49ers Ride 28-Point First Half to Victory
defeat Titans 35-16 in season opener

The San Francisco offense came out firing to start the season, scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions to take a 14-0 first quarter lead over the visiting Titans. An interception return for a TD by Patrick Willis would extend the lead to 21, forcing Tennessee to all but abandon its running game. After a Tennessee field goal late in the half to get on the scoreboard, San Francisco would but the exclamation point on its first explosion on a 37 yard TD reception by WR Jameel Sommerfield near the end of the half.

A short field goal cut the lead to 28-6 to start the third quarter, but it was an interception of 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick that really got Tennessee the break they were looking for. The Titans proceeded to get into the end zone on a short TD pass to WR Kenny Britt to cut the lead to 28-13, bringing the contest back into a two-possession game. The San Francisco offense, for their part, sputtered in the second half, giving the Titans ample opportunities to continue cutting into the lead.

Although Tennessee would tack on another field goal to get even closer at 28-16, it was their inability to score touchdowns inside the San Francisco red zone that ultimately prevented them from overcoming their first half deficit. An interception return for TD in the last two minutes by FS Dashon Goldson closed the game for the Niners.

brizz98, Good game. The first half was huge for me, especially on offense. You just got into too big a hole and settling for field goals didn't help your comeback attempt. Good luck rest of the way.
