    THE OLD GUARD

While the TFS A table has changed in the last 4 seasons, a number of top-flight stalwarts remain. shiftee, he of back-to-back-to-back championships, will look to complete the unprecedented 4-peat as he returns to CSKA Moscow. Zikry struggled at the beginning of Season 4 at the helm of Aston Villa, but found his form late on. If he can continue to improve on that run, he will surely have a chance to claim the TFS A crown for himself. They will be challenged by, among others, juanchoCT14 who takes the reins of Sunderland this season, his 5th in Serie A.

The other members of the "Big-5" have been mercurial in recent seasons to say the least. Broncos218 and Werder Bremen finished 5th and 7th the past two seasons, but a late run at the end of Season 4 could see the proud club back to the top. Meanwhile, RedAL925 takes over at TSG Hoffenheim, looking to improve on his first top 3 finish ever in Serie A.

    THE REGULARS

Friz and Udinese had a breakout first season in the top flight. He now takes over at a talented Spartak Moscow side, where he will most certainly challenge for a championship. HokieNYC and Stade Rennes have the potential to finish high in the table, but will need to get early results to do so.

    THE NEW GUARD

The three newly-promoted sides to the TFS A are no pushovers. CxMacx10 and Wolverhampton clinched the Serie B crown last season, and having made the Coppa final, will be a force to be reckoned with in the top flight. rschwep and FC Koln is no joke either, and will be a tough out this season as well.

But the storyline of Season 5 is the return of Cimmy24 to the mountain top. Taking the reins at Borussia Monchengladbach, Cimmy will try to make a splash and make Serie A a permanent home.

    THE REST OF THE FIELD

mustang20241 at Corinthians and bigox1337 at Stoke City were able to clinch safety last season, but will need to improve in what is arguably the most talented Serie A field ever.

    5 QUESTIONS FOR SEASON 5:

    1. Will CSKA Moscow pick up where they left off?

shiftee won his first title with the Russian giants before moving on to local rivals Spartak. While CSKA are now TFS-eligible, they are without their former star Vagner Love (now at Flamengo). How will this affect the side's ability to score? And will shiftee complete the 4-peat at his new (old) club?

    2. Which newly-promoted side will make the biggest splash?

Cimmy24 returns to the top flight (we'll get to that later), but doesn't figure to challenge the top clubs (yet). It will come down to rschwep and CxMacx10, and while both teams could make a run, this pundit believes Wolverhampton have what it takes to compete for a top-3 place.

    3. Which teams will be fighting the relegation fight?

In what is the deepest and most talented field yet, the relegation battle will be just as intriguing as the championship race. The odds-on favorites for relegation are Stoke City and bigox1337 , but he impressed early in Season 4, so safety is not out of the question. mustang20241 will most likely join the English club at the bottom, and it's not out of the realm of possibility (though unlikely) that one of Broncos218 and/or RedAL925 could be sitting in the 10-spot towards the end of the season.

    4. Can Cimmy24 return to form in the top flight?

The founding father of the TFS returns to the top flight. After falling 1-point short in Season 3, he took Rubin Kazan to the promised land, sneaking in as the 3rd place team. Now with a new team in B. M'gladbach, Cimmy will try his luck at the Serie A table. Can he maintain a place, or will it be a quick stay?

    5. Will Zikry make another deep Coppa run?

Four seasons, 4 appearances in the Coppa final, 2 titles. These are the accomplishments of "Cup King" Zikry. No matter the format, no matter the opponent, he always finds a way to survive and advance. Will we see more of the same in Season 5?

    POWER RANKINGS

(for the next couple days, I will be counting down the Serie A Power Rankings. Completely arbitrary (for now) Keep it here for updates...this might be a weekly thing, if you want to get in on it, let me know)

    12. STOKE CITY bigox1337

    Last Season: 10th Serie A, 5-5-10 (20 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: Stoke City will need to lock down the defense if they have any hopes of clinching safety this season. After allowing 41 GA last season (tied 2nd most), this must be the priority for the new manager. If he can repeat the same start to the campaign as the season before, there might yet be hope for the English club.

Key Player: CB Ryan Shawcross - The anchor of the Stoke back line, he will be relied upon to mark the likes of Welliton, Doumbia, Pizarro, and some of the most feared attackers in the TFS.

Prediction: In a talented field, it looks bleak for Stoke City. A bottom 3 finish is almost a certainty, but as they say, that's why they play the games.

