    Sokratis Saves Bremen
You could certainly say things were "headed" Bremen's way in this match. With Group G kicking off today with defending Coppa Tradizione champions Werder Bremen and Santos FC, neither side could find the net early on. Werder Bremen were misfiring, while Santos' headers seemed to find Tim Wiese in the way every time. Santos' best opportunity for a goal came in the 30th minute, when Borges was found wide open in the box. However, his header went straight to Wiese, and the Bremen defense quickly cleared it away. With the score still 0-0, Bremen broke through in the 59th minute. After winning a corner kick, Marko Marin launched it up to find Sokratis in the box. Sokratis hit a perfect header into the top left corner of the net, which was all Bremen would need on this day. Werder were able to hold the 1-0 lead despite Santos' late attempts, and now sit atop Group G. While Santos comes away empty-handed when they expected at least a point, the close margin of defeat may come in handy if goal differential were to break a tie within the group. But for now, Bremen can move onto Matchweek 2 and begin focusing on their upcoming matches.

    COPPA GROUP A MATCH 1: 6.1.12
PSV EINDHOVEN OPEN GROUP IN STYLE

PSV Eindhoven opened the Group of Death with 3 points against fellow Serie A side Montpellier. The game was even throughout, with each team taking turns bossing possession. H. Bedimo Nsame could make no argument when a penalty was called in the 12' after he took down D. Mertens in the area. G. Wijnaldum stepped up and cooly placed the shot into the upper left corner for the opening goal. Montpellier then settled nicely into the match, and just before halftime, O. Giroud opened his Coppa account with a well-taken goal.

Montpellier began the second half by applying more pressure to the Eindhoven midfield. The teams traded shots until the 73', when G. Wijnaldum stripped a Montpellier midfielder trying to play the ball out of the back, and took a left-footed shot into the bottom corner for the go-ahead goal. The French side responded with a flurry of late chances, only to have them squashed by second-string GK A. Isaksson. An 87' save on J. Utaka sealed the points for the home side. The sides ended up with the same number of shots and an even share of possession. The 3 points for PSV will do wonders for their advancement hopes, having taken the full points from arguably the toughest of the 3 teams in Group A.

Dynamo Moscow opened up their Coppa play with a much needed victory against Stade Rennes. Dynamo, as has been there MO this season, came out blazing. Just four minutes in Kevin Kuranyi found the crossbar with a powerful header. Just eight minutes after that Andriy Voronin beat his defender and sent a powerful shot past the Rennes keeper far post. The White-Blues continued their powerful counter-attack with no results for the remainder of the half. In the second half a well placed corner by Aleksandr Samedov found Vladimir Granat who scored his first goal in all competition this year. Stade Rennes had opportunities, but were unable to muster much on net. Only three of their twelve shots tested the Russian keeper. Stade Rennes were awarded a corner in the 90th minute and keeper Benoit Costil came up into the box in a last ditch effort. The initial corner failed, but a deflection found Costil's right foot and he shot it past Anton Shunin to ruin the shutout.

Stuttgart - VfB Stuttgart rose to the occasion to earn a come-from-behind draw against Serie A stalwart Zikry and Ajax in a tit-for-tat, back-and-forth slugfest in the Swabian forest Monday evening. Ajax was heavily favored in this match, as their manager's offensive prowess is well regarded throughout the league, bust Stuttgart held to its defensive gameplan by blocking shot after shot. Both teams had several chances to leap into the lead, as the woodwork was rattled at each end of the pitch. The visiting Dutch side struck first on a perfect cross/header combination early in the second half, but the home side answered with a beautiful pass from William Kvist to Martin Harnik, who blasted the ball into the lower corner from just inside the area. Group C will be very competitive, with jb_banco scoring 1,000 goals per season and Geneseo98 's hot-and-cold streak that can see him go on some amazing runs. With this match ending in a draw, advancement is still wide open.

Using a new 3-4-2-1 formation after two winless encounters to start its Serie C campaign, Everton shocked Serie B side Olympiakos in the teams' openers in the Cup.

Olympiakos had the bulk of possession early on but it quickly turned into a tight affair. Tim Howard needed to make a sliding save in the early going to keep the home crowd in their seats.

The lone goal of the match was jarring considering how much of the game's action took place in the middle of the field. Diminutive Steven Pineaar found himself in open space down the right flank and sent a cross into the box. Tim Cahill boxed out the taller defensive back Vassilis Torosidis and headed a rocket past the keeper from the far 6-yard box. Everton sagged back in the closing quarter of the match to deny the Greeks a clean look for the equaliser.

Everton surges to the top of Group C. Great game, jb_Blanco.

