for the "Group of Death," shiftee has been in it once: Season 13, the somewhat "asterisked" season as TFS only had 17 clubs in the Coppa during its rough final season on the PS3. It was a tough group still though and contained 5 teams (and remains the only time shiftee did not win his group, as he placed 2nd). But aside from that one season, shiftee's groups have never received more than 2 votes in the Group of Death voting (and 9/12 times it has been 0 or 1). And while we're at it, it certainly doesn't come close to the bad luck that vipermansa has gotten (4 Groups of Death!), while RedAL925, Zikry, and Friz have all been in it 3 times each.

And lastly, why does it appear that Zikry, the "Coppa King," is so concerned about shiftee getting the easy draws? Well perhaps he's just feeling a little left out- in 12 and soon to be 13 seasons, Zikry has never been drawn into a Group of Life.

Already a pair of spots clinched this early in the group stage! In Group D where everyone has completed their first 2 matches, CxMacx10 has clinched 1st and Lions67 has clinched 4th- yet both still have something to play for when they meet next week, as their standing against similarly ranked teams will determine where exactly they fall in the knockout brackets.

And that also means the match next week between redwings8831 and Lou has a lot riding on it- winner advances, yet a draw would also be enough for redwings8831 to claim 2nd place.

Maybe should be a stream of the week since it has so much riding on it already!

Some of you have already clinched your spot within your group even with a game still to play. However, that game isn't meaningless. Remember, with 9 groups....

-the top 8 group winners will receive a home match in the knockout stage (i.e. will be the "seeded" teams)
-the lowest-ranked group winner and the top 5 runner-ups will be placed into the Round of 16 and will play a "seeded" team
-the 4 lowest-ranked runner-ups will have to play in a Preliminary Round match, with the winner of those matches advancing to the Round of 16 to face a "seeded" team

So all the 1st-placed teams will be ranked by PTS > GD > GF, then we'll do the same for 2nd-place teams, 3rd, and 4th (Coppa Confederazione follows same format, but with 3rd & 4th-placed teams).

couple of notes with wSeals9 joining TFS...

Andanas For the TSO-Premier Open Cup, wSeals9 will be using his new TFS team, SC Braga, since he has yet to play any games there (instead of Feyenoord, which he chose when he joined the Open Cup). And while technically he'd no longer qualify for the Open Cup as he is in TFS but not a premier member, he did qualify for the tournament originally, so he'll continue to participate in the Cup this season.

IJGator Akshat Singhal HokieNYC For the Coppa, Billy's 1 game played will be wiped out and wSeals9 will enter Group A on a clean slate. All 3 group stage games are open and must be completed before the knockout stage draw on Wednesday night, January 28.

with MiaFLSurf stepping down, couple notes on the Cups...

For the Coppa, all of Surf's group stage games in Group H will be cancelled and his group will act as a 3-team group. Since those 3 have all played each other, that means RedAL925 will place first, Jugster second, and Calhockey10 third.

hokie79 and Malaga will receive a 3-0 forfeit win over Surf in the TSO-Premier Open Cup.

Well, looks like we have a Coppa first on our hands! Let's take a look at Group A:

As you can see, IJGator and Akshat Singhal appeared to be tied. So how will they be split up, especially with 2nd advancing to the Coppa Tradizione and 3rd dropping down into the Coppa Confederazione? Well, following the tiebreak procedures since they are tied in points....

    Tiebreakers
    1. Greatest number of points in matches among tied teams (both have 1, as they played to a draw)
    2. Greatest goal difference in matches among tied teams (both have +0, due to draw)
    3. Greatest number of goals scored in matches among tied teams (both have 1, as match finished 1-1 between them)
    4. Greatest goal difference in all group matches (both have +0, as seen in the table above)
    5. Greatest number of goals scored in all group matches (both have 4, as seen in the table above)

So now what do we do? Well, we conduct a blind draw to determine who advances!!!..... just kidding, this isn't the MLS. So continuing on to the last step in the tiebreak procedure:

6a. (If two teams remained tied) One match playoff with extra time and penalties if needed at the home of whoever was away in the corresponding group match

So that means we'll have our first-ever Coppa group stage tiebreaker match, with Lokomotiv Moscow hosting Ajax. And then should they play to another draw (and us no longer being able to use ET/pens), they'd have to play under the "Golden Goal Match" structure to replicate sudden death. So Akshat Singhal and IJGator, go ahead and begin scheduling this match (just use the Coppa Matchday 3 threads)!

Coppa knockout stage draw will be Wednesday night at 11 PM ET. For those still with unplayed games, they will go down as cancelled if they remain unplayed by then.

    Few notes for the Coppa:
    • after disccusing with the two managers, Frenchie1916 will advance via forfeit over Lions67. Frenchie1916 please schedule your Round of 16 match with vipermansa immediately.
    • UcanHateMeNow will advance via forfeit over IJGator, as IJGator has not responded in the scheduling thread and hasn't been on TSO in over a week, while Ucan will be gone this weekend.
    • besides the viper/frenchie game, the only remaining unplayed Round of 16 match is Caleb Clark vs Edgar Calderon. I'll be setting a hard deadline of Wednesday night for this match, which should allow some time for Caleb to schedule & play this match once he returns from being away this weekend.
    • all Quarterfinal matches will open on Sunday.