    11. CORINTHIANS mustang20241

    Last Season: 7th Serie A, 7-4-6 (25 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: Corinthians are another team hurt by the influx of talent to the top flight. While safety is definitely a possibility, there are many other teams that could finish above the Brazilian outfit. Positive results in the first half of the season will do wonders for the side's confidence.

Key Player: ST Liedson - The talismanic forward will need to spearhead the attack, especially on the counter, where Corinthians will likely try to score. After two quiet seasons, he is poised for a break out.

Prediction: Safety can be achieved, but this manager will need to score some upsets to do so. That and a completed match schedule could spell safety for the Brazilians.

I'm secretly kinda scared about this. I struggled and fell into the relegation race in season 3, and zikry did the same in season 4. With arguably the most talented Serie A ever, I fully expect someone to shock us and struggle for much of the season. Just hope it's not me!

    10. B. MONCHENGLADBACH Cimmy24

    Last Season: 3rd Serie B, 10-4-4 (34 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: Making his return to the top flight, manager Cimmy will need to adapt quickly to the tough competition. Defense was an issue last season, allowing a whopping 37 goals, but a +5 GD was promising. If he can lock down the defense (which is the key to quick success in the TFS), he should have no problem clinching safety.

Key Player: GK Marc-Andre ter Stegen - M'gladbach's keeper will need to stand on his head at times this season, and as a 79 OVR player, he has the potential to to just that. This team will perform as he does.

Prediction: This team could finish anywhere from 4th to 12th, but it remains to be seen how they will stack up against the TFS best. For now, they sit in the pro/rel playoff spot.

    9. STADE RENNES HokieNYC

    Last Season: 8th Serie A, 6-7-8 (25 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: This team is fast. Very fast. And with an anchor of a CDM at the heart of midfield (see below), this is a dangerous team. That being said, the new manager will need to figure out how to use this speed to maximum effect, which will take time...time that you don't have in the grueling TFS. Hokie has finished as high as 3rd and as low as 8th in his 3 seasons...where this team lands is anyone's guess.

Key Player: CDM Yann M'Vila - The beast of a midfielder will be counted on to not only stifle any attack, but also quickly start the counter. The success of the club rests on his large shoulders.

Prediction: Though they may be uncomfortable low in the standings for most of the season, this team should reach safety when it's all said and done.

    8. FC KOLN rschwep

    Last Season: 2nd Serie B, 11-4-3 (37 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: Two seasons ago, manager rschwep was tearing apart the Serie C in his TFS debut season. Last season, the promoted manager had no problems with the Serie B sides, finishing 2nd and earning yet another promotion. Now at the top flight, this manager will be looking to continue his rapid ascent by claiming a Serie A crown. That task, while ambitious, is not impossible for Koln, who have all the right tools to be successful in a hurry.

Key Player: CF Lukas Podolski - The talismanic striker will need to perform well against some of the best back lines in the league. It remains to be seen how transfer rumors will affect his play. He has the class, but will he have the mental fortitude?

Prediction: The new boys will be tested early, and success could set the tone for an unbelievable debut. However it remains to be seen how this team will stack up against the TFS elite. Safety is almost guaranteed, but the club lands no higher than 8th in the rankings.

    7. TSG HOFFENHEIM RedAL925

    Last Season: 3rd Serie A, 10-7-5 (37 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: The first "Big-5" member to check into the power rankings is the mercurial RedAL. Playing in his preferred 4-3-3 system, TSG will need to keep possession in order to compete, and if early preseason results are any indication of things to come, it may be a long season for the German club.

Key Player: CM Sejad Salihovic - Every team managed by RedAL has had the midfielder that can make all the passes. At TSG, that onus falls on the Bosnian playmaker, who will need to create opportunities for his teammates in order for this team to be successful.

Prediction: Season 4's improvement was a promising sign, but a talented field hurts their title chances. Safety is a virtual lock, and if the manager can use his veteran guile to grab points against the new boys, a top-3 finish is not out of the question.

    6. SUNDERLAND juanchoCT14
    [IMG]

    Last Season: 4th Serie A, 10-5-6 (35 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: Perpetually under the shadows of the more prestigious managers in the TFS, juancho has quietly finished in the top-4 three out of four seasons (finishing 6th in the inaugural campaign). This season brings a new challenge, taking the helm at Sunderland. The English brand of football is no strange thing for this manager, who achieved his highest-ever finish (2nd) with Everton. Will this club be as kind?

