Lions Overcome Saints Thanks to Turnovers in Second Half, 36-10
The Lions came into the game needing a W just as much as their opponent, the Saints were sitting with a 6-5 record as well and tight positioning in the NFC wildcard race has made teams bear down early. "Every week is a must win really, we knew that Cory Thomas would have his team prepared and we needed to match their intensity, first half showed that but bad breaks made the score more lopsided than the game really suggests" Coach Westcott said during the press conference.
Westcott was right, the Saints and Lions traded points and possessions most of the first half to a 17-10 lead at halftime at Ford Field. The half was highlighted with a short Leshoure TD run and a Walker Stream TD reception to equal a Sproles TD run and a New Orleans field goal.
Then what turned into a couple of turnovers by the Saints went into utter absurdity!
The Saints received the ball first in the second half and the first play Brees threw a interception to Chris Houston who returned it for a pick 6. The very next play the Saints threw another pick to Patrick Chung, this time the Lions settled for a field goal 27-10.
Then the fumbles hit the Saints with Patrick Chung forcing two fumbles with Detroit fighting a very nasty Saints defense, settling for field goals for the rest of the game. The Coup de grĂ¢ce came at the end of the game when the Lions punted and Sproles waived for a fair catch, only to drop the ball and Alphonso Smith fell on it and Detroit came out in their victory formation.
"We made some plays, sure." Westcott concluded "But the Saints really had a terrible run of misfortune in the second half that would of made me throw my headset."