Rubin got their Coppa debut off to a winning start edging out a battling Wolfsburg side. The wet conditions made it difficult for both sides to play entertaining football, but in the main the Russians looked the more dangerous outfit.
The winning goal was a scrappy one, a Martins shot parried into Valdez who had an easy finish 6 yards out. Luckily Rubin never rued several missed chances, with the Wolfsburg keeper in fine form denying simple chances to Martins, Valdes and Eduardo on 2 occassions.
The Germans seemed intent on an aerial attack and only a half chance near the end was their best opening, of which bad control let them down and the ball ran out of play. Time and time again the Germans tried the cross ball but this was meat and drink for Navas and Bocchetti who comfortably coped.
gg LasVegasFC best of luck rest of the way

COPPA Match 1 Recap: Cottagers start Group E with a 1-0 win against the Black Cats
Group E started with a bang with two Serie A clubs facing off for much more than bragging rights - as managers HokieNYC and Hokie79 go head to head once again. The home side were favored to win, and the Black Cats started brightly - dominating the first half and creating chances throughout. Fulham was on the backfoot - but their defense didn't break - partly due to some missed chances by Sunderland and it was a 0-0 draw at half. The second half was different, as Fulham changed things up a little, and Fulham was able to control possession and begin their attack (10 of their shots came after the break). This limited the chances for Sunderaland as well - and it looked as if they were heading for another draw. But a few minutes before time, Dempsey managed to maneuver the mid-field and spotted a brilliant run by Dembele who had nobody but the keeper to beat. He calmly slotted it into the far low corner for all 3 points. The Black Cats would rightly feel the loss was undeserved especially how the first half opened up - but there are more games to be played.
"It always feels good to win - but to win against your brother, away in a hostile environment, and based on our current form - it makes it even sweeter. It is a BIG 3 points, but the job is not done yet - we cannot overlook anyone in this group."

Los Angeles, California - Today's surprising results keeps the Galaxy on top of Group G and closer to their first appearance in the knockout stage of the competition. The Galaxy entered the match against reigning Coppa champion Werder Bremen as the decisive underdog but were able to stay toe-in-toe with the Germans throughout the match. Robbie Keane beautifully placed header from David Beckham gave LA a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute. Claudio Pizarro headed in the match-tying in the 36th minute and P. Bargfrede nearly gave Bremen the lead in the 60th. A shot from point-blank was turned away by goaltender Josh Saunders. However, Pizarro struck again in the 75th minute and the champs looked well on their way to claim the three points. However, three minutes from the end, Landon Donovan went down in the box and was controversially awarded a penalty. The successful penalty leveled the match at 2 and numerous chances by the Galaxy in stoppage time were turned away to preserve the draw for Bremen. Good game, Broncos218.
I tried to get some videos posted but they didn't work. Each video just zoomed in on my keeper when the play was at the other end of the field. Not sure why.

gg redwings8831, played great in that match. For replays, try sticking to the tele or broadcast views. When you change things around w/ different angles and focusing on different people, sometimes it can mess up the video

Round 2 of the Coppa featured two squads that were both desperately fighting for 3 points but ended in a 2-2 draw. The game featured outstanding performances from Aston Villa & Santos strikers, Darren Bent & Humberlito Borges, each scoring 2 goals a piece for their squad.
Both squads went scoreless into the half, each taking a few chances but also being cautious not to let in the 1st goal.
The game would stay at 0-0 until Santos' striker Borges put one past Shay Given in the 60', to put his club up 1-0. Aston Villa would respond 3 minutes later with a solid strike from Darren Bent to tie the game at 1-1.
Borges would have none of it as he netted his 2nd goal of the game, just 4 minutes later to put Santos up 2-1.
Bent responded in the 70', as he received a hard cross into the box, from Villa defender Hutton and volleyed it into the net to tie the game again at 2-2.
As Villa was celebrating, the Santos' Keeper was absolutely livid with the referee, pointing to the spot where Bent hit the volley. Replays showed he may have been offsides but the linesman never raised his flag. The next 20 minutes both teams were definitely on the attack but neither could find the back of the net and the whistle blew at 2-2.
A great game for the fans, which ultimately featured a 10 minute boxing match between Bent & Borges. Both landed hard punches but neither could get the knockout. Roger Great game!

Just 5 minutes later, Palermo would get a PK called against them for taking down Doumbia as he came into the box. This was a pretty weak call for the ref to make and the fans let the ref know it. Dzagoev stepped up to the spot and sent the keeper the opposite way to put his team up 2-0. CSKA would increase their lead when Doumbia took a shot which was saved, and the rebound was headed to Honda's feet who calmly placed a shot by the keeper. Honda would strike one in just 6 minutes after that on a shot from outside the box. Things went from bad to worse for the Palermo squad, as Doumbia was tripped up in the box a 2nd time and the ref was not shy to point to the spot right away. After reviewing the replay, this penalty was deserved as the defender's attempt was pretty much a knee-on-knee takedown. Dzagoev converted the PK and that would end the scoring in this game. GG OhDaesu, unfortunate that the ref influenced the game so early on.
