This matchup to open up Season 6 pits two managers who decided to leave their jobs from last year even after having successful seasons. CxMacx10 guided Wolves to the pinnacle of Serie A last season, but was unable to close it out with a championship; losing to Broncos twice in a row to end the year in second. Off he went to Flamengo where he will have a team that is a boost offensively with the likes of Ronaldinho and Vagner Love; but it will be interesting to see if the coach can bring with him the same defensive strengths exhibited at Wolves that saw the team ranked 2nd in Serie A last season in goals allowed. Early favorites have Flamengo as one of the favorites for the title this season, will this add pressure on the team or will they prove the pundits right?

rschwep had his own kind of successful season last year, finishing 4th in Serie A in his very first year in the division. In fact, both of these owners had their maiden season in Serie A last year, as both were promoted from Serie B in season 4. After deciding to part ways with FC Koln, he inherits a team in M'gladbach that have some solid players all across the pitch. Dante, who will be moving to Bayern in the fall, is the team's standout defender; but if this team is to make some noise this year it will be primarily due to the play of Igor de Camargo and Marco Reus upfront. These two have the capabilities to be one of the most lethal duos in all of Serie A and judging by what Podolski and Novakovic were able to do last season, expect these two to feature a lot on the score sheet for M'gladbach.

    Prediction:

It seems like CxMacx10 has had rschwep number over the past couple of seasons. After reading the reports and watching film it seems like Ronaldinho is ready to shine in Serie A as he looks to give it one last push before retiring. Based on the practices he looks like he is really enjoying his role now and with his incredible passing and shooting ability, I expect Flamengo to win this one as they stake claim to being serious challengers to the crown by defeating M'gladback.

    Flamengo 3 M'gladbach 1

With Serie A getting tougher every season, it becomes harder to predict who will end up being relegated come the end of the year. In week 2 the last "safe" team from Serie A last season (Stoke) face the 3rd placed team from Serie B last season (Fulham) in a game that might be viewed as an early "6 pointer". Stoke come into this game after surviving last season due, in large part, to Peter "Beanstalk" Crouch who was the stand out performer of the Stoke side last season. At times the team relied too much on Crouch however, and when he was shut out or simply misfiring, they seemed to be unable to move onto a Plan B. With a season under his belt at Stoke it will be interesting to see if bigox1337 is able to come up with an alternative plan than relying on Crouch's head when that simply isn't working during a game.

Fulham and hokie79 come into this season as a team that no one is quite sure of. After flirting with moving away from the Cottagers, their manager decided to stay at Craven Cottage after long talks with the owner Al Fayed. Fulham will rely on their defensive strength to gain them points, and hope that their opportunistic attack, led by the likes of Clint Dempsey and Moussa Dembele, can do the damage upfront. In Hangeland and Senderos Fulham have a CB pairing standing at 6'6 and 6'3 respectively, and both are known for their ability to handle crosses coming into the box.

    Prediction:

This will be an interesting game. Stoke's strength comes from whipping in crosses to Crouch while the CB duo at Fulham seem to excel at dealing with exactly those types of situations. Overall I think this will be a really close game and I expect it to be a score draw between these two, as both of them spurn opportunities to grab all 3 points late on.

    Stoke City 1 Fulham 1

Similar to our week 1 GOTW, this game features two sides from the top 4 last season as Spartak Moscow (3rd) face off against the treble winners Werder Bremen. Friz had a very successful campaign last season, and there really was no separating the top 4 in the league (1 point separated 1st from 4th). After taking over the Russian powerhouse last season, Friz's offense flourished as they were the 2nd most potent attack behind Aston Villa last season. Eminike and Welliton will look to continue where they left off as their combined 22 goals really led the push towards the title in Moscow.

Broncos218 and Werder Bremen knocked down all challengers and emerged as treble winners last season. Pizarro was named MVP and even led the charge in the Coppa and SuperCoppa Finals, scoring in both. Claudio ended the year as the top marksman in Serie A, M. Marin ended as the top assist man, and Wiese with the most clean sheets as Bremen truly did dominate. Now, with one last season before Pizarro is off to Munich and Marin to Chelsea, Broncos will look to duplicate last year's efforts.

    Prediction:

In last year's two games, the away team won both games with Bremen winning 4-0 in Moscow and Spartak returning the favor with a 3-1 win in Bremen. Both teams have the ability to score at any time, but how can I not go with the champion in a preseason preview. Bremen in a close one!

