Raiders Escape Cleveland with 20-19 Win

The Raiders coming off their first loss of the season last week in a close matchup with the Steelers face an improved Browns team in Cleveland who stood at 4-3. Pryor coming off a probowl year has been up and down all season and failed to deliver in the final two drives to tie or win the game against the Steelers had another opportunity this game, but the question is, would he deliver?
The defenses for both teams came to play with the Raiders facing newly acquired Freeman as QB and the hard running Trent Richardson. Richardson opened up the game with a big run breaking a couple tackles to get the Browns close to Raider territory, but the Raiders defense held on to force a punt. After exchanging possessions, the Raiders got on board first with a FG by Janikowski to give the Raiders an early 3-0 1st quarter lead. The Browns then responded through the arm of Freeman and was able to drive down the field to put the Browns in position to tie the game at 3-3. The Browns defense held the Raiders run game in check for most of the game as DMAC had almost no room to run inside or outside in the 1st half. The Browns forced a stop and was able to take advantage with a 20-yard TD pass to Brooks to give the Browns a 10-3 lead. As the Raiders had done all season, they responded after picking off a pass from Freeman which put Raiders in Browns territory and DMAC finishing off the drive with a 5 yard to TIE the game at 10-10 going into half time.

In the 2nd half, the Browns defense continued to stonewall Mcfadden and continued to play the pass well too as Pryor had trouble finding guys open, throwing a couple picks and the receivers didn’t help with some drops. The Browns took advantage, but they couldn’t get in the endzone and settled for 2 FGS in the 3rd quarter to give them the 16-10 lead going into the fourth.

After another drive by the Raiders failed, the Browns drove the field again, but the Raiders held once more and forced a FG again instead of allowing a TD. With about 8 minutes left the Raiders were now down 19-10 and hadn’t had a good drive for almost two full quarters. The Browns had a great opportunity to close this out when they had the ball within the 10 yard dline of the Raiders, but Freeman tried a quick pass and Curry picked it off at the 1 yard dline and the Raiders took over, this would have been a back breaker for the Raiders, but the defense came through again. The Raiders finally were able to put together a drive, but was only able to settle for a FG to cut the lead down 19-13 with under four minutes to go in the game. The Browns took over killed some clock through the running of Richardson and was able to get the clock down to the 2 minute warning. On 3rd down however, a 1st down by the Browns essentially would seal a win, but a pass to the TE was dropped as 3 defenders were in the area which forced the Browns to punt with a little under 2 minutes to go.

Last week, Pryor had two opportunities to come in the clutch and failed and this week, he had another opportunity and the workhorse all season picked him up. At this point in the game, the Raiders had all their time outs left so they didn’t want to abandon the run. Mcfadden had about 120 tough yards at this point and on the first play of the drive, Mcfadden breaks a 55 yarder which looked like it was going to go in to the endzone, but the Browns caught up from behind and made the tackle at the 3 yard line. Dmac was trying to score and was ready to jump, but couldn’t’ get off the air, this could have been a blessing in disguise in the end. Dmac was then stuffed on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down and now the Raiders were down to their last down at the 3 yard line. They needed a TD to win and put the ball in Pryor’s hand after Dmac failed to get into the endzone three times. Pryor took the snap looking for Reece at first and it was covered and then saw Gates across the endzone and hit him for a 4 yard TD pass to give the Raiders a 20-19 lead with 30 seconds left. The Browns took over with one timeout left and Freeman tried to heave the ball downfield, but DVD got the pick to seal the game. The Raiders escape with a 20-19 win through the heroics of Mcfadden and Pryor.