Key Player: RM Seb Larsson - The free-kick extraordinaire will patrol the right side of midfield for the Black Cats, but he will be at his most dangerous on dead ball situations. Defenders beware, a poor foul in a dangerous area will not go unpunished.

Prediction: Expect juancho to lurk mid-table for most of the season. If he can get on a good run, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Sunderland in the top-4 once again. But (for the 1,000th time) this is an uber-talented field.

    5. WERDER BREMEN Broncos218

    Last Season: 5th Serie A, 8-8-6 (32 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: Werder Bremen fell briefly into the relegation mire in Season 3, but managed to climb out of it late with a good run of form, finishing 7th. In Season 4, Bremen managed to overcome yet another slow start to finish 5th in the standings. If the pattern is to continue, manager Broncos should expect a 3rd place medal in his office by season's end. But a slow start this season (the most talented blah blah blah...) might cost him dearly.

Key Player: CB Naldo - In a team full of attacking verve, it is the hulking central defender who anchors the side. The big Brazilian essentially negates any attack down the middle, and can make the killer pass to spring the counter attack.

Prediction: The mercurial nature of this team in the last couple seasons makes ranking them a nightmare. But after a nice end to last season, the roller coaster that is Werder Bremen might be on the uptick. Expect a strong campaign out of the German side.

    4. WOLVERHAMPTON CxMacx10

    Last Season: 1st Serie B, 12-5-1 (41 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: After a dominating Serie B campaign, manager CxMac will look to pick up where he left off in the top flight. Almost all of the ingredients are in place for instant success, but the biggest question mark is whether or not the personnel at Wolves has what it takes to compete in the TFS.

Key Player: ST Kevin Doyle - Last season's Serie B MVP will lead the line at Wolves. It won't surprise anyone if he is at the top of the goal charts by season's end.

Prediction: The familiarity has been established between club and manager in previous season's, so this pundit believes Wolverhampton are poised for great things in their debut campaign.

    3. SPARTAK MOSCOW Friz

    Last Season: 2nd Serie A, 12-5-5 (41 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: Each season, manager Friz improves upon the last, making key adjustments and adapting to every style of play in order to get the result. From a 6th place finish in Serie B, he has climbed the ladder to the penultimate rung, needing only to make the last step toward greatness. Armed with one of the best clubs eligible for the TFS, will that be enough to push their manager into elite status?

Key Player: ST Welliton - Last season's leading scorer returns to lead the line under a new manager. Will the Brazilian be able to adapt to the new style of play? Or does it even matter? It's a safe bet that this man will challenge for another golden boot.

Prediction: The squad has proven it can win a championship, but can a new manager lead them there? Only time will tell, but expect big things from the Russian club this season.

    2. ASTON VILLA Zikry

    Last Season: 6th Serie A, 8-4-8 (28 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: It was a rough 4th season for manager Zikry and Aston Villa. Things fell apart early and if not for a keen tactical change and quick turnaround, he may have found himself in the relegation zone. Nevertheless, the Zikry of old is back, and with another Coppa final appearance under his belt, his sights will be set firmly on the Serie A crown.

Key Player: ST Darren Bent - The English talisman, Season 3's MVP, will need to continue to build upon his good form and challenge the opposition's defense.

Prediction: Last season's poor form was a mere bump in the road for the Villains. If they can split the season series with CSKA, they will have a legitimate shot at a TFS title.

    1. CSKA MOSCOW shiftee

    Last Season: 1st Serie A, 13-6-1 (45 Pts)

Season 5 Outlook: They're baaack... Manager shiftee retuns to Moscow to take the reins at CSKA, the club that brought him his first TFS championship. His brief sojourn with Spartak wasn't unsuccessful to say the least, but the familiarity with this club was too much to resist. While there shouldn't be a large adjustment period, the team did lose ST Vanger Love to Flamengo this winter, meaning the man up front (see below) must do it all on his own.

Key Player: ST Seydou Doumbia - Going it alone without former strike partner Vanger Love, Doumbia will be relied upon to score goals for the ever-dangerous CSKA attack. Doumbia is the odds on favorite for golden boot this season.

Prediction: There is very little standing in the way of shiftee and a 4th consecutive TFS A title. While this season's competition is fierce, no one has thus far been able to match this club's ambition and skill. It will take a behemoth effort to knock the king off this hill.