Werder Bremen 3 Spartak Moscow 2

Previous battles w/ Friz have always been good matches. Considering we'll be playing back-to-back, I'll be ok just earning 3 points somewhere

    Week 4:

    [IMG] [IMG]

Week 4's key game pits two of the longtime owners in Serie A as this rivalry has been geared up a notch with both owners now coaching teams in the same country. If you thought that PSV and Ajax hated each other before then for your own safety I would advise you to not be in Eindhoven for this game as this will surely be a heated battle between the two teams.

RedAL925 returns to Eindhoven after a mediocre season in Germany, and judging by his first week back it's as if he never left. 7 points out of 9 leave the team tied for 1st place, and if not for a rather dubious penalty call for CSKA Moscow, PSV might have been all alone at the top of the table. Dries Mertens, the Belgian winger who AL sees as "a poor man's Hazard" has been on fire to start the year, scoring 3 of the team's 5 league goals to date. On the other wing, Jeremain Lens leads Serie A with 3 assists, and the man born in Amsterdam will be looking to wreck havoc to his hometown team when they come to visit.

Defense, Defense, Defense. Ajax collected clean sheets in all 3 of their opening week games as they collected 5 points out of a possible 9, 2 points off the 4 teams at the top. While the defense has been stellar the offense has been less so as the team has only scored in one of their 3 games.

    Prediction:

PSV have scored in all 3 of their games to date while Ajax have yet to concede a goal. First goal (if any?) in this game wins then.

    PSV 1 - 0 Ajax

    Week 5:

    [IMG] [IMG]

Week 5 gives us a game that will be important for both teams for different reasons. After ripping through Serie C and B in consecutive seasons, Montpellier have struggled out of the gate as they are the only team yet to collect a point in the league. With their 2 other games against 2 of the teams that share the top spot for now (PSV, Spartak Moscow) this game might be the best chance for Montpellier and vipermansa to finally get something going this season. If they are to get a result here then Giroud MUST perform better than he did last week. The leading scorer in all of Serie last season with 29 goals (tied for most ever by a player in a single season) he has yet to score a goal this season. Look for Montpellier to try and get the French international going this week as they look for something positive this week.

For all the talk about Flamengo in the offseason, CxMacx10 is probably not content with the 4 points he collected in the first week, which ties him with Sunderland in 6th place. The team has 3 goals for and against, and have recorded a win/loss/draw to make them the most "middle of the road" team so far, which does not coincide with Mac's goal of constantly challenging for the title. The problem with this team so far is the inability of their strikers to get it going, especially Vagner Love. Ronaldinho has chipped in with 2 of the 3 goals for the team, but he needs help from his other partners in offense if this team is to push on towards title contention.

    Prediction:

Both teams will want to win this, but they will both NOT want to lose this game as well. I expect a cagey affair that might be settled by a late goal by either side, but a draw would not surprise me either.

    Montpellier 1 - 1 Flamengo

Similar to the week 4 GOTW, week 6 gives us a matchup between 2 of the 4 remaining owners from the original Serie A. However, where this matchup differs is in the fact that both shiftee and Broncos218 are the only owners to have ever won Serie A with Broncos holding 3 titles and shiftee owning 2. Both teams have started this season off in convincing fashion but have done so in different ways. CSKA collected 7 of the 9 points available by leading Serie A with 7 goals scored in the first 3 games. Seydou Doumbia (4) has as many or more goals than 9 Serie A teams, as the Ivorian nightmare continues to show that he is simply a step above many of the players in the league.
Werder Bremen collected 7 point as well, but did it without conceding a goal and scoring 4 of their own. Pizarro has 2 of those 4 goals and after last season's heroics, look for him to have many more by the end of the year. The Bremen defense has picked up where they left off last season, stifling opponents and leaving them with more questions than answers about their attacking capabilities by the time the ref blows his final whistle.
    Prediction:
CSKA are coming off a disappointing season last year and seem to be focused to start this season off. What better way to state their capabilities of winning it all by beating the treble winning team from last season? Sadly, I don't think the CSKA defense can hold onto the lead which they will take after 45 minutes as Bremen are able to leave the Russians in heartbreak hotel as they level the game up late in stoppage time.
    CSKA 1 - 1 Bremen

    Matchday 9:

    [IMG] [IMG]

A rivalry in every sense of the word, both teams will be looking for a statement win when they face off against each other in this week 9 showdown. shiftee leads his CSKA team into this game having lost 2 of their past 3 games in the league, and will be looking to get back into the title race with a big win against the undefeated Spartak team. In Doumbia and Honda CSKA possess the top 2 scorers in the league so far, and with their 2.33 goals per game average, will look to get some goals past a Spartak team that has only let in 2 goals in their first 7 games.

