    UPDATE 1
    As of 11.3.11

    SERIE A

Both Spartak Moscow and Aston Villa have separated themselves from the pack at the top of the Serie A table. Everton and PSV have the games in hand to join the party at the top, but the results must be positive. At the other end, Werder Bremen's recent run of form have pulled them from the depths, but they aren't safe yet. Fulham also look safe for now, although their lead over the relegation battlers is slim. Both Ajax (10 pts, 10 GP) and SC Braga (10, 11) are level on points in 8th place, while Sao Paulo (9, 8) currently occupies the pro/rel playoff spot. Slow starts by FC Schalke 04 (8, 9) and Athletic Club (7, 9) have them destined for automatic relegation.

    SERIE B

It's a 5-team race for promotion in Serie B. At this point, Udinese (23 pts, 10 GP) are tops, but Wolverhampton (21, 8) have games in hand to overtake the Italians. Rubin Kazan (20, 10) Newcastle (18, 10) and Santos (15, 9) are chasing the leaders and will fight it out for the final 2 promotion spots. Corinthians and Anzhi are in the middle of the pack, and will likely stay out of the promotion battle and avoid the drop zone. The relegation battlers are Palermo (3, 8), Bolton (0, 5) and Stoke City (0, 8), with the two English sides favorites to be dropped.

    SERIE C

Another 5-team promotion race in Serie C. Sunderland (16 pts, 7 GP) are a the top, with Olympiakos (15, 6) and FC Koln (15, 7) right behind. Both Hamburger SV (13, 9) and Galatasaray (10, 5) could make a late push for promotion, but they will need a string of wins to do so.

    ------------------------------

    IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY:
    CHAMPIONS: Spartak Moscow

    PROMOTION (to A): Udinese
PROMOTION PLAYOFFS: Wolves vs Rubin Kazan (winner promoted), loser vs Sao Paulo
    PROMOTION (to B): Sunderland, Olympiakos
RELEGATION (to B): Athletic Club, FC Schalke 04
RELEGATION (to C): Bolton, Stoke City

After PSV's slow start, those 3 games in hand for them could see them within a point of top spot...

    UPDATE 2
    As of 11.14.11

    SERIE A
Just 5 points separate 6th from 12th in Serie A. Stade Rennes and Sao Paulo are tied for 6th with 15 points each, and should be safe from the drop zone. Ajax (13 pts, 11 GP) and Werder Bremen (13, 13) are tied for 8th. At this point in the season, FC Schalke 04 (12, 14), having been promoted at the end of last season, occupy the 10th-place pro/rel playoff spot. One point behind are SC Braga (11, 12), who would be dropped if the season ended today. Thankfully for them, it doesn't.

    SERIE B
Wolves (22, 9), Udinese (21, 11) and Corinthians (20, 10) are in pole position to be promoted at season's end. Newcastle (18, 10) and Rubin Kazan (18, 11) are running out of time to make their case for Serie A contention. Santos FC and Anzhi will most likely be staying in Serie B another season, with is good news for those clubs. With Bolton being automatically dropped after financial issues, it's a two-team race for the 8th spot in Serie B. Stoke City (5, 11) have a leg up on Palermo (1, 10), but anything is possible down the stretch.

    SERIE C
FC Koln (31, 13) are running away with the Serie C title, and subsequent promotion. The race for 2nd also seems to be settled, with Sunderland (26, 11) a good deal ahead of 3rd place Hamburger SV (17, 11). Olympiakos (16, 8) are lurking in 4th, and a string of wins could push the Greek side into the promotion picture.

    IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY:
    CHAMPIONS: Spartak Moscow

    UPDATE 3
    As of 11.17.11

    SERIE A
While 4 of the 'Big-5' have taken their place at the top of the Serie A table, one is left to fight the relegation fight. Werder Bremen (16 pts, 16 GP) and Stade Rennes (16, 12) are level on points and tied for 7th place. Ajax (14, 13) are in 9th, one spot ahead of the pro/rel playoff spot, now occupied by FC Schalke 04 (12, 14). SC Braga (11, 14) are currently last on goal differential, but are not to be counted out. Athletic Club (11, 11) have gone into administration and will be automatically relegated.

    SERIE B
What a race for promotion in the second tier we have! As it stands, Wolverhampton (32, 13) have opened a significant gap on the rest of the field, clinging to the automatic promotion that comes with it. The 4 teams below them are separated by only 3 points. Udinese (24, 12) have a 3-point lead on Newcastle (21, 12), Corinthians (21, 11), and Rubin Kazan (21, 13). Anzhi (16, 13) will most likely be staying another season in Serie B, while Santos FC (13, 11) are a good bet to do the same. With Bolton being automatically relegated at the end of the season, the relegation battle comes down to two teams. As it stands now, Stoke City (5, 12) will stay up, while Palermo (1, 11) will move down to Serie C.

    SERIE C
The fight for promotion in the third tier is just about settled. FC Koln (31, 13) and Sunderland (26, 11) are topping the table now, but there is one team lurking that can make a case for promotion. Olympiakos (16, 8) have the games in hand to overtake 2nd place with the right results.

    IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY
    CHAMPIONS: Aston Villa

    PROMOTION (to A): Wolverhampton
PROMOTION PLAYOFFS: Udinese vs Newcastle (winner promoted), loser vs FC Schalke 04
PROMOTION (to B): FC Koln, Sunderland

It has been brought to my attention that relegating Athletic Club to Serie B still leaves an empty team in Serie B (duh). The team finshing 9th in Serie B will be replaced with Athletic Club. Athletic Club will then be relegated to Serie C, while B9th will stay in Serie B. Only two teams from Serie C will be promoted to Serie B. Pro/Rel between Series A and B will not be affected.

