Vikings Make Late Comeback; Win in OT on 55-yard Walsh FG
Minneapolis, MN - Week 10's Game of the Week featured an NFC-AFC showdown between the 7-1 Titans & the 6-2 Vikings. Both teams were riding winning streaks, were top 10 in both team offense and defense, and both had gotten there by riding their star running backs - Adrian Peterson and Jeremiah Banks (AP II).
The Vikings would start the game by putting together a methodical 7 minute drive, but TE Kyle Rudolph dropped a TD pass on third down and they would be forced to settle for a 21-yard FG. The Titans would answer with a drive of their own, but would cross the pylon on their trip - a 53-yard TD pass from Manning to Britt (made a nice move after catching a curl route, and the safety couldn't catch him). The Vikings would respond, however, and would take back the lead on a 25-yard TD pass from Romo to rookie Heimuli. But once again the Titans would put together a long drive, and WR Kendall Wright would catch Manning's second TD on the day from 9 yards out with 1:21 remaining in the half. Romo, trying to get the Vikings back into FG range in the 2 minute drill, would throw an errant pass that was intercepted by MLB Colin McCarthy. The Titans would convert the turnover to points (3), and lead at half 17-10.
It looked as though the game might be getting away from the Vikings in the second half, as they had yet to force the Titans to punt. Tennessee would drive the ball deep into Viking territory, but Brian Robison & Kevin Williams would sack Manning on consecutive plays to drive them out of FG range. However, QB Tony Romo would throw his second pick of the day on the Vikings next drive, and once again the Titans would capitalize with 3 points. Score at end of 3: 20-10 in favor of Tennessee.
Could the cardiac Vikings pull off yet another come-from-behind victory? It didn't look good halfway through the 4th quarter. That's when coach Brizz made his first real mistake of the game - deciding to try a FG from the Viking 42-yard line with just 5 minutes to play. Instead of pinning them deep, and forcing Romo to beat them, they missed the FG short and gave the Vikings excellent field position. Coach Simmons decided to rely on his workhorse, AP, to do the job and he finally got going. He would score on a 6-yard TD run with 3:05 to play. MN had closed the gap to 3 points, and had to get a stop. The Titans would pick up one first down, which looked to potentially seal it. But, the Vikings came up with a huge stop on 2nd & 3, and then on 3rd & 1 to force a punt. They got the ball back with 45 seconds to play; no timeouts. On the second play of the drive, Romo would hit TE Kyle Rudolph on a streak to bring them to the Tenn 38 yard line. K Blair Walsh had struggled from beyond 50 all season, so they wanted to get closer. But two failed pass attempts along the sidelines forced the Vikings to put the game in their kicker's hands, and he nailed it from 54 yards out with just 3 seconds left!
Overtime - The Titans put together a nice drive to start the OT period, but stalled just inside Viking territory and this time decided to pin the Vikings deep. Romo would start from the TN 20 yard line, and do what he does best - hand the ball off to AP. Peterson rammed it down the Titans throat in the OT period, but once again the drive stalled just inside the 40-yard line after Romo overthrew Rudolph on 3rd down. Blair Walsh lined up for the game-winning 55-yard FG attempt and NAILED IT!!
This was a very fun game between two evenly matched teams. great game, brizz98! The cardiac Vikings do it again...