Spartak on the other hand, led by Friz look to be the odds on favorite for the title this year as we reach the mid-point of the season. Spartak have used great defense and an opportunistic offense to get them to the top, as they have yet to lose a game and have only dropped points in 1 of their first 7 games; a 0-0 draw with Bremen to open the season. Spartak will look to make sure that the CSKA offense doesn't get going early while hoping that either Emineke or Welliton (both with 4 goals this campaign) can take their chances up front.

    Prediction:

This will be a hell of a game. I think that both team's desire not to lose will make this a battle in the midfield. If either team can take their chances that might prove the difference, but in a tightly contested contest, I think this will end in a score draw.

    Spartak Moscow 1 - 1 CSKA Moscow

When these two teams meet each other in matchday 10, it will be an early 6 pointer for both teams who have not started their seasons the way they had envisioned. vipermansa seems to have turned his team around after losing his first 5 games as they have gained two wins in a row, and this team will be looking to move forward here with another win to distance themselves from the relegation - threatened teams. In Giroud, Utaka and Camara the French team has a fearsome attacking trio; even if Camara has yet to find his footing in the league with only 1 goal so far. The team always lives and dies with its offense as its so-so defense really isn't equipped to carry the team.
hokie79 has only managed 4 points in 8 games, and after dropping out of the Coppa with 6 points, losing on tiebreakers, the team must now put all their focus in trying to pull themselves out of relegation. With 2.63 goals against per game, the Fulham team are currently the worst defensive unit in Serie A, which is something that the team must look towards and try to find something that can work. The team's problems seem to be with the overall lack of speed at any spot of the defensive four, as they are continually burned by the faster forwards in this league.
    Prediction:
Montpellier have seemingly found their footing while Fulham are still struggling. The attackers of the French team will be too much to handle for the English team as they come away with all 3 points in this one.
    Montpellier 3 - 1 Fulham

Over the last match week Ajax and manager Zikry have surged to the top of the Serie A table. This match will see them face off against the club that they surpassed, Spartak Moscow. Unfortunately for Ajax, Spartak still have two games in hand. These two teams are absolutely the cream of the crop when it comes to defense in this league. Spartak is giving up a measly 0.29 goals per game and Ajax an even more impressive 0.22 goals per game. The only word to describe the defense of these two clubs is 'insane'. Both clubs are winners of four straight and look to continue to be dominant. In a tough Serie A where every point counts neither team will want to lay down.
On the offensive third Spartak is lead by Emmanuel Emenike (4 goals, 2 assists) and Welliton (4 goals, 3 assists). Ajax is lead by Christian Eriksen (4 goals, 2 assists) and Miralem Sulejmani (4 goals, 6 assists), but both of these clubs are about the defense.
    Prediction:
Both of these teams are mainstays at the top of the Serie A table and this season is no different. They are the two best defenses in the world and there shouldn't be a whole lot of scoring in this one. Spartak Moscow breaks through late, however, and takes three points.
    Spartak Moscow 1-0 Ajax

Just a clerical note, but I will be doing the Serie A GOTW Previews from here on out and Zikry will be doing the Serie B previews. We thought it would be fun to have an outside POV for each division.

Werder Bremen and manager Broncos218 find themselves in unfamiliar territory at this season's half way point. Right, smack in the middle of the relegation battle. After completing the first ever Serie Trifecta last season, the Germans have suffered a severe setback. Manager bigox1337 and his Stoke City club are just one spot ahead of Bremen and by only one point. Both of these teams will be trying to snag three points; desperate to save their spiraling seasons. Both teams will be looking to right the ship.
Bremen's usually stellar offense has sputtered and the defense has given up 15 goals through mid season. They gave up a total of 16 all last season. Pizarro leads the club with four goals after leading the league last season with 19.
Peter Crouch leads the way for Stoke with six goals.
    Prediction:
Should we expect the Bremen of old or will this season's disappointment continue? Can Stoke separate themselves further from the relegation zone or are they destined for Serie B? Week one's match-up saw Bremen take a tight 1-0 game, but look for more offense this time around. It's been a tough year for both clubs, but history favors the Germans.
    Werder Bremen 4-2 Stoke City

Two teams heading in opposite directions on the table sit 4th and 5th and will look to push towards the top of the table here in week 13. CSKA have lost three of their last four, falling out of the championship picture (for now), and Flamengo have not lost in their last five (four wins; one draw) after a rough start. Both teams, however, still find themselves in a position to move towards the top of the table. Catching Spartak Moscow will be difficult, but both teams will be looking to close ground. CSKA, as always, relies on a powerful offensive punch to out-muscle opponents and Flamengo has won with stellar defense.