So if the season ended today, Palermo would be scheduled to go down, but Athletic Club would take their place and move down instead. Koln and Sunderland would move up to B, while Athletic Club and Bolton would move to C, and be replaced with new managers. Pro/Rel between A and B would stay the same, so Wolves and Udinese/Newcastle winner come up, Braga and Athletic Club go down, and loser of Udinese/Newcastle plays Schalke to stay (SCH win) or go (SCH loss).

I think that all makes sense....

    UPDATE 4
    As of 11.22.11

    SERIE A
Straightforward relegation battle brewing in Serie A. Werder Bremen (19 pts, 17 GP) look to be safe from the drop in 8th place. Ajax (15, 16) and FC Schalke 04 (12, 15) are doing battle for 9th place, while SC Braga (11, 15) need points to crawl out of the basement. Athletic Club, having gone into administration, will be dropped from Serie A.

    SERIE B
While Wolves (32, 13) and Udinese (28, 14) fight for an automatic promotion place, the race for 3rd is on. Newcastle (21, 13) Corinthians (21, 11) and Rubin Kazan (21, 13) are level on points, but the Brazilians have a vital 2 games in hand. It's anyone's guess who will finish 3rd this sesaon. Status quo on the other end of the table, with Stoke City (5, 12) and Palermo (1, 11) trying to stay ahead of one another.

    SERIE C
What was once a seemingly insurmountable lead for FC Koln (34, 15) has turned to marginal, as Sunderland (29, 12) have closed the gap with 3 games in hand. Hamburger SV (21, 13) are lurking if there is a slip up by the top two, while 4th place Olympiakos (19, 10) have the necessary games in hand to make up ground.

    IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY
    CHAMPIONS: Aston Villa

    PROMOTION (to A): Wolverhampton
PROMOTION PLAYOFFS: Udinese vs Newcastle (winner promoted), loser vs FC Schalke 04
PROMOTION (to B): FC Koln, Sunderland

    UPDATE 5
    As of 12.1.11

    SERIE A
After both Werder Bremen and Ajax pulled themselves out of the relegation mire last week, the key battle is now down to FC Schalke 04 (13 pts, 16 GP) and SC Braga (12, 18). If Schalke can win its remaining games, Ajax would be in danger of dropping to the pro/rel playoff spot. But with remaining games against PSV, Fulham, Aston Villa, and Sao Paulo, it will be an uphill climb for the Germans. Circle your calendars for Matchday 20, when SC Braga will host Schalke in a pivotal match.

    SERIE B
No dramatic changes in the Serie B table this week. Wolverhampton (32, 13) are still in the driver's seat, with Udinese (28, 14) close behind. The race for third is still down to 3 teams, though Corinthians (24, 12) and Rubin Kazan (24, 14) have lapped Newcastle (21, 13) for the time being. Stoke City (8, 13) picked up a vital 3 points in their relegation battle with Palermo (1, 13), but both teams will have extended stays in the 2nd tier due to managerial changes of other clubs.

    SERIE C
FC Koln (37, 16) and Sunderland (29, 12) are jockeying for the top spot in Serie C. It could be very important to finish 1st, as Olympiakos (19, 11) are still lurking with games in hand. If either of the two top teams slip, the Greek side will be ready and waiting to swoop in and clinch promotion.

    IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY
    CHAMPIONS: Spartak Moscow

    PROMOTION (to A): Wolverhampton
PROMOTION PLAYOFFS: Udinese vs Corinthians (winner promoted), loser vs FC Schalke 04
PROMOTION (to B): FC Koln, Sunderland

    UPDATE 6
    As of 12.7.11

    SERIE A
The relegation battle is now down to 3 teams. Ajax (20 pts, 20 GP) are safe in 9th for the time being. FC Schalke 04 (17, 19) occupy the pro/rel playoff spot, while 11th place SC Braga (12, 19) would be relegated. Ajax need a result at home against Spartak Moscow, a tough task. The big game in these last few days will be FC Schalke 04 - SC Braga. A Schalke win in that match would clinch relegation for Braga.

    Ajax: Spartak Moscow
FC Schalke 04: @ SC Braga, @ Sao Paulo
SC Braga: @ FC Schalke 04, Aston Villa

    SERIE B
Wolverhampton (32, 13) are assured a top-2 finish in Serie B, but have not yet clinched the title. Udinese (31 pts) are in the clubhouse at 2nd, while 3rd place Corinthians (30, 14) have two games to go. Any positive result from Corinthians' last two matches would eliminate Rubin Kazan (30 pts) from playoff contention. Newcastle (21, 15) are 5th and will be staying in Serie B.

    Wolves: Stoke, Palermo, @ Newcastle
    Corinthians: Stoke, @ Santos FC

    SERIE C
FC Koln (38 pts) have clinched promotion, but not the Serie C title. Only Sunderland (30, 13) can take that from the German club. Olympiakos (25, 13) are 3rd, and with the right results can finish no higher than 2nd place. Sunderland play Olympiakos in the final weeks of the season.

Sunderland: Parma, Hamburger SV, Olympiakos @ Palmeiras
Olympiakos: @ Galatasaray, @ Palmeiras, @ Sunderland, @ VfB Stuttgart

    IF THE SEASON ENDED TODAY
    CHAMPIONS: Spartak Moscow

    PROMOTION (to A): Wolverhampton
PROMOTION PLAYOFFS: Udinese vs Corinthians (winner promoted), loser vs FC Schalke 04
PROMOTION (to B): FC Koln, Sunderland
