    S2 Week 1 Summaries

Wisconsin dominates the new look UNLV Runnin' Rebels, 55-30. The game was not as close as the score. HB John Clay rushed for an astonishing 336 yards and 3 TDs on only 23 attempts. UNLV broke out their new look option offense, but falling behind early, they didn't get to see much of it. They were forced to throw the ball to make the game respectable.

    Hawaii 24 Oregon St. 6.

Hawaii's Defense allowed 2 fg's in the 1st and 2nd Quarter before the Offense woke up paced by Moniz 300+ yrds gm and 3 Td's. Hawaii chewed up most of the playclock in the 2nd Half to Limit OST touches with the ball.

    Next Up Rice.

Even more critical, which I forgot to mention, was that Cal scored a potentially tying TD in the fourth. They went for the two point conversion to try and knot the score at 21-21, but they were DENIED, SDSU had a 21-19 lead going into the clock killing drive.

    Bulldogs come alive
Louisiana Tech thrives with new talent, beats Rice 35-24

After an abysmal 2010 season, the Bulldogs began the 2011 campaign with a solid victory over a potent Rice Owl team. Rice Owl QB Nick Fanuzzi lead the NCAA in passing in 2010, and he looked to be a dominant Quarterback this season. Things would change on the first drive for the Owls, when Fanuzzi was hit. He was down for a minute and the Owl fans in attendance grew very concerned. After going to the sidelines, he was ultimately diagnosed with a broken collarbone and is now out for the season. After Rice had a QB change the dynamics of the game were changed as well. Clinging to a 7-3 lead, LTU made a huge mistake when HB Lennon Creer fumbled the ball. The Owls would take full advantage scoring on a Sam McGuffie touchdown reception. They would take a 10-7 lead, and things began to unravel for the Bulldogs. After a quick three and out, LTU punted and McGuffie rumbled down the sideline. He was (luckily) knocked out of bounds, but it would set up another Rice TD. Tyler Dupree caught a 14 yard pass to make the score 17-7 Rice, with less than 2:00 to go in the half. This would be were the momentum started swinging in the Bulldogs way. After some quick throws to WR Cruz Williams, Tech was set up nicely inside the 20 yard line with less than :30 seconds to go before halftime. QB Colby Cameron would lay a pass in between two Rice Owls and into the arms of WR Carey Fortson. Fortson would take it in for the score with :07 seconds left. 17-14 at the half.

The Second half was back and forth for a while. The Bulldogs received the opening second half kick, but were forced to punt. Rice had to do the same after some big time tackles by Austin Rust (10 on the day). With their second drive of the half, the Bulldogs methodically drove down the field to score the go ahead touchdown. Mixing pass and run was the biggest key to the Bulldogs second half success. HB Tyrone Dupelsis scored on a 14 yard scamper to put LTU up 21-17. On the very next drive, Rice would respond. Scoring on a big time play to WR Donte Moore. Moore would complete the 55 yard reception after breaking a tackle. 24-21 Rice with 2:32 to go in the third quarter. This would be the final time the Owls would reach pay dirt. LTU got the ball again, and made the Rice secondary pay for some blown assignments. And with :05 seconds to go before the final period, Creer avenged his early mistake by scoring a touchdown. 28-24 LTU. On to the fourth we go! In the fourth quarter the Bulldogs played great defense, forcing the Owls to punt in the beginning moments. After the punt, LTU would drive down the field and score to completely lock it up. Creer scored again on a 25 yard run. 35-24 LTU. Rice would throw an interception in the endzone late, and that would seal it for the Bulldogs.

    GG T2...sorry about Fanuzzi..
