    Niners Hang On
    defeat Arizona 28-21

San Francisco began defense of its NFC Division title by facing division foe Arizona Cardinals in San Francisco.

The Niners opened the game with a touchdown on their opening possession, taking a quick 7-0 lead. After a Michael Vick interception, the Niners would again find the end zone to take a 14-0 lead in the first quarter. The Cardinals would get back into the game in the second quarter on a lengthy drive, culminated by a Vick touchdown run. Late in the half, with San Francisco facing 3rd and 3 from about their own 48 yard line, Colin Kaepernick found Vernon Davis deep for a touchdown to give the Niners a 21-7 lead. On the play, both Cardinal safeties walked towards the line of scrimmage, allowing Kaepernick to recognize Davis one-on-one against the linebacker.

The Niners appeared to have the game in hand midway through the third quarter as Frank Gore broke a run up the middle for 54 yards, giving the Niners a 28-7 lead. However, the comfort would soon wear off as Patrick Peterson took the ensuing kickoff back for a touchdown to cut the lead to 14. The Cardinal defense forced San Francisco to punt multiple times in the second half and would eventually take advantage early in the fourth to close the game to seven. San Francisco, now back in a pressure situation, would commit their only turnover of the game, giving Arizona a change to tie the game late.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, after driving deep into San Francisco territory, they would be turned back, with Vick throwing his third interception of the game on a last-gasp fourth down play. The Niners would convert a 3rd and 1 to seal the game.

gtstang86, Good game. The Peterson return really brought you back. You pretty much dominated from that point on.

Arizona couldn't stop the 49er rushing attack in the first half. SF was dominating the line of scrimmage rattling off 9 yard runs like it was nothing. Vernon Davis burnt AZ big time with the big catch before halftime giving them the a 14 point lead. Peterson's return and Vicks's 28 yard TD run were instrumental in the comeback. But Vick's INT in the red zone on the final drive was the dagger. Terrible play call by the coach.