Doumbia and Honda lead CSKA with nine goals a piece, just two shy of the lead league, and Honda also has added four assists. Ronaldinho leads the way for Flamengo with his six goals. Deivid's five assists for Flamengo are good for 3rd best in Serie A.
    Prediction:
CSKA have been on a bit of a slide, but they won't back down against any club. Flamengo's veteran savvy has boosted them towards the top after a difficult start and will look to topple CSKA. CSKA took a close one in the first match-up 2-1. Expect more of the same.
    CSKA Moscow 2-1 Flamengo

Serie A heavyweights will square off to start the match week in a battle of 2nd place PSV Eindhoven (29pts, 13gp) and 3rd place Ajax (24pts, 12gp). Ajax are coming off of two straight losses in matchdays 11 and 13 (MD 12 remains unplayed) and as a result PSV have been able to move passed them on the table. Despite the slide, Ajax is still only giving up a measely 0.50 goals per game. PSV is a very capable scoring club and therefore this should be an exciting match.
Ajax are lead offensively by the trio of Siem de Jong (5 g), Christian Eriksen (4g, 2a) and Miralem Sulejmani (4g, 7a). PSV, with five goal scorers of 3 or more, are more inclined to spread the ball around offensively with a few of the standouts being Tim Matavz (7g, 1a) and Georginio Wijnaldum (4g, 3a).
    Prediction:
Both of these clubs are fierce competitors and know that they can't take each other lightly. Expect a lot of defensive possession as neither team will want to make a mistake that results in a dangerous counter-attack. The two clubs fought to a 0-0 draw in matchday 4 and more of the same should be expected, but this time one club breaks through.
    Ajax 0-1 PSV

Ajax find themselves in a second Game of the Week in their match-up against Flamengo FC. The two teams sit tied at 3rd in Serie A at 24 points with Ajax holding a game in hand. Flamengo had a rough start to the season, but has incredibly surged towards the top of the table. Flamengo have won four of their last five in league play. As stated above, Ajax have lost their last two played and will be looking to turn things around this week. This match will be a battle of top 3 defenses in Serie A. Only Spartak Moscow (0.46 ga/g) have given up fewer goals per game than Ajax (0.50 ga/g) and Flamengo (0.85 ga/g). Both clubs are averaging just about 1.5 goals per game offensively.

Ronaldinho's 7 goals and Deivid's 5 assists are the leaders for Flamengo. Again, de Jong, Eriksen, and Sulejmani lead the way for Ajax's offense. The defenders are the show stealers for both of these clubs, though.
    Prediction:
In similar fashion to our Matchday 14 GOTW, don't expect the defenses to give up much ground in this one. Flamengo are surging and Ajax have stumbled ever so slightly, but look for a tight battle. Both teams will net one, but no more.
    Flamengo 1-1 Ajax

In a change of pace from our first two GOTW's we move to the bottom half of the table for this one. Sunderland sit in 7th (16pts, 12gp) and are in good position to pull away from the relegation zone for good. Stoke City are in 10th (9pts, 13gp) and a win could possibly pull them out of the final relegation spot and into temporary safety. Sunderland have had one of the better defenses in Serie A this year, allowing only 1.00 ga/g, but have been average at best at putting the ball in the net (1.25 g/g). Stoke on the other hand haven't played well defensively. Their 1.69 ga/g is fourth worst in Serie A. Stoke also struggle to score (0.85 g/g) which has led to an incredibly difficult season for manager bigox1337.

Nicklas Bendtner has 4 goals and 3 assists for Sunderland and Peter Crouch has 6 goals for Stoke City.

    Prediction:
Stoke City should be motivated this week as they attempt to dig themselves out of a relegation spot. Sunderland will be looking to put the relegation battle in their rear-view mirrors for good. The two teams drew 1-1 in their first match-up. Sunderland are not a prolific offense, but they will find the net in this one.

    Sunderland 2-1 Stoke City
