    LATEST UPDATE:

Stanford's recruiting season comes to a close with the signing of 4 star HB Wes Hunter. The speed back will provide a little depth to a stocked backfield, including the #1 recruit in the country Shawn Scott. It's a recuriting class that's deep in defensive talent, with 9 incoming freshman playing in the defensive back 7. 3 offensive lineman will help that aforementioned backfield, while a pair of speedy WRs will keep defenses honest.

    14 seniors + 2 cushion + 4 below 60 = 20 scholarships

    1. :5stars: Shawn Scott - HB - 6'0, 217 lbs - Compton, CA
    2. :4stars: Justin Johnson - ATH - 6'1, 212 lbs - Castro Valley, CA

The big winner in week 1 was Virginia. Coach Gmoney landed 5 four star recruits to bolster the defending champs, a halfback, 3 defenders and an athlete who is likely to also play defense...... as if his defense needed any help :)

Army got an insta-commit on the #1 rated CB in the nation. He is only rated as a 75 OVR, but he is solid enough for a spot here at Army where we are graduating 3 or 4 CBs

I saw that guy. Was going to go late at him but you were way to far in the lead to even think about it. Nice pick up.

No idea. Don't remember recruiting this guy yet he committed. Perhaps he had pictures of one of my coaches or something.

This guy on the other hand. Great pickup for me.

    Minuteman Minute: Recruiting News

To begin the season, Coach Franklin cautioned several boosters to not buy into the early season hype behind what schools had the top classes. After showing his talents as a recruiter in his first season by signing a top 10 class with an unknown program and staff, expectations may have been for the same to repeat itself year after year. However, Franklin maintained that his subsequent classes would be more position fit targeted than pure talent grab, and as such would be more stringent exercises in patience and plan.
    That theory could not prove to be more true. Before last week, UMass had only 3 commitments;
******2 star athlete Jake Parsons of St. Albans, VT who is expected to be a silent challenger for playing time in the secondary, perhaps assuming CB Nate Carter's role as cover safety in UMass' 3 safety and dime sets in obvious passing situations. At 6'4, 237, Parsons also has the potential to play some linebacker, as well.
******3 star free safety Michael Rogers of Montclair, NJ, a speedy, athletic safety likely to redshirt as he refines his coverage skills.
******3 star wide receiver Brian Scott of Haverhill, MA. Scott is a solid addition to the stock of recievers being collected by Franklin. Scott has better than good speed, though not a burner, and reliable hands. And excellent route runner, Scott also has exceptional leaping ability and a knack for making difficult catches, assets that Franklin hopes will help with Randy Palmer's growth as a QB in the red zone.

And then last week, two of UMass' top recruits annouced their decisions last week in favor of UMass and a recruiting buzz is finally making its way around to interested parties in Amherst, culminating in a few more lesser acclaimed announcements.
******First, 4-Star wide receiver Sam Davis of Paramus, NJ made his commitment official early Monday morning on a local television station over Notre Dame and Virginia Tech. Davis is an extrenely explosive and extremely reliable receiver expected to ease the loss of Ernest Lee to graduation next year. He immediately will pair with the quickly improving Donte Gaston and Chris McCall to provide Randy Palmer with arguably the most dangerous trio off receivers this side of the Misssissippi.
******On Wednesday of the same week, 4-star CB Kyle Hughes of Perth Amboy, NJ. Speedier and more athletic than anyone currently in the UMass secondary, Hughes excels in press coverage, providing a dynamic aabsent from UMass' present corp of corners. With Hughes' addition, UMass looks to have an unprecedented level of depth at corner, especially if they are able to land their final target at corner, Raymond Ferwerda of South Gate, MD.
******The beneficial impact of signing both Davis and Hughes in the same week seems to have created good momentum for a few of UMass' remaining targets. JUCO TE Dane Griffin committed shortly after news of Hughes' commtiment began to hit the wire. Though only rated as a one-star, Griffin, a junior, fills a need created by the unexpected transfer of Marcus Rice to Navy before this season. Where Rice was more of a blocker, Griffin looks to team with McCall to provide Randy Palmer with a set of speedy, receiving tight ends that most defenses simply lack the personell to defend. His addition will certainly stretch the imaginiation of what Franklin and his staff can devise schematically. At 6'5, 244, Griffin, defintiely will provide matchup issues for opposing teams.
Finally, Franklin was able to close out the class with regards to wide receivers with the siging of Wallace Hill, yet another speedster. Hill is a 3-star recruit hailing from North Plainfield, NJ will have the opportunity to compete with Anthony Hopkins, Rodney Mills, Elgin Long, and Brian Scott. In terms of skill set, Hill is the most similar of anyone to the departing Marken Michel, though Hill is a big bigger and a bit of long strider who takes a bit more time to get up to top speed.
******With anticipated signing of Raymond Ferwerda, Franklin will have succesfully addressed his major concern for this recruiting class; stocking the cupboards with talent to develop at the receiver, safety, and cornerback positions. The only commitment signed with the expectation of being a major contributor early on.
Expect Franklin and his staff to look towards trying to close the deal on DE Ryan Hughes, a four-star defensive end from Pasaic, NJ with whom they've been involved in a hotly contest battle over with the Virginia Cavaliers and punter Joe Johnson of Philadelphia, PA.
UMass had been the considered the favorite for Hughes for most of the season before he made a surpise commitment to UVA, as they closed their case hard and fast. But Hughes almost immediately began to rethink his decision. Less than two weeks later, he made a soft commitment to the Minutemen.
Johnson, if signed, almost certainly will take the starting punter job from Jamie Dukes, who has struggled in his freshman season. Dukes performance has placed a great deal of stress on the Minutemen defense as a result of poor strarting defensive field position.
If they are able to close out the recruiting of those targets relatively quickly, expect Franklin to hit the reset button on his plans. The focus will shift from stocking the cupboards with talent to develop to identifying potential upgrades at HB, DT, and LG, and C, as well as better depth at MLB and QB and hoping that their new found stature as national title contender will help them pick off some other schools priority recruits that may not be feeling like priorites at the moment.

So what are the repercussions for oversigning, Wyrmreaver? I looked through the description and rules stuff and couldn't find anything regarding the punishment for going overboard. Probation? Loss of scholarships the following year? BOTH?

typically you are made to cut your best recruit(s) in the class you over signed. Why, are you considering a deliberate oversign or did you make a boo boo?
