#20 Cal 35
#1 Alabama 31
Cal traveled to Tuscaloosa's 4th toughest place to play to face the #1 team in the nation. Bama took an early 14-0 lead following a Cal punt and then a strip sack/scoop and score. After that both offenses were clicking and scoring at will. With a 21-14 lead and < 30s left Bama was looking to increase their lead to 14 when LB Broussard snagged a pass for an INT to end the Bama threat. (This was 1 of 2 INTs in the game after Cal managed only 4 all of last season). Seeking to tie up the game coach Jello brought in backup QB Kline (who passed for nearly 4200 yards last year) for 1 last hail mary. He found WR Treggs streaking down the sideline and hit him in stride for a 56 yard completion as Treggs fell a yard into the end zone. Apparently Mr. Magoo was the side judge as he was called down short of the goal line and Cal took a 7 point deficit into the locker room.
Cal tied it up to start the 2nd half as new QB Harris hit WR Harper on a 63 yard catch and run. After a Bama TD Cal tied it up once again to end the 3rd quarter. Cal made a huge goal line stand to force a Bama FG and then 1 minute later FR David Dennis (who's a QB but listed as a CB this season) ran one in from 17 to give Cal their 1st lead of the game. With 35s left Bama completed a 25 yard corner route in the back corner of the end zone that was clearly out of bounds but Mr. Magoo called it a TD. Thankfully for Cal the guys upstairs (who could probably see from the press box that he was OOB and didn't even need the close up replay) reviewed it and overturned the call, forcing 4th down. Cal jumped the route on 4th down to get their 2nd pick of the day and effectively end the game.
This was a huge upset and a tremendous victory for the Bears. Offensively Cal was breaking in a new QB (and playing @ Bama is not the ideal time for it) an he was brilliant. He was a threat on the ground and was extremely efficient through the air. It was brutal on D as they had to deal with T.J. "Steve Austin" Yeldon all game as he just stiff arm bitch slapped defenders all over the field and brushed off the guys that jump on his back like they were gnats.
Steve Austin in action:
QB Tim Harris 234.2, 14/16 (87%), 201 yds, 2 TD, 0 INT - 15 car, 72 yds (4.8 YPC), 2 TD
WR Bryce Treggs - 6 rec, 121 yds
WR Chris Harper - 4 rec, 84 yds, TD
Rebels quiet The Swamp
#21 Ole Miss - 28
#25 Florida - 16
An early Top 25 matchup was one of the showcase games in the SEC this weekend. The Rebel defense was too tough for the Gators, only allowing one offensive TD and the other came in the opening moments of the game when the KR took one to the house and the PAT would get horribly shanked. Maikail Miller was taking his first start, in The Swamp no less, and did extremely well as he completed the first 14 of his passes before SO WR Treadwell dropped a pass (wide open too) to give Miller his first miss. It took a while to get the Ole Miss ground game going but in the end they scored three times with our fourth score coming when Bryant stepped in front of a pass (pictured above) and took it home. Really liking the Multiple D playbook.
M. Miller - 16/20, 175 yards, 8 Att, -18 yards, 1 Rushing TD
J. Walton - 25 Att, 101 yards, 1 TD
M. Dodson - 6 Att, 16 yards, 1 TD
UCLA hangs on to be a tough UVA team. UVA has a very good and caused UCLA major issues with 2 picks and one fumble. On offense UVA was lead by their QB who would scramble at a blink of an eye for huge gains. But when it came down to crunch time the UCLA D stood tall and forced 2 failed 4th down attempts to end the game. Once again UCLA was hit the injury bug to start the season as their starting HB is out 7weeks.
What You Gonna Do When Big Josey Comes For You???
Two first half interceptions by the new signal calling for Missouri in QB Berkstresser in the rain kept this game closer than it should have been. The buffet clearers on the offensive line had their way with the silly Irish dline and allowed HB Josey to begin his 2014 Heisman campaign where a late injury last year derailed him. He still only lost to Johnny Football by a few votes. The playing conditions were not favorable but ND was able to keep the game close on the afternoon. THe game was 17-10 heading into the 4th quarter and some were a little worried. Missouri was trying to spread the ball around but ND held the Tigers to only 50% 3rd down conversions. THe rushing stats were a little silly and coach Fmode is very disappointed his Tigers only scored 27 points when they rushed for over 300+ yards on the game.
MU RB H. Josey
20 car 255 yds 2 TD
3 rec 11 yds 1 TD
